  2. I disagree here. A CD only holds about 750megs of info, so if you fill a gig card, you have to burn it to two discs. A card that holds more than a CD can be a pain, for sales purposes. I agree and it pisses off other video people. It is good to be consistant. While it is possible to take a ton of pictures and just hope for the best, I find that being somewhere in the middle is the way to go. If I go up just trying to take good pictures only I miss them more often than I would like just because things are happening so fast. I try to bracket what I think will be a good shot with a couple that might or might not be good. When I first put the digital on I just went up and took as many as I could and that helped me to understand where I could get nice pictures. Now that I have more experience with it I take less pictures. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 3. I think he is looking for footage shot with an HC3. I guess, here is the real question... What are you trying to find out? If you want to know if the video quality is good, then you can just stop wondering, it is. I have shot a couple big ways that my buddy was in with his HC3 and when hooked up to a HDTV it looks awesome. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 4. Holy shit!!! I want to direct everyone's attention to a rational thought. I forgot what one on here looked like. wahhhhh A guy makes one one-liner crack a year and gets bitched at. It's a tragedy I say. For what it's worth if you read through some of the posts that I make most of them are more rational than 90% of the stuff posted here. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 5. Here I go blowing my 2000th post on this! Hah In all seriousness, if your DZ will let you shoot digital pictures for tandems buy digital and don't look back. Its worth the money. If you can't afford digital now save up till you can. It is going to cost you money to buy film and develop pictures while you are practicing. Also, you don't have to buy a rebel XTi, find a good deal on a XT and you will be just as happy. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 9. B_dog, If there is one thing that you take away from this thread. Understand that you are more likely to stick with it if you stay closer to home. You wont have to drive as long to go to the DZ every weekend. You wont have to remake all new friends in a month when you get sick of driving to the DZ 4 hours away when there is one closer. All of the arguments and talk about which program is better than the other doesn't matter. If both programs were readily available at the close DZ the last 3 pages would matter more. Just go to the closer DZ as was stated very early on. After you get your A licence check out some other places if you want. See what fits your personality best. Like rigs, cars, laptops, bikes, canopies, planes, etc. people will come on here spouting about which method to learn is the best. Understand that in many cases what is best for you is what is most accesable. One other thing to keep in mind. When you show up at your local DZ to learn to skydive, don't walk in there with preconcieved notions about how you should learn. If the DZ you are going to is a reputable one they will be able to teach you just fine. If you walk in there with a whole bunch of ideas of how stuff should be done or what you should be learning because of this website it is going to make it harder for your instructors to help you learn. ---------------------------------------------- On another note. My DZ still does static line training for first jump students because we can do it cheaper. It lets people experience flying thier own canopy w/o having to commit to a full AFF jump. We have a lot of people who make first static line jumps and never come back. If they do continue with the program though, eventually they just end up doing AFF. I did AFF and to be honest the first few hop and pops were a bit scary but it is stupid to think that they wouldn't be. Doing anything different for the first time can put a person on edge. I have gotten to supervise (as a coach) a few students doing thier second hop and pop. Some people will let them do it from 4k. I make sure we don't go higher than 3500 because I think it is important. All this arguing over which method is better and people are missing out on the real point of this thread. We have another person who wants to go skydiving. It isn't about which method is better, its about what is going to allow him to make it through student training. I know if I had to drive 4 hours there is no way that I would have finished. At least not as fast as I did. It had to be easy to get there for me because I am impulsive. Both methods are going to reach the same goal and in the end the pros and cons of each are easy things to overcome. I can understand where wildfan is coming from because I know her DZ. I think that a lot of her mindset comes not from the fact that she did static line but more from the size and people at her DZ. I am not going to start or get into an argument regarding if smaller or larger DZs are better. I am going to say they are both better but for different reasons. The goal in all of this is to find a place that you feel comfortable jumping at. That is what we should be telling this new student about. Not showing the fact that skydivers can be pretty arogant about things at times. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 10. Yeah. Also, note that when you come on the web people will throw around recomendations like they do with rigs. Most of the time it has to do with what they have. That is why you hear so much about dell being great. I don't really think it is. That is why I stopped buying them for the law firm I support. I now only buy Lenovo/Thinkpad because they were good before and are still good now. I have different needs though. I don't have to play games and I want them to last a long time w/o breaking. I can also spend more. I find the best way to deciding on buying a laptop is to ask people about the problems they have had with them. That way you get to find out if it will affect you. My current laptop is a Sager (alienware knock off) and I hate it. It is really loud, overheats, the screen-base connection is cracked, I had to remove the screen backlight switch because it stoped working and the LCD backlight wouldn't come on. I would not recomend this brand of notebook. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 12. Not likely. All it is going to do is change the system logs from dropzone.com to proxyblah.com. What your buddy was suggesting to you is that you create VPN connection to another computer that allows the outgoing traffic to be from that computer. That will work. The only thing that they are going to be able to tell is that you have an awfull lot of encrypted traffic going through the system. That in and of itself is a much bigger thing to be worrying about. Though they might not actually be watching for that kind of traffic. One of my friends company just switched thier remote office over to a system that connects through thier home office. He has a linux box at home that he SSHs too and then tunnels all his web traffic through that. They don't know what he is looking at, just that he sends a lot of encrypted data. The bottom line of it all though is that is pretty easy to bust you on it. There is just about nothing you can do on your computer to keep IT from knowing what you are up to. There are ways around just about everything that you could do to hide what you are up to. I would say to just do work while you are at work but that would be a little hypocritical. Being that I am in IT deleting and or parsing my traffic out of the web logs is something easy to do before anyone who would care can see them. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 14. I haven't been shooting that long. But everyone I have shot after about the first month (i wasn't saving them) till when I stoped doing my own editing is backed up on DVD in a binder. I put about 4-5 tandems to a DVD. If I shot it, I should have it. I write over tandem tapes, but I do not write over funjump tapes. They just pile up. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka

  21. Linux isn't secure. You can easily make it VERY secure, especially compared to Winblows XP, though. I used to use RedHat (back when it was free and basically the best distro) for firewalls in a corporate job I had. That was back in the mid 90's to about Y2k, though. RedHat is still free it is just called Fedora now or if you are really obsessive get CentOS which is RedHat enterprise repackaged. Though you probably knew that. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 22. When I was in NYC in 2001 with my parents we wanted to see a couple shows and we didn't have tickets. The only way we got them was to get the hotel concierge to find tickets. They also cost more than box office. If you have specific shows in mind that you want to see you should have tickets purchased in advance. We stayed in this nice hotel 1/2 block off times square which was a whole lot of fun, though quite expensive. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 23. Hi K Shut water off and find a convenient motel. Good news your a renter not the owner. Contact the owner and tell them you need what and when. Start making a list, keep reciepts notes etc in case you have to go to small claims court. yeah, get your stuff out of the water and call the owner of the property. They have a responsibility to not let that kind of stuff happen. It isn't your problem, it is thier problem. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 25. I lived at my parents for a long time because it cut down on costs and let me jump. I also had a full time job and could have afforded to move out if I stopped jumping. So I basically choose priorities. Now all my jumps are paid for working at the DZ. I have surplus money to pay packers so they get to jump too. I earn money shooting video, pass some of that on to the packers, and jump all the rest of it. I live in an apartment now and if I wasn't shooting video I wouldn't be skydiving. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
