Maaaaan! After not jumping for 2 years, last weekend a friend and I went to Moss Point for me to get back into the air. We had a BLAST down there. A great spot. .....which reminds me of all the many, many twin studies done on one problem after another, and all the many behavioral problems that seem to have genetic predispositions... Noone has ever found any specific brain chemistry to pin addiction on. We know the actions of individual drugs, but there's simply no target for "addiction" in the broader sense. Maybe it's there somewhere, but we don't know what it is. That's my question about the pharmacology of some vaccine like this. I don't think it's realistic. Even if it's targeting individual receptors....those receptors are there for other reasons than for the pleasure that drugs bring. I wouldn't want mine blocked. Also....various drugs are active a various receptor sites.....again, too broad to target a single vaccine to. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I think that the draw is that it sounds so good to so many people who have been affected by addiction. But I doubt that in reality the answer is so easy. It rarely is. As far as negative effects....one would be hard-pressed to show that there are none. In fact...I think that the early attachment is probably more important in many ways than the things parents do when children are older. There are also studies that dispute that (you can find a study to support just about anything). But when kids don't have that basic ability to form attachments then a basic, very vital, building block/foundation is lost. Attachment is a lot harder to learn as you grow older. Yeah....I also worked for years with children as a social worker. I agree that parents with difficulties tend to have kids with difficulties. Without decent parenting, it's hard for kids to make it. Kids need the safety, security, and guidance that parents *should* provide. However, often parents do everything they can, and their kids have problems. It happens a lot more often than one would like to think. Those parents get fingers pointed at them from every direction, from people who can only see that parents are to blame when their children screw up. That's some heavy pressure we put on people who REALLY work hard to do right by their families. It's just not helpful imho. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Nature vs. Nurture. It's an old argument, isn't it. If ya' want to pin it all on nurture, then I'd just have to say that there's a heck of a lot more to this kind of a model than parenting. Children's social lives aren't quite that narrow, imho, and other influences while maybe not as strong can influence children dramatically. Often very good parents can just not have the ability to solve all of their children's problems. I tend to think there's a biological component in there, as well. Sounds like pie in the sky to me. I'd love to see the pharmacology of that...and how in the heck, with such different mechanisms of action of different drugs, one vaccine could solve such a broad, non-specific, problem of "drug addiction." Damn Dagny..... I totally and completely understand your frustration. I did not jump at all in my 2nd and 3rd years of school. It sucks. I also let myself get sucked in a very rotten direction in other ways. It's weird reading your post and thinking that that's EXACTLY how I felt 2 years ago. Hang in there. Medical school isn't easy, and it shouldn't be. There are lots of days of jumping ahead, though..... Girl...for now just learn all you can. What jumps did you do in the beginning?

My suggestion would be a LOT of 2-way to learn basic flying skills. (but what do I know...lol) When I started jumping I couldn't wait to do MORE. Now that I'm starting jumping again after a couple years away, I think 2-way is the way to go until the skills are improved. Start where ya' are, and work your way into more difficult stuff. That sucks. Don't beat yourself up over it, though. Just try to learn something so that when you're healed you'll avoid the same mistake. It's not as much about timing as it is about finesse....lol.
