Are you trying to demonstrate the cultural bias of a Western organization? Or are you trying to use this as the basis for demonstrating some basic flaw in Arab people? Did I tell you that? If I didn't go ahead and explain how you know what I want without me communicating my wants to you. To me theres only one way and thats mind reading. Why do black people have a steeper hill to climb today? How is their struggle any different from the daily struggles I have to endure? How is their opportunity any more limited than mine? This is what I have a problem with, people thinking that life is harder for them when compared to the different colored guy standing next to them. That is bullshit. One reason might be that most employers are white people, many of whom hold attitudes like yours. Hard to get ahead when your prospective employer holds a not-so-favorable view of you because of your skin color. I definately have it easier in my profession than many others around here do because of who I am.... because of my family history in this part of the state and because of my family's contribution to this profession over generations. My hill is not so steep. I try to do well and not embarass myself and my family, but I'll be taken care of because of who I am. There are many more white people in my situation than there are blacks. Then when you narrow the slice of the pie that you're examining to the segment of society who really controls the wealth.....it's REALLY hard for any ethnic minority to break into that circle.... Again, I think that if you truly WANT to understand why people feel like they do, then you can search and pretty easily find the answer through your own thought processes....as long as you're really trying to answer your question and not just looking for a reason to rant. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I agree. My point is that the black community does not lift themselves up by their bootstraps. What is "the black community?" There is not a single black community the best I can tell. If you think that the social progress that many black people have made over the past few decades is not a result of some strength from within, then I think you are just bound and determined to see the worst in people. There are many, many people who make it in this world because of the effort they put into life. There are others who don't. I think that, overall, minority people and especially blacks, have a steeper hill to climb than those of us who come from a more privileged lineage. The black community creates a lot of the problems for themselves. Why is there BET? Why is there JET magazine? Why does the NAACP exist? Why does the WB only play programs with Black actors? They create a segregated environment for themselves. What happened years ago cannot be changed and it is about time that it is left in the past. As long as the black community is living in the past and allowing jackasses like sharpton and jackson to represent them then they will not be able to move forward. Black people make skin color an issue, not white people. All I'm saying is that I understand why many black people feel that there is a conspiracy against them. I get the sense, from the tone of your posts, that you're interested in making some point, but not in discussing a very sensitive issue. I am not a fan of the NAACP or of Affirmative Action, and I couldn't care less whether BET is black. I DO believe that people have to pretty much lift themselves up by their bootstraps. The same is true here, imho. That belief, though, is pragmatic. So you are saying that because black people were not allowed to drink from the same water fountains or use the same bathrooms as white people X number of years ago that you can understand why some black people think the government has conspired to commit mass genocide against the black man??? A little extreme wouldnt you say? Surely you're aware of the history that preceded black people not being able to drink from the same water fountains as whites.... I'm saying that the problem that began many, many years ago is still with us. And given the history, then no I don't think it's extreme. Given that very many black Americans can remember not being allowed to use the same restrooms as whites....or eat in the same dining rooms as whites....or drink from the same water fountains as whites.....or attend the same public schools as whites, then I'm not surprised that MANY black people believe that whites are conspiring against them. I graduated from high school 20 years ago. I remember during my teenage years stealing the neon "Colored" sign from above the bathroom door of a local gas station. Granted, the rule wasn't still in effect, but the sign was still there.... The answer to your question is pretty clear to me, though I think you're way off base in insinuating that all black people think everything is a conspiracy. Just as I don't want government interference in my private life, I wouldn't want excessive government interference in the details of how I run my business. Yes tolerance is something that should be taught, but it isn't necessary to bring up anything of a sexual nature to teach tolerance. For people who live in the world, things of a sexual nature are everwhere you look. There's not some magical age at which human sexuality becomes all-the-sudden apparent. If the issue of sexual identity were to come up with my 7 y/o it would probably be in the context of whether a girl's a girly girl or a tom boy.....or if a boy is a sissy. That's what sexual identity means to him. He has a firm grasp on what he sees as sex-determined roles for kids his age. I'm not going to bring up the issue of sexual orientation with him because at his age it would be without purpose. HOWEVER he's aware that some people are gay while others are straight, and he has been for some time. For people to put blinders on about that and pretend that until we as parents "teach" our children that they won't be exposed is pretty short-sighted. BMI is not always predictive of obesity, but it's a good starting place....a screening tool. While you can pretty much look at a person and tell if they're obese, we're getting too complacent with a few extra pounds. I am in total agreement. It's bad. I got a notice from Jay's school yesterday that they'll be doing BMI checks on all the kids soon. I think that's a good idea, myself.
