(Man, was everybody relieved) Standing on the corner of Industrial Blvd and I-35 at the Trade Mart in Dallas when a blood splattered Lincoln convertable passed right by the spot where I was standing with the just freshly assassinated JFK inside. Stoned sitting in my hootch at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base watching a rather grainy black and white broadcast of the first lunar landing. Watching Monday Night Football at home when Howard Cosell announced that John Lennon had been killed. Playing Frogger in an arcade in Dallas when we found out Reagan had been shot. At my desk at work when one of our pilots called and said the World Trade Center had been rammed by an aircraft and to get to a TV quick. True enough Darius, however, many times it is the fault of the product. Take for instance the lamp table I purchased the other day at Walmart. Never heard of it back then. Students using ZP canopies. Freeflying, birdman suits, hybred jumps, speed skydiving, swoop competitions. Back then, if it wasn't RW, CRW, accuracy (very little even then) or the cutting edge discipline of skysurfing, it wasn't done. BASE is MUCH more common now vs then. AAd's have become universally accepted. By far, the main useage for them was for studunt/tandem gear. Probably many, many more that I'm not even aware of but the point is that it's been less than ten years and the sport barely resembles what it was when I stopped jumping, but hey, that's a good thing. You shouldn't beat yourself up over this but I know how you feel. In the span of three months, we had to put both our dogs down, one just got old and couldn't function anymore and the other had a stroke. Even though I know we did the right thing for both, there was still a certain feeling of guilt for having to do it. Your story reminds me of a Learjet incident that a friend of mine had at an airport in Idaho that was rather high in altitude and short on runway (5000'). My friend, who eventually went on to become a captain for America West. was dragging ass into the above mentioned airport in a Lear 24 and trying to touch down on the numbers to make maximum use of the available runway. However, at the approach end of the runway is a highway and about the time he crossed over the highway, yep, he struck a passing 18 wheeler with his main gear. My friend bellied in and after evacuating the aircraft he, his co pilot and the aircraft owner, who was the passenger, were somewhat taken aback by the sight of an 18 wheeler pulling on to the airport with 2 Learjet main landing gear sticking up out of the top side of the trailer.
