  1. Makes a lot more sense than a constitutional amendment that defines who can marry whom.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  2. OOH! And then you get the nifty wireless card, and you can use your laptop out on the deck! Cool.... I'm very, very computer ignorant, but I do love my DSL and wireless card. Funny....now that I'm down here in the sticks of south Arkansas I can get DSL. Couldn't get it when I lived in N. Little Rock. Peas! linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 3. This isn't a debate that I want to jump too deeply into, but pathologists make life and death decisions every day. Who does the specimen report come from? The pathologist.... What they do requires far greater knowledge than what your local tandem master needs to know. Far fewer people are capable of doing their jobs. To make that comparison is really, really reaching.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  4. You said what I was thinking. I've always been pretty quick to forgive, but when someone hurts (for instance) my child I'm much, much slower to forgive. Even if the inability to forgive only hurts me, I'm not a big enough person to forgive some things.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 5. Barbara Kingsolver novels. I've read Prodigal Summer and Poisonwood Bible, and both are great books. I'm gonna read Animal Dreams next. I once had read most of Anne Rice's novels, but got kind of tired of them. I just ordered Blackwood Farm the other day though....see if there's anything new there. Just finished a Dean Koontz novel, Odd Thomas. I don't recommend that one unless you're up for a mindless read.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 7. I don't understand though.....someone asked what I-X could stand for and he replied that I-V could be the piggy toes on one foot and that you could assume that VI-X were the piggy toes on the other foot. Maybe I'm dense, but I just don't understand where the attack was. Hell it really doesn't matter one way or another, but I am a little perplexed.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

  9. Unfortunately kids from families in higher income brackets may have difficulty getting aid for college....unless they work for a few years first. But there's nothing wrong with waiting a few years for college either. Just be sure to earn a relatively profitable degree so that you can pay those loans back in a few years.... -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 10. Can you be a little more specific? Do you have personal knowledge, or are you just repeating something that you hear people say a lot? Do you know how much cash people receive through welfare programs? Because I do, and no one is living off of it. In 1996, welfare reform legislation (The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act) ended federal entitlement to cash assistance (under the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program). The 1996 law created a new welfare program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which: limits the provision of cash assistance to families with a dependent child or pregnant woman; imposes a 60 month lifetime limit on the receipt of benefits; requires that a family's benefit be reduced if parents do not cooperate with child support officials; denies assistance to individuals convicted of a drug felony ; denies assistance (for a period of 10 years) to any person convicted of fraud in the receipt of benefits in two or more states; denies assistance to teen parents not living in an adult-supervised setting; and denies assistance to non-citizens who arrived in the United States after 1996. Maybe I'm a little jaded from all my years as a social worker. Yes....I do have a little first-hand knowledge. I have seen waaaay too many people scheme on ways to get something for nothing....I often have thought that people can work harded to manipulate the system than they would've worked if they'd just have gotten a job. Blows me away. There are all kinds of "limitations" in place, and just as many ways for people to get around it. There was a time when I was much more idealistic about people and their needs. After working in the middle of that system for a number of years, my views changed. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  11. Agree completely. But how do you do the first part? What if they won't? How about providing child care, health insurance for children, food stamps, but no cash. Give people the support services that they need for their kids, but not money. People can choose to work or not, I suppose, but currently we make it way too easy for people to live off the system. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 13. Dude! It's just my opinion. I usually DO give money when people need it, and I'll probably do so this time. I'm not all that cold really. I've made irresponsible choices once or twice in my life too....imagine that. I am grateful to people who have helped me out at tough times that were brought on by nothing more than my own bad decisions. Just because I believe a person has made irresponsible choices does not mean that I believe nobody should help him out.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 15. I even respect someone's decision not to insure themselves and their belongings. BUT what I think is irresponsible is for people without insurance to look to others to cover their losses when they aren't lucky. But what I find irresponsible ceases to be relevant when someone has been devastated by their rotten luck. Peace~ linz Peas! linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 17. I own a home, but since my husband and I separated I'm also renting. I HATE renting!!!! I will definately buy another house when the divorce is done and when all the property issues are settled. Peace~ linz Only 16 weeks left
  18. As a rule I don't give money to people on the streets....except when my child is with me. I always give him a dollar to give to them. I think it's more important at age 7 to learn to give and to be generous than it is to understand that people will rip you off if you give 'em a buck. linz
  19. Hey...so where'd you get that avatar?
  20. No apology necessary. My point is not whether or not it is killing. The embryos are going to be "killed" regardless. Why shouldn't we use them for research, with the donors' permissions if necessary? I'm not apologizing. I'm stating what I believe to be fact. For me, either method would be killing. Period. ltdiver The embryonic stem cell debate often focuses on abortion. Another supply of stem cells comes from in vitro fertilization. The embryos that are not chosen for implantation are often discarded but can be used as a stem cell supply. I wonder if people tend to draw the same moral lines around the use of these embryos. I'm fairly certain that there are a lot of anti-abortion folks who would not advocate so strongly against in vitro fertilization lindsey -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 22. Nobody's ever going to fault you for wearing a suit, but they might knock a few points off for dressing down.... I think it shows respect to wear a suit. linz
  23. I have an interview Tuesday, and I'm wearing a brown suit. I think it's okay not to look exactly like everyone else they're interviewing.... I didn't even wear a suit to my medical school interview....wore grey trousers, a white shirt and a red jacket. Did I stand out?! Yeah....got an early acceptance too....lol. So my way is to look nice and to interview well.... linz
