Ear plugs should be considered an essential piece of equipment for skydiving. I went ten years without using them and the last ten years with them. I sure my tinnitus would be less severe had I used them the whole time. Another thing I learned about earplugs is that, for me, they tended to lessen the fatigue factor of a tough day of tandem jumping. Quite is relaxing. The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

These are why I became a tandem instructor / examiner. 1. To be one of the first to take part in a new concept. (Pre drouge days, Ted Strong personally ran the ceritfication course). 2. To teach other jumpers to be TIs so as to further the concept. 3. Most importantly to me, to hear the first comment that came out of the student's mouth after opening. Out of about 2300 tandem jumps over 10 years, the only "tips" I received was a good cigar and a guy gave me a certificate for a free hamburger at his restaurant. We just never even considered being tipped as part of the deal I guess. Maybe things have loosened up a bit now. The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

I don't know if this actually happened but have heard the story a few times. In the mid 70s there was a jumper at Seagpoville, TX named Howard Hughes who's jumpsuit and helmet were black and white striped and looked exactly like an old time prison uniform (having seen him in it, that much I can verify). Also, about four miles north of the DZ there was and still is the Seagoville Federal Minimum Security Prison. Well, the way I remember the tale, either a very bad spot for a round canopy and/or a reserve ride ended up with Howard landing inside the grounds of the prison resulting in him being detained by prison officials for trespassing, among many other violations of state and federal laws and if nothing else, because he was attired as he was, accused of performing a "very shitty prank".

Speaking of Austrailian Rules Football, a few nights ago, this "Yank" watched an AFL game on the channel that usually has soccer. I had seen Aussie Rules on tv in the past and I always wondered WTF are those guys doing, this game makes no sense at all. Before the start of this game, I read over the rules and got somewhat educated about it. Hey, it turns out that its a real interesting game with some hits (no pads, no helmets) that you wonder how they survive. Now, I wish they'd show a game a week. Aussie Rules Football rocks!!! Good for him, quit on his own terms with some measure of dignity as opposed to Emmit Smith who's a pathetic shell of an athlete who can't accept the reality of a career that's over.
