I recall one moment in particular, on a board at the end of a long day, and I was tired. I got into a nasty spin and thought for a minute that I was just too tired to deal with it. But there was no choice but to deal with it. I wished then that I was on the ground, but I never thought that that jump would kill me. First, it's not as much an imaginary line in age as much as a line in development. legally, that has been delineated in age ranges. What would you say if the child were 6? Many, if not most, children who are sexually abused come to find some enjoyment in the situation....because they don't have the emotional or cognitive capacity yet to understand why a person who is supposed to care for them has sex with them. The adult often tells the child he/she loves the child, and that sex is an expression of love. It can be DEVASTATING for children when an abuser is eventually caught and sent to prison (hopefully). It may take years for children to resolve in their own minds what has happened in their lives and to learn to develop relationships that are "normal." Not always....but many, many times it works out like that. If you think it's okay for a teacher to have a sexual relationship with a 13 year old who consents, then why not a 6 y/o who consents...? Is there an imaginary line in age that you would draw between those years???? Obviously there are lots of things parents make children do against their will. To equate those things (even though many are harmful) to having sex with children is ludicrous. I made my child eat peas....mostly because he was being a brat about it. I know that was wrong, but if I had expressed my love for him through sexual acts, that would be much, much more wrong. Most things lie on a continuum of some sort. Sexual abuse, at least in our society, is moving to an extreme that culturally we don't tolerate. At all ages, there are certain things that children are capable of making decisions about, and others that they are NOT capable of making decisions about. Kallend....now that you've made this statement several times, I wonder how many people are taking it to heart. That is a really frightening prospect to me....of NOT having insurance coverage available. I suppose you can find an individual policy to supplement your group policy or something, but dad gum! What else does your policy not cover? Accidents that happen while snowboarding? riding motorcycles? flying in small aircraft? There was a short period of time toward the end of graduate school when I had no insurance, and of course I broke my leg running down a mountain. This is not an issue I've had to deal with a WHOLE lot, because our planes hold 4-5 jumpers here. HOWEVER....on one occasion while visiting a larger dz, jumpers in the plane started that "trash" as I think of it..... While it's rude to hold up the groups behind you, you must be responsible for your own safety. If you don't believe that you can jump safely due to separation from a group ahead of you, then in my opinion, you shouldn't go until there is adequate separation. I think it's crazy to expect anything else. If I'm in one of the the last groups out, then the same rule would apply. If I believe that the spot has become so bad as to be hazardous to me, then I'll ask the pilot to go around. If he/she gets pissy, then that's another problem in itself. I don't think a pilot's attitude is something I'd allow to compromise my safety on a skydive. If the dzo is behind that attitude, then I don't believe that's a dz I'd like to frequent. Your list has my FAVORITE (flying) and LEAST favorite (being attacked) recurrent dreams. What was cool was that when I started skydiving my flying dreams changed. When I was a kid I use to run and jump and bike-peddle my legs to fly....lol. THEN one day I started learning how to actually FLY. I'm sure somebody's gonna flame me for not doing an adequate search, but anyway.... It is hard for me to understand people skydiving without any health insurance that will cover injuries sustained while skydiving. This recent incident at Monroe both boggles my mind and tears at my heart. I don't understand why a mom of young children was skydiving at all without a plan for how to care for her family if she was badly hurt. Meanwhile, if I lost my coverage (which seems could happen pretty easily nowadays) I wonder if I would stop jumping again, and I also have a young child who would be left with a mess if I were not able to tend to household business. I'm just tossing this out there because I'd love to hear people's opinions. I'm not unsympathetic, at all, to Joan and her family. I could see myself in her situation. Not about appeasing people. It's about following through with what the courts decided. Hmmm.....it seems to me that since *most* adults (I hope) are capable of more abstract thought, that we could get past these incredibly concrete notions as solutions to social problems....It's EASY to say we have to do what the court ordered. It's a lot harder to think about whether what we're doing is productive. From my own studies of these types of issues (though it's been some time), I don't think this is productive. I can't imagine what sense it would make to execute this person in any way, except to appease some angry people who think that some kind of justice is done by following throught with an execution. To me that seems to be a knee-jerk response by people who are bound and determined to stand behind their death penalty political position. Maybe I'm reading that wrong. However....so he's mildly mentally retarded. That doesn't seem to have a lot of bearing in my mind. People with mild MR aren't usually so impaired that they don't understand the differnce between right and wrong. What bothers me more is that he has some level of dementia. I think that is a much bigger issue. The article doesn't really comment on the severity of this problem, but HELL.... I mean, any execution isn't going to deter that person from committing a crime again, obviously....but JEEZ!!!! I just have a really hard time getting past the idea of executing a person with dementia. Unfortunately that's not always the mentality....or even *frequently* in some necks of the woods. There are many, many people who would love to use it and justify their actions later. Better yet, they would love to use it against certain classes of people more than others....which opens up another can. That being said, I still would argue for people's rights to keep their guns (without registration). It just makes me think about what I use to hear quite a lot...."if you're not careful you'll should all over yourself...." Basically, what seems logical in these situations isn't always logical. It is a good POINT, but nonetheless, people spend years in prison when that point is lost on a jury that tends to blame women for their abusive situations.... Don't think for a second that it doesn't happen right here in the USA. I did some work in the women's prison here in Arkansas, and it's amazing how many are there for "crimes" commited secondary to defending themselves against an abusive partner. One woman I knew had her skull fractured by her husband's baseball bat, but since her knife was "more deadly" she went to prison. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
