Show me your papers please... ID's for going to the mall...
Fast replied to Fast's topic in Speakers Corner
This is one of the bigger malls in the area. I wouldn't call its primary customer urban trash. The two largest stores are Macys and Boston store. There is also a cheesecake factory and some other resturants and attractions that are aimed at more upscale people. Not to mention, I don't care who it is aimed at, this kind of thing is one more in a list of things I find questionable regarding civil rights. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I think that besides the rights of the public, the business owners have the most to lose in this situation. Those that will be affected most are non chain style shops that are owned locally and target a younger market. In general though, if I was the owner of a store in this mall I would be looking to get out with rules like the above. My concern is that they are not going to just be looking at ID's but rather taking record of the people going into the mall. This is something that would be easy because wisconsin drivers licenses are bar coded. I recently had to let them scan my license to buy cough medicine. I would have protested but I was sick. More and more we are seeing our personal freedoms and rights violated and people are allowing it to happen in the name of "public saftey." The problem that we are going to start to see is that eventually, they wont even bother drawing a line, they will just do whatever they feel is nessecary to protect us from us. (Not a new thing, I know, I just feel like complaining about it today) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Source Ya know, the more and more we trend towards this kind of thinking the worse life is going to get. They say there are some 40 malls across the country doing this but this is the first I have heard of it. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I feel somewhat bad for HRG man, but I don't know. Knowing more about the "company" will help. This fills in some details by the way: http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels/ I like the "printer" version for reading better than the interactive. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. What was his reason? Unless I hear a good one, I won't ever order anything from him. Well, that's one of the things that makes skydiving different than the ourside world. It's smaller. I know Bonnie of gravity gear better than Max, but if she went through a rough patch I'd wait and still do business with her. Max is a standup guy. I'll always only buy wides from him. Skydiving is small. It's about individuals and people aren't as resilient as big businesses. Cheers, Max, I hope all is well. JP That is true and I have one of his lenses and I like it. The problem is that I recomended him to a couple of people who had major problems with his company. I look bad because of it. That I don't really want to deal with. I can't in good faith recomend a company that has a known track record of major problems. I mean, I would be open to it but not till long after the company has reproven themselves. That goes for anyone doing business in skydiving or anything else for that matter. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. My parents house was similar except it was with panelling. The guy who put it up must have owned stock in a company that manufactured nails. There must have been a nail every 3-5 inches. They didn't bother putting anything under the paneling either, so you had no sound barrier between the walls. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I think that this might be a factor. I rarely say anything at the dz (they simply don't let me speak there, or they just ignore me). However, on the internet forum I used to speak a lot (not anymore since I'm permanently banned there). However, the other dz's from Flanders are also on the same board, so just changing dz might not help That right there is an important factor. Like others have said, own up to the mistakes you have made. People seem to forget that you can't be an asshole on the internet and expect it to not affect you when you step away from the computer. I am not saying that is what you did, but my guess is you pushed the limits of what is acceptable. The question now is how badly do you want to skydive. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. When I was learning to jump I spent quite a bit of time practicing on the floor. Arching wasn't really a natural position for my body / legs. It just takes practice. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Hahah yes, obviously so, but i don't understand why so many dropzones generally charge the same high rates. If you train twice the students at half the price you're still making the same amount of money and keeping a larger base of customers. That's what i was really getting at. I think a lot of the reasoning that happens is because people don't feel that they will see those kinds of returns. I think it would be hard to cut the price in half and expect to see double your students. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Officers Respond To Wrong Address; Homeowner Shot
Fast replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
They do handle the risks. Does that mean that they should not seek to mitigate the risks? This apparently isn't a story of a cop gone wacko. This isn't Dirty Harry out there going after Scorpio. Clearly in this case the risks were not properly mitigated and the situation devolved into the cop having to shoot someone. I am firmly in the same camp with people who belive I have a right to protect my person and property. I wont comment on who should and should not be punished in this case, because all the facts aren't known. The basic understanding however is that the cop didn't do everything he could have done or this situation would have come to a much better conclusion. I don't like the idea that people are putting forward that I should be afraid of the police. That might work ok for me if I lived in a different country, but in this country things ought not be that way. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Officers Respond To Wrong Address; Homeowner Shot
Fast replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
I personally have a problem with the fact that as a law abiding citizen some of you expect me to go around treating the police as if they will shoot and kill me at the slightest hint of danger and to be prepared for that I ought to be 100% submissive. You can argue about semantics and who is at fault, but the bottom line is that the situation is pretty sad no matter how you look at it. The other thing to keep in mind is that, being a police officer is a personal decision much like skydiving. If you want to get into that line of work you need to be able to accept the risks that come along with it. If you can't handle that, don't sign up to be a police officer / member of the military / etc. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I have had to clean the sensor on my XT once. It was due to condensation that had formed jumping on a very humid day. I have also run my battery out of power many times. I do however shoot video full time on the weekends. The general information that I can find on the two is: Canon Digital Rebel XT 400 shots NB-2LH Canon Digital Rebel XTi 360 shots NB-2LH That is with 50% flash use, so the numbers using no flash will be higher, but there is still a difference. Don't take this to mean I don't recomend the XTi. Just warning that you will have to be more conscious about battery usage. I have an XT and plan to get an XTi when I have more cash laying around. (HDV camera is next though) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Ya know, for a younger jumper, I think I am pretty good at spotting. I do quite a few jumps out of cessnas and end up being the one doing the spotting a lot of time for our turbine. That is just cause I care to do it. It isn't really that hard to do, it just takes some practice and a basic understanding of wind drift. I also like to find the windline and watch my canopy track in the sky on every jump. Spotting to me is also to include things like asking the pilot to move the GPS mark where the green comes on. I do things like that too, because all to often people wont spot and just go on the green. That is where a few jumpers like me help out in keeping it accurate all day. You might get me to admit to spotting at least 1 load where I had a good feeling we were going to land off, but everyone would have been warned that might be the case if I had ever done something like that. Something about, not wanting to go through clouds and not wanting to land with the plane. Though I can't say for sure that it has actually happened. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Here you don't need to have a licence to be able to jump with other people. You just need to be off student status (which I am). I never bothered getting a license, since I don't need them over here. From what you are saying, you need a change of scenery. I don't know how things in europe work, but in the US even a year can completely change the vibe of a DZ. People come and go. Getting along with people at a DZ is a push and pull type of experience. If the place you are jumping doesn't work, look around, find the next closest place to where you live that you can easily get to and try that. If you really want to skydive it won't be a question of "is this too much to deal with." If it is, maybe the sport isn't for you. I do think you should at least give it a try with a weekend or two at another dz. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. No, Bill, We don't want his number. We want you to sort it out. We know and trust you, but you are kinda scaring me now. take care, space Actually, I don't care at all what gauss number the magnets are. That to me doesn't matter and doesn't affect my ability to skydive. The things that matter to me are, does it affect an AAD (No) and does it affect my video equiptment (no) or altimeter (no) Beyond that, I don't care and wouldn't consider wasting Bill's time to know. That gets a little too far "into" it for even me and I do take quite a bit of interest in how my rig is manufactured and developed. For the record I own, recommend, and will continue to own a Vector3. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I have to agree with some of the assesment. There is far to little emphasis that is put on what you are teaching as a coach. I got my coach rating after a couple hundred jumps but I already had 90% of the knowledge in my head from listening to and reading as much as I could about skydiving. I have always felt that it was too easy for me and some other people I have met to get thier coach ratings. I think it boils down to people needing to take the responsibility seriously. Eventually I will be an AFFI, mostly because I care about how students are taught and I find it enjoyable to help them meet thier goals. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the last thread is that on the average people were finding the XTi to get a 1-200 less shots per charge. Mostly due to the larger LCD screen I think. I would recomend 2 batteries for either though. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. i WANT TO DOWNSIZE MY CANOPY ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Fast replied to riddller21's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When he has been jumping a 190 F111, I don't see any good reason to skip buying a 170. It will be significantly faster and very different. We also don't know if he is calculating his wingloading correctly. My advice is to demo the Pilot, Saber2 and Safire 2 in a 170 size and see if that makes you happy. There is a whole lot of learning that you can do on those canopies. Well I did the calculating He said 70kg's I added the rig to that. A ZP 170 will feel about the same as a F111 190 esp if it's older/has a lot of jumps. Of course no one is forcing him to buy a 150 but I suspect that's what he'll like better and a ~1.17 WL for 140 jumps on a 150 is fine. Missed that he said weight in the first part. Also, kg's sheesh... talk about having to do math (LOL) Anyways, I only said what I said because downsizing 2 sizes and changing planform seems like a big step. If he was dead set on buying a 150 I would at least recomend that he makes a number of jumps on a 170 as an intermediary introduction to ZP canopies. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
