  1. I keep getting told that I don't have enough jumps, am too young, and haven't been in the sport long enough to not enjoy jumping in the cold. The only thing I have to say about that is FUCK THAT. I don't like being cold. I will jump but I don't like it. Not one bit. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka
  2. You can say useless but all the scrapes and marks on my helmet tell me different. If I was so afraid of bashing my head into something I don't think I would be jumping out of planes. Some risks you just have to accept. The only place I can see better rated helmets helping is with swooping and even then the visibility tradeoff would prevent me from wanting to wear one. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 3. That works in theory but not in practice. The difference between your situation and skydiving is this. When you fuck up on a bike, if you just make one mistake the end result can range from death to just some adrenaline pumping through your veins. When you get lucky and don't get hurt you can stop, pull over, whatever. Think about what happened and slow things down. At least in many cases. In skydiving the outcomes can be similar, however, in most cases after you get done solving one "problem" or recover from one mistake you have often created another problem or have 2 more to deal with before you are on the ground and able to "stop." The chain of events that often lead to someone being injured or killed in skydiving is what gets you. I am not saying that doesn't happen riding bikes, but you have MANY more options to say fuck this, TIME OUT. In skydiving the only option you have for a time out is hitting the ground. One way or another it is going to happen, but you may not like the outcome. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 4. I am not meaning to single you out, but I have heard this before so I am just using it as an example. Brake fire cutaways were pretty prevelant at my DZ last year and I didn't really understand why. I think it just comes down to people being only able to take in so much information at once. If you have a brake fire, you don't have to land on rears, you just have to release the other brake. If you don't have line twists you can just unstow the other brake and the canopy will start flying straight again. You might just not know what people mean by brake fire though. You are absolutely right, landing any kind of mal is a BAD decision. But, your reserve and rigger are fallible. I am not trying to encourage you or anyone else to not cut away, just to take time to understand different malfunctions and the things you can do to deal with them depending on what altitude you are at. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 6. What he said.. Also, in those kind of conditions, I try to fly really close, but since you said this was one of your firsts... get some practice first before getting close. Yeah. I just put the camera right in thier face for a good portion of the jump. I hate cloudy days ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 7. Good on you guys for getting together and doing this. Just wanted to say good job (Even though I haven't seen it) cause you even have something at all. I edited our DZ year in review video last year and I know how much goes into a project of that scope. (Our video was 45 minutes long, and I had good footage for at least an hour and a half) I also have done editing for a film festival, though I have to say I did spend more time on that. As for the music argument, man, I just hate hearing about it. I wish people would just go back to ignoring it like they did in the past. If there was a reasonable way to comply, people would. There isn't and thats why people don't. iTunes is a perfect example of that. Prior to there being an easy way to get the music that people wanted, cheap, and when they wanted, people stole it off peer-to-peer networks. Now iTunes has most of that business because it is easy. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 8. yeah, I don't log very well cause 99% of my jumps are done at my home dz and the computer keeps track of all the info I want. Perris gave me a pretty hard time because I didn't have signatures on my jumps. They only let me jump because I had just gotten my coach rating the weekend before and that was a signed form. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 9. haha. He is right though. You should crack your faucets a little bit if it starts to get anywhere near 30 degrees in the house. Doesn't have to be a lot, just enough to have a little bit of water coming out. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Yeah, thats what I am starting to wonder. Linderman is going to play some huge role in how everything comes together. We need to find out who this guy is soon. 14. I agree with this quite a bit. I have made my fair share of mistakes this year and not being on a tiny canopy like some of the other people I know with less experience has saved my ass. I still jump a 139 @ 1200 jumps. I wish people would stop pushing new skydivers to downsize. The best one that I heard this fall was "My old rig weighed too much and since I downsized my wingloading didn't change that much anyways, I'll be fine." Heh, yeah,.. good idea, downsize right as we go into the off season. I hate when people do that too. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 15. They arent countless....we've known every one of them, why they died...the causes, the whys and wherefores. Some people just wont listen to facts and after a time it becomes pointless to have the same conversations with the same people...different faces....year after year. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it was insignificant. Meant more in terms of the sheer number of people that die doing this. Given the participation levels it really is a lot and in my mind people who aren't willing to realize that are just kidding themselves. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 16. If it really was spyware which isn't hard to belive, this is retarded. I think if anyone should be prosecuted for "risking injury" to children it should be the school for letting the firewall and content filtering to expire. 18. Sorry but people on this forum tell other people that they're going to die a lot. Hopefully you don't listen to everyone who tells you that your going to die... I guess there's good and bad about this website. The good this is you get to express what you really feel because you don't have to come face to face. And the bad thing is you end up bashing people when you wouldn't if you did come face to face. Nah I tell it like it is. If I see a person like the OP I tell him straight up that he is doing something stupid. There is a guy at my DZ who is jumping a canopy I think is going to get him hurt. So be it, I don't care if people hurt themselves. I only give a crap when they hurt others. If someone doesn't have enough sense to do things to promote self preservation I'm not about to shove it down thier throat. When people do things that can hurt others though it just really sucks. The thing I like about our OP here is that he is coming on here to whine about people who clearly have more experience than him giving him advice. He thinks they have attitude problems and need to stfu and leave him alone. That is irony at its finest. I know a couple people like this and I have made mistakes in judgement myself but at least I am willing to learn from the countless people who have died skydiving. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 22. Well, I am no tunnel rat but I have done up through sit flying in the tunnel. I can tell you that qualifying for it requires you to be in control on all axis on your belly (Up, down, forward, back, slide left, slide right, turns) and then you have to do most of that stuff on your back too. I really enjoyed learning to back fly. The first time I was in the tunnel trying it I had maybe 300 jumps and it took some work for me to understand it, but I did get it and was able to work on sit flying. The next time I did it was over this christamas and I had a whole lot of fun with it. I learned I can go up and down sideways and turn on my back. I worked on some sit stuff after that and had a good time with it too. I think my advice for you is to talk to the tunnel rat you are going to be working with and ask him what he specifically wants to see from you before you are allowed to work on sit flying. If the stuff he tells you about seems fun in itself then go for it. If not, stick to belly. Life is not just about end points, most of the time the journey getting there is fun too. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 23. They are looking at similar research with other psychotropic drugs such as lsd/psilocilin for depression and other brain related problems. A lot of drugs on the surface in a pure form are not bad for you in a physical way. Most of them just degenerate your acceptance into common culture and can lead to making bad decisions based on what is accepted social behavior. This goes back to a topic in an ethics course I took regarding the understanding of right and wrong. In today's culture right and wrong is defined different for many different people depending on what your overall moral beliefs are. This leads to these kinds of arguments. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 25. The only other thing I have to say is that, if you make it that long, after you know a couple people or even worse see a couple of your friends die skydiving, you will be just as bitter about new people making bad decisions as everyone else here is. Oh and don't think people here are happy about telling you that you shouldn't be jumping camera. Man you should have seen how mad one of my coach students was. He went out bought a whole bullet cam system and "mounted" it to a helmet. He thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Then I made him put his helmet away and go get a protec. He protested, "I know what I'm doing don't worry about me." Didn't change anything though. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
