I might ask what type of music they like, but try to stay away from specific song request since I might not have it available. If they ask for country, I'm sure I don't have anything I hate when people don't ask for specific songs. I can get almost anything thanks to the internet / itunes / etc. I hate picking music for people because I can only pick for my taste, not thiers. I also don't "get it" when it comes to what music is what genre or even what is considered "good" music for a genre. And I really really like music, it drives my mood a ton. So it isn't like I just never listen, cause I do all the time. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. What can we do about Skyride?
Fast replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Skydive.com doesn't sell jump tickets, they just help people find dropzones. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka -
The reason is simple. He isn't asking the right question. Most of the experienced people who post on here are able to read what a person writes and come to some conclusion (yes that is right, a judgment or assumption) of what it is they want to do. That is because it has been asked before or they have dealt with it at thier own DZ. People come on with pointed questions in an effort to avoid getting the answer that really matters. I personally don't know the BPA regulations about what is required to jump with AFF students because I am not from the UK. What I do know is that even if the BPA didn't specifically have a regulation against it, it doesn't make it a good idea. If you ask a question like the one he did you should expect to get a lot more than the simple answer you were looking for. Why? Well some people just like to come on the net and be an internet tough guy. Some people posting here actually care about you though. Some might not care about you, but do care about the sport as a whole and want to protect it. That is why people get answers that on the surface seem to not have anything to do with the question. He asked if there were BPA regs, but that question is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if there are regs or not because he doesn't have enough experience to be jumping with AFF students. At least not by what I would think to be traditional standards and based off what he has in his profile. His question gets ignored because it is a question that doesn't matter. People want to make it out to be all about the experienced person being "holyier than thou." It doesn't have anything to do with that. The simple matter is that almost everyone thinks they have the skills to do something until someone else comes along and shows or explains to them that they don't or they try and fail. I know that I'm gonna come to that realization at least once this summer. When it comes to students who couldn't possibly know better it is important to not let someone try and fail because the consequences are great. Maybe, I am not acting so much like an asshole as I might seem. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Watching Planet Earth last night was the first time I thought, "I would really like an HDTV." The shows (what I saw before I had to go to sleep) were just outstanding. I have HD and I gotta tell you I end up watching stuff that I would normally never sit and watch. example Sunrise Earth on Discovery HD theater is nothing but watching a sunrise somewhere on planet earth. No music. No people. No drama. Nothing but a sunrise. But the picture is so clear it feels like you are there. HD is definitely worth it. haha yeah for sure. I watched planet earth last night in HD. There was some stuff that was simply amazing. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Time out. My interpretation of this post is that the people who you were happy to get answers from are the 3-4 people posting on this thread who are in no position to say anything? They have less experience than you and no real perspective. The one guy who does know whats up is the one you think answered in a negative way. I don't like being an asshole but I am willing to be one. Straight up, you don't have enough experience to be jumping video on an AFF jump. Unless you have a couple hundred hours in the tunnel that we don't know about or your profile is way out of date. You list around 360 jumps, 200 of them freeflying, 100 belly flying. That right there is a problem. The thing is you are going to go ask your CCI or whatever anyways so I am wasting my breath. However there are a lot of other people out there who read a thread like this who might show up at a DZ and just try to get away with this or think that it is a good idea. It isn't. Being that I am a videographer at a DZ I might know a little bit about it. There are significantly more things that you have to deal with shooting AFF jumps that are way more complicated than shooting tandems or RW. You can't pose any risk to the student. How many RW jumps have you shot? How many tandems? How much practice with your camera wings do you have? Don't use camera wings? Did you know AFF jumps can go pretty slow because of the shape of the formation and that students dont like to arch? What do you do if the student tumbles out the door? What are the rules about where you can and can't be on an AFF jump? How do you time the exit? What are jumpmasters going to do at breakoff time? What is your rule about when to pull? When do you track? Are you heads up enough to not forget to break off if the dive goes low? Are you comfortable in the air near other canopies? (that shit happens) Where do you video from on an AFF jump? What is the number 1 rule of videoing students? Do you know to stay the fuck out of the way so the student can actually learn? Do you want to make the person you are jumping with more nervous? There are more questions too. I don't want to discourage you from posting but if you come on here fishing for answers eventually someone like me is going to give you the answer to the question you should have asked. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Pilots are NOT "dime a dozen"!

That might be the case somewhat, but I think the guys I know who don't have good paying jobs or are unemployed might argue about this with you. Yeah. I have done some "in front" of the tandem pair exits on our PAC but I am not willing to risk the plane or my cameras on anything agressive. I would be quite pissed if I sheered my camera off on the wing of the plane. I think the pictures look better but it isn't worth the risk on a low wing plane. Works great on an otter or caravan though. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. haha yeah. My answer: Depends on what I am doing. I will fiddle with camera settings all day long trying to get the pictures to look how I want. There is no one, two, or three "right" settings. 100% varies based on conditions. I like to aim for over 1/250 and around f/10 for general shooting. Just to ensure a good DOF and that motion is stopped. Beyond that, I'll try just about everything. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. i disagree. i did my first tandem in 1991 and was hooked. wanted to go for my license right then and there. but had a mortgage, bills, 3 small kids and no money. maybe if i had sold one of my kids, i'd have "found a way". short of that, i simply did not have the $2000+ for the training. the kids are older now, i still have that darn mortgage, and i have college bills to pay. if i didn't get that incredible birthday gift last fall, i'd still be without my "a" license. i think it's a bit presumptuous of you to say that if you have a desire to be in the sport, you will find a way. i completely agree cost *should* never have anything to do with it, but the reality of life is that it always will. now, if you have any suggestions how i can "find a way" to buy some equipment, i'm all ears

April 14th is the opening day for Sky Knights in East Troy, Wisconsin. As part of our opening day plans (ok, so we have been open all year, but it is the first weekend this year for our PAC750) we are going to have a helicopter there. So if you are in the area and want to get some early season helicopter jumps in and/or shake off the rust of winter come on out and make a skydive. Our helicopter jumps are pretty cheap as far as helicopter jumps go but I don't know exactly how much they are this year. Questions? Comments? Coming out? Excuse my ignorance: How do I turn off my cypress?
Fast replied to reinhart36's topic in Gear and Rigging
Important note: Unless you plan to travel with the cypress - i.e. Driving around in your car with your rig/cypress, it will use less power if you just let it sit there untill it shuts off as opposed to making the LED light up 4 times. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Experienced jumpers take responsibility for themselves. Even thinking about a waiver in this topic is just plain stupid. If you don't know better than to jump in winds beyond your personal reasonable limit, you need to be re-educated. The dropzone isn't there the babysit you, that is your own responsibility. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. There are some sites that you can use that allow you to have a set amount of space online to put pictures. You then give your clients a weblink and they go look at and buy pictures. You set the prices and out of what you sell it for typically comes a base wholesale print cost and often times a %cut of the profit. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. skydivers voluntarily quitting the sport?
Fast replied to aguila's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why? Because life changes. People get married, have kids, get a big promotion that they can't risk being away from in an injury, etc. People also fail to accuratly asses the level of risk involved in skydiving. When you see a bunch of friends die the risk level involved becomes crystal clear. Some people re-evaluate and keep jumping, some quit. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I would try to find a PC1000 on ebay. I have one now and am happy with it and my helmet is set up for it. I want an HD camera pretty bad, but with what is on the market right now I would have to change helmets and go to top mount which I don't really want to do. There are lots of things that would go into it for me. I only skydive because of the money I making shooting video, so its a bit different of a question for me. Things that are important to me are: picture quality, weight, size. In 3+ years of owning a mini dv camera I have used the AVin one time to dub some tunnel footage before they could put it right on a dvd. Since then I haven't touched a single analog source. The lanc port is nice for the cameye and never missing that tandem vid, but the higher end models all have it and because of what im shooting for / my personal belief a higher end model is all I would buy. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
