  1. If a sabre2 at 1.55:1 flys at 20mph I guess that my pd210 at 0.9: would be....10mph and a manta with a 95lb girl would fly at 4mph and under her round reserve -6mph airspeed?????????? Hows that work? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  2. ZigZag I think the mini three rings and mini risers are a step backwards from the old standard risers and rings. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  3. In this real world we can not turn back time and put a wind meter on our injured friend...so I challenge anyone to come up with a more accurate method. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  4. When all the data is not available I use a SWAG calculation...I came up with 44.3mph! Hope your friend gets well soon....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  5. First I would like to say...this is my favorite thread and hope to read a lot more stories of the bad 'ol days. I can not contribute 'cause I have only been around 10 yrs and any scary stories I tell could get me or my friends locked up! So....who can provide a picture of a silkworm( CRW ). No I have never tried to do it. Has anyone even seen it done( don't sound that hard). ....mike
  6. Dave Some day we will trade some stories! 'till then...
  7. Yep!!! Watch it...they get slippery. ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  8. Steve ....and it's not all about safety...on a really hot day, after a student load...I can open high with my big fat main...reach into my jumpsuit...pull out an ice cold beer, and with my low rate of descent...finish it off and wipe the silly grin off my face before landing. P.S. Never drop beer bottles from altitude. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  9. Beemertec I am very sorry for not using more tact in my first post as it does not lend to my credibility. But getting bored is a piss poor reason (as I see it) to downsize. Learning CRW or even better taking the Advanced Canopy Control Course will show you what really happens with canopy inputs( risers, toggles, etc). With another canopy close by, you will now have a reference. Here is another reference... my DZO bought some used gear with a Stiletto 150 in it and I jumped it a few times( WOW very nice). So I recommended he try it...now he jumps it as his main, he' about 135lbs with 2000+ jumps and does not complain about being bored. I also jumped a hornet 135 ( I'm 165lbs min) and think the wing loading alone makes it more of an ankle breaker in the making. ....mike
  10. Hey you know their right...it's much better to be dead or permanently crippled than to be bored! ( can you here me beating my head against the wall from there?) ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  11. I'm not crazy about soft reserve handles, but that is just 'cause of what I'm used too! If you can cut away with a pillow than it stands to reason you should be able to activate your reserve with one. Your gear has an AAD and I'll guess it has a RSL too! With the RSL functional you are actually using a SOS system, al you really have to do is cutaway and you get a reserve( don't rely on it though). You show an interest in freefly and those weird-Os like soft handles. Did you change your main deployment method too? I would think about keeping it the way it is. ( If shit don't stink....don't stir it!) Of course you would want to become familiar with it. Just a thought...mike
  12. Sport comes out the DZ for a quick visit a few times a year. He drops into Rob and Penny's often to shoot the shit. He has not been jumping at all but I think he may soon be ready for a change. P.S. The rag I have been jumping is his old PD 210. ...mike
  13. Oh...and you may need 2...'cause the first thing that usually happens after getting you knife out,is... you DROP IT! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  14. This sums it up for me...my canopy is so baffed I can only get a nice landing 'cause I time it perfectly and landing hanging from rear risers is gonna suck. I trust my rigger more than he trusts himself...he told me once ( after 3 reserve rides) " you know, reserves can mal too!" I said "YA,YA,YA." I would jump the reserve alone any day leaving the main on the ground(if someone I trust packs it). On the other hand, once I open my reserve, my gear is out for the weekend. P.S. I would not take a hook knife to my main unless it was a life or death kinda thing( it would not be worth the cost of repair). ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  15. One more reason to get CYPRES WRONG ANSWER!!!! This rig had a CYPRES, and no RSL, so you would be 100% correct in guessing the only way to open the reserve would be to cut the loop! But remember this...if you drag your gear all over the aircraft and dislodge the reserve pin and open the reserve on the step....you and others could die in a heartbeat! Right Answer Don't beat your gear up against the aircraft or anything else. CYPRESS can not solve every problem that occurs during skydiving. P.S. his main opened just fine... ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  16. This is a real parachute, it's fun to jump, and strong enough to safely lower you, your friends and a small aircraft. Not recomended in aligator infested areas. I have 3 jumps on mine.
  17. I have seen this exact same thing on a Talon rig only the pin was bent at 90 deg. on exit and was found after the jump during packing( reserve flap would not lay down flat). We could not pull the reserve handle on the ground!!!! The pins on my rig are not well protected and my risers are not covered....this is why I am careful around the aircraft. No rig is bullet proof but enough caution can keep you alive a long time. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  18. Cool...at least someone has heard of or seen them. I see what you mean about tolerances. ...mike
  19. Murray Cool CRW video(looks a little scary)... P.S. Just had to steel the pic of Sport making faces, hope you don't mind. ...mike
  20. Canopy control: We teach canopy control including accuracy theory to the point of it being the primary method of canopy control on the first jump. Radio is used as back up only and to help with flare timing. This skill can then be practiced on every jump. Students take FJC, do some IAD's until exits and canopy control reach an acceptable level( 4-6 jumps). Then the can progress to freefall instruction. AAD: FXC12000( rev J) no problems ever and 1 save. They must be maintained to work properly. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  21. Ok we're so far of topic " and it was getting old anyway" that I figure all's fair. ===================================== A stranger was seated next to Little Johnny on the plane when the stranger turned to the Little Johnny and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger." Little Johnny, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, "What would you like to discuss?" "Oh, I don't know," said the stranger. "How about nuclear power?" "OK," said Little Johnny. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. "A horse, a cow and a deer all eat grass. The same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?" "Jeez," said the stranger. "I have no idea." "Well, then," said Little Johnny, "How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?" ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  22. This is very cool!!!! Hope to see more pics. ....mike
  23. Don't...It doesn't help " we know your not stupid" Cool Keep asking questions...wade through the answers...talk to your coaches/instructors, learn as much as you can....stay alive....have fun! ....mike
  24. Just one....wish I had three! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  25. Unstable Do you normally do a flight control check? If so when? Do you pack with inspection "look for stuff that may fail on you next jump"? Do you know what to look for when packing? Do you have a back up plan for failures...how are you planing on safely landing when a toggle comes off in your hand at 200'? ...mike
