I get pretty hot about guns too. I don't have one, don't know how to shoot one, and don't want one. I don't want one in my house. I'm glad I have the choice. The day may come when I feel differently about owning weapons. Who knows. And it'll really worry me deeply to one day be told by my government that I'm not allowed to own one if I want it. I don't think that our violent crime has gone down as a result of people being allowed to carry guns though. It may be a factor, but there have been a lot of other factors too that have likely influenced our crime rates. And the fact that y'all lost the right to own guns in England and that y'all are being videoed everywhere you go (I was NOT aware of that before) makes me scared for what might happen here. There are other forms of financial aid than Stafford Loan. There are Federal Pell Grants for low-income students. There are scholarships for those who have applied themselves in preparation for college. There are more scholarships available to people with financial need than for others. There are other grants. There are other federally-backed unsubsidized student loans that will cover the complete cost of education, but the interest is higher than for subsidized student loans. There are work study programs. Any high school graduate who wants to go to college can go to college. Lindsey What??? Stafford load is capped at $6,625 for first year students. Penn State satellite campus first year tuition is $9,621 for PA residents. Not to mention: ESTIMATED room and meal expenses: $6,200 ESTIMATED expenses for books and supplies: $1,100 ESTIMATED expenses for travel and personal supplies: $1,200-2,400 To make up the difference between the costs and what you get from the loan, working at minimum wage you would have to work 2,232 hours a year. hell...I can't afford mine either, though I could at the time. Can't send 'em back though. Mine's sleeping beside me right now....got scared of the thunderstorm. There's a GREAT little dz over at Siloam Springs--Skydive Skyranch. Check it out. They're at the Cecil Smith airfield every weekend except during the convention... The folks there are awesome and you'll surely have a good time. It's usually a Cessna drop zone, but periodically they have larger aircraft. Kids in college and other young adults often make it okay on minimum wage jobs because they share living expenses with others and don't tend to have as many debts. If one does not do the necessary things to move on from that job, that person cannot expect his/her situation to improve. I believe people can make it okay on minimum wage in the above context for example, but they can't expect to have their own place, support a family, drive a nice car, live in a nice section of town, and save for retirement. Paying for education....today I'm about $120,000 in debt for mine with about $30,000 more to go. Student loans....subsidized by the federal government...so maybe I'm taking advantage of one of those safety nets right now. BUT it's not difficult to borrow money for education unless you have not been a responsible borrower in the past. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I do think that there should be some safety nets, but we've gone way overboard in taking care of everyone's needs and wants. People don't have to be responsible for themselves, so more and more people are learning NOT to be. We have children now who are the 5th (and maybe even 6th) generation living on welfare. From whom are they going to learn to work hard, get an education, and make something for themselves. People are being crippled in a sense by our system IMHO. When things don't go right, we tap into somebody else's pocketbook. If there's not a readily available pocketbook, we sue someone else for our misfortune. No one is responsible for me besides me. If I fail then I'm screwed. If one doesn't think he or she can prepare for retirement on minimum wage, then that person should get more training or education and do something that will provide a better living. honest but not an open book. Some things are just MINE, and I don't always feel the need to tell everything I think or of every experience I've had. I like having some secrets, so I guess I'm not brutally honest. But if asked a direct question, I won't lie under oath. Otherwise it depends on the situation and how valuable that relationship is to me. I also don't want to hear that I look stupid when I dance....tact is appreciated sometimes, and I try to be tactful myself when I feel I MUST open my mouth. Sure parents should be allowed to have their children's ears pierced. It's neither disfiguring (though maybe not attractive) nor particularly painful. Should old ladies be allowed to pinch little kids' cheeks? That's equally painful and probably more humiliating for the child.... There are lots of things that happen in the world that I don't agree with, but taking responsibility away from individuals makes people lazy and irresponsible IMHO. Peace~ Lindsey
