I haven't had this same experience, but I do understand feeling overwhelmed and fearful that I will fail in other areas of my life. For me, I have to get rid of the thoughts of "I'm scared," "I'm gonna screw up," "I can't do this," and replace them with thoughts of "Maybe I'm a little scared, but I CAN do this," and more positive thoughts like that. I know 2 people who survived like that. One of them was literally THROWN from the plane!!!!! they both still jump. When the track and field events come on, you'll probably hear some mention of Rob Howard, a classmate and friend of mine who has been a triple jumper in the last two summer olympics. He didn't make it this time. I don't know what happened to him Saturday, but Sat morning he stabbed his wife to death and later jumped from a 10th floor dormitory window. Anyway....she was the chief neurosurgery resident at UAMS, and he was a budding neurosurgeon. Blue skies to both of them. I would support a person's decision for suicide if he/she were living with a terminal illness, with no hope of recovery, and no hope of relief of suffering if it were very severe. What I have difficulty with, from a budding physician's perspective, is that assisted suicide puts a doctor in the role of "assistor" only by default--because we have access to the medications. To me, the "right to die" is a philosophical or spiritual issue, not a medical one. Physiologically, the body will go through the processes that it will as our medical interventions fail. Many, many, many people suffer, and while it is our role to assist in relief of suffering, going the extra step and assisting a person with suicide is not something I would feel comfortable with in my own practice. Not because I think a person should not be allowed to die with dignity, but because it's not a role I think belongs to the physician, or one that I would want to take on. lindsey -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. The other thing that always comes to mind (though I try to be kind enough to not speak it out loud) who are these people hollerin' at you. Are they looking out the door????? I have no idea who the MF's are, and there's no WAY in any hell that I'm gonna listen to them before I listen to my own brain (despite its flaws). There are a lot of jumpers who are real control freaks and really up tight. one of the more iuseful things I've learned in medical school is that some things just fu@&ing hurt. It'll heal, but it'll probably be painful for a while. Jesus F'n xst.... I will NEVER forget that jump when (even though there were only 4 of us) my good friend Jack and I opened at what seemed to be adquate distance until my Sabre 150 opened 90 degrees or so to the right and his 170 opened about the same to the left. My feet caught the top of his canopy as we brushed by each other. Neither of us had more than a hundred jumps at the time, but neither of us had control of our canopies at the time either.....
