We cannot hold others to a different standard than we hold ourselves to. I'm not particularly interested in the well-being of these particular people, but I am interested in our credibility which is obviously suffering. She's obviously not making a scientific statement, so it doesn't bother me based on that. She is just as qualified as any of us to speak her mind on social issues. What strikes me, though, is that distrust must run pretty deep for such an accomplished person to make such a seemingly ignorant statement. I think that it is obviously a physician's responsibility to be contientious, and I think that sometimes that's where the problem lies. If I mistake, it is my fault and nobody else's....not "the system's," not the late or long hours, or anything else. It is a physician's responsibility to think and rethink, check and recheck, what he/she is doing. However, calling any physician who makes a mistake a "bad doctor" is ridiculous. You will not find a single good doctor if that's your standard. It's easy to place blame. It would really be nice if more patients would take some responsibility for their own health. If a person smokes like a chimney and gets lung cancer, is it the physician's fault if he/she didn't find it as soon as the patient would have liked? Is that person's death the fault of the physician??? Maybe when the patient came in for the 5th time that year with another bout of bronchitis the physician did NOT order another chest x-ray that would have detected a mass. Whose fault is that? Those things get blamed on doctors all the time. How about the diabetic who won't exercize and lose wieght. When there is some complication that *maybe* the physician could have prevented with a little better foresight.....is that the physician's fault? These are the kinds of things that doctors are blamed for. People who will pay $40 for a manicure or to get their hair done often can't come up with a $20 co-pay for the physician who manages their hypertension and diabetes. I believe, perhaps naively, that most physicians do have their patients' best interest in mind. I think that sometimes, in the rush, some physicians may not be as detail oriented as they should be. All people will make mistakes, despite every effort not to. To try to pin every unfortunate outcome on a physician, though, is really, really reaching. Devil's advocate here..... So say that a couple is married and he treats her like utter shit for YEARS. The situation is such that with a child and need to pay bills to keep a roof over their heads, it's really friggin' difficult to find a time that's convenient to leave. He's such an asshole that she thinks, "why the hell do I owe him the time of day, much less my faithfulness?" He berates her, he hits her, he shuns her. Finally there's a way out and she starts making a plan. Meanwhile, after waaaay too many years of not gettin' any, she meets someone. She's not divorced yet, but working on it finally. Who the hell is anybody to call her any names at all. Who is anyone to second guess where she's been and what she's been through. I say if you don't want to sleep with a married person, then by all means don't. But to be so presumptuous as to think you understand others' situations is pretty damned pompous, imho. The thing about the influenza virus is that USUALLY the virus mutates with minor antigenic changes as it repicates through the year.... You won't be immune to it without the vaccine, but because the virus is somewhat similar to what you've probably been exposed to before you'll only get very ill, but you probably won't die unless you're very old, very young, or immunocompromised. Periodically the Influenza A virus mutates dramatically (antigenic shift), and we get a very serious outbreak. This occurs when, for example, a person is infected with a human strain and an avian or other animal strain. The progeny virus is assembled with some chromosomes of both strains. That new strain leads to the pandemics. Our immune systems have a much more difficult time with these infections. ....as is so typical. Victims of crime (especially victims of rape) are far too often blamed. I haven't followed this case at all, but I feel for any person who has tried to endure that kind of scrutiny while seeking some sort of justice.
