Can anyone tell me how line dump can cause hard openings? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -

mikeat10500 replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
[sarcasm on]Yeah cause you never have to worry about an old worn out lineset getting out of trim. That would never cause bad openings....[sarcasm off] I was not aware that when a canopy gets out of trim it could cause hard openings. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
Congrats on the 2k and I love your site( and your teams attitude). ...mike P.S. If I ever win the lotto I buy a shirt! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

I guess that is why I never buy a main until someone else has completely worn it out! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
What are my options for anniversary jump?
mikeat10500 replied to RogerRamjet's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
First off...I love you name...(thats is what I call all the new jumpers that I think need to slow down some) Static line, tandem...WTF? I was thinking more like upside down, naked, night CRW on acid. Ok maybe you should do an AFF jump( they don't call them buddy jumps anymore). Welcome back...have a blast. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
Chris I like that it's good! P.S. That has always been one of my arguments when people ask why I don't get an AAD. " But you may be unconscious...unable to pull!" me..." Sorry life has never been that kind to me...I'll be wide awake, fully aware of my screw up and it's consequence" ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Cant remember, but I did read it somewhere...which does not make it factual in any way. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

I think it referred to the learning curve in the bad old days...if you were lucky enough to get past the first 20-30 jumps you were in! Fatalities for low time jumpers were higher back then. Now-a-days students are looked after and the fatality rate for them is very low. So in the bad old days once you knew you shit it was blue skies all the way! ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Better lift/drag ratio is just converting the greater available forward speed into the desired lift, through canopy design, trim, etc. Energy can not be created or destroyed only converted...in this case...forward speed into lift. Flaring...converts forward speed to lift( also induces extra unwanted drag)...when swooping...only convert as much forward speed as required to keep you above ground level so as not to waist the forward speed...swoop far! Hook turns do not increase speed as much as people think( 2-4mph) in the turn itself. 'cause more forward speed can generate more lift longer. The PC distorts the canopy because it slows down the attachment point...holding it back...holding the whole canopy back...more drag=less speed. Think of a Tandem....big drogue...more drag=less speed... drogue release time...less drag=faster... main inflates...more drag=slower Yes but I think they use, micro line, colapsible pilot chutes and low profile designs to reduce drag for an increase in forward speed which inturn can be converted into lift. Bill , I think I know what you are trying to say...that canopies have a max or fixed speed( at a fixed wingload)...any loss of drag will only result the increased speed being converted to lift due to design but this does not change less drag=faster...what you choose to do with the energy that is not being wasted in drag is up to you, but more energy will be available if you reduce drag. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

What are your Cutaway and reserve handles?????

Bill So people use collapsible pilot chutes for what reason? (next question will include micro lines, and the move to low profile canopy design). ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

What are your Cutaway and reserve handles?????
mikeat10500 replied to samp76's topic in Gear and Rigging
Pillow cutaway, metal reserve( old stuff ). No problems using them both( that is what I was trained on). Don't like reserve handle ( Martian Baker style) 'cause it is just looking to get hooked on something. ...mike -
Rip cord activated, spring loaded pilot chutes may have some advantages( we still use them for reserves) but training students on gear that is different than what they will be using in the future is just foolish. It is cheaper and safer to train on the same gear that they will use for the rest of their skydiving career. ( that goes for SOS systems too!) P.S. And even static line... ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

This is what I believe I know about pilot chutes. My experience comes from 500+ jumps ( which means nothing cause I can not usually see the PC) and over 1000 IAD's ( where I can clearly see the PC in action). I was taught both in using a toss out and when performing IAD's to through the PC with force. I think this is utter bull shit. The PC does not weight enough to through it anywhere in a 120mph wind( or even at 80mph doing IAD's). I truly believe pilot chutes should be placed. That is, place the PC in clean air away from your body. If you are falling ass over tin kettle when you pull you could impede the deployment...but if the PC finds clean air, you will be at line stretch soon! If like you say it gets in front of you arm expect some bruises from the D-bag and be ready for the possibility of a mal of some kind( although it would be rare). I have had one lazy pull ( on a pull out) where the PC ended up on my back between my shoulder blades...I looked back to see why I was not getting a parachute ( at 2000') and broke the burble ( check '000) PC then did it's job in a flash. There is a possibility of getting a toss out PC in clean air and it not do it's job( have seen this once). The PC itself can mal...if the bridle takes a half hitch around the hacky and holds the PC upside down( that sucks!). ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

My frank and valiant opinion on downsizing questions
mikeat10500 replied to BMFin's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sounds smart to me! My DZO went from a square 140 to a Stiletto 150 and seem very happy with it. I have jumped both, the 140 is faster but the Stiletto is better in many ways. ...mike -
Does this help? >>>snip>>>an IMAX sized 'movie' called "Adrenaline Rush" (formerly known as "Courage"), high speed link ...mike

Yes...but not in the name of safety or research. The pilot likes to park the C-182 between the tie downs witch are marked with pylons. I like to land between the pylons. We like to get there at the same time. I did what I had to do to win...soft landing crosswind in deep brakes( hands in toggles making pistol signs at pilot wile I fly in front of just stopped prop) looking down wind( not at where I was landing) with big ass dog main and over 300 jumps at the time. Never been injured( excluding closing jump door on my thumb). Never do this...Props kill and this is the only pilot that I know that would think it funny. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Amir I think it is very simple. Higher wingload=faster(air speed) Less drag=faster(air speed) Higher wingloads can be accomplished by eating more burgers( add weight) or getting a smaller parachute( ram air thingy ). Less drag can be accomplished by things like micro-lines, canopy profile, collapsible pilot chute, bringing your feet up, cutting away, etc. Slowing down well its hard to change your wingloading during flight( though not impossible I'm sure) but you can induce drag by using toggles or rear risers to create some lift and trade off air speed (nothing is free in this world) or distorting the shape of the wing ( wing warping) . that's 3 cents worth....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

PhreeZone I looked around DZ.com for some measured air speeds under canopy and found very little. (1)>snip>>I measured the air speed of both a 190 Sabre and 190 Triathlon. Both were 30 mph with about 230 lbs suspended. (2)>snip>>I used a Kestrel 1000 which resulted in an airspeed about 23-24 mph on a Sabre 170 loaded about 1.1. Going on this info it would seem wingloading does indeed effect air speed (more than you think) and you need a smaller pilot chute! Watch out or I'll blow right by you with my PD210!! The whole idea of lower wingloading is to reduce air speed ( and the related ground speed) and to reduce force of impact (speedxwieght) when someone biffs. You can however slow down your canopy to fly relitive with someone else using toggles, risers or a combo of both(welcome to CRW). ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
-
WOW I did not know they were that close in speed and if you are correct than wingloading to injury severity is a total myth(not to put words in your mouth). Yes...rounds do not really fly....the descend with forward speed. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
