  1. Mikkey Thanks for the picture man. I am looking at photos taking from the movie by Gennadi Ikonnikov, featuring Yuri Belenko's double malfunction and landing on the tarp stretched out by his fellow jumpers. Very messy looking mal with high rate of decent! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  2. Murray This weekend I drank beer, swapped war stories, and even skydived with Sport. It was a good time! P.S. re: CRW. He said something about using a gun to defend himself , if I ever came near him with an open parachute! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  3. Cool...I'll check that out! Sadly...I guessed (Wild Ass but in no way scientific) soley based on the extent of your friends injures.I now believe I guessed aprox 10 mph to high(based on wingloading vrs air speed info available). I had the misfortune this weekend of dispatching my first student that resulted in an injury(minor). I know people will get hurt in the sport but I still hate to see it. I wish your friend a speedy recovery.
  4. Murray I wonder if I could talk Sport into doing a little CRW this summer? (I got some bad ideas and need the pics for my web page). ...mike
  5. Free stow= no elastics or tube stows(looking(sp) or otherwise)...lines Are just placed in container neatly. Sometimes lines will be stowed in a pouch that's Velcro closed...but I don't call that a free stow. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  6. I did it for years and never had a problem...then I switched to the black SkyBandz (which work very well also), then I designed a stowless D-bag and have never looked back! I toss my lines in there pretty loose too but I think it is important that the looking stows be snug enough to be last out!( I keep tension on the locking stows by packing real messy like...and forcing it in the bag) Although I have never had a problem, I don't believe most people would recommend it( loose stows). I have seen 2 sizes of tube stows large/small and the large are way to big for micro lines( that's what I use). ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  7. Maybe I did see a picture?...my short term memory=toast! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  8. In Canada we went 180 days(plus or minus 6 months). Thread on this subject ...mike Oh...and there is a poll too! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  9. 2 Stack ( CRW) lower canopy has very large cells like DC-5 or XL Cloud, Top guy/gal enters center cell feet first up to chest line...smiles for camera. Landing it is not recommended. I know where there is an XL Cloud. I have never seen a pic...maybe it's a myth...but if it works in cartoons...it's good enough for me. ...mike P.S. It all about good pictures! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  10. The only advantage I can see in a spring loaded PC (for unstable deployment or stable for that matter) is that the inexperienced( and possible freeked out) students hands are not in direct contact with the pilot chute itself. This would be a much greater concern if they were alone( without an AFF instructor to make them release it). ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  11. Q. A.(part 1) A.(part2) You got It...back in the old days before AFF...you were out there on your own...and if you pulled unstable...a spring loaded ripcord activated system was the safe way to go. We don't go to hand deployed reserves because you could be unstable during deployment( at least not face to earth) but more important than that the PC is safe inside the container so you don't have a reserve deployment when you don't want it. ...mike
  12. Simulated rip cord pull for a toss out system. News paper in placed in PC pouch and hand deployed to prove competence wile performing an IAD. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  13. Downloaded it, watched it , recommend it! Thanks for the video...nice quality...lots of action, including head down( feet up in Canada), CRW, and swooping. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  14. Yes they are...the concern is even worse...the jumper under a stressful situation could revert back to first learned anatomic response and dump the reserve into the malfunctioning main!( This could happen even after 2000 jumps on TAS and correctly responding to previous mals) With a BOC toss out TAS system you can do IAD's,AFF,solo freefall and continue for the rest of your skydiving career on the same type of gear. The school only need buy one type of gear for their students and teach one procedure. As for cutaways not followed by reserve deployment...RSL's save lives! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  15. Arlo Yes it would be...and I will say hello for you on the weekend. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  16. Close enough...Scientific Wild Ass Guess. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  17. If you seen Kenny's video, you would agree it was worth every penny! Too rich for my blood but I can now learn from him. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  18. A friend of mine just got back from Fla...and spent $7000 in the Tunnel (at Orlando)...I saw his video... WOW,he is now the shit(as they say). The coaches are nothing short of magic! ...mike P.S. there is one long lanky girl coach in his video that defies physics. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  19. No one is even going to ask what SWAG stands for...are they? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  20. See next Quote. That is why we teach to be aggressive and throw the pilot chute into clean air. Yes the relative wind will take it directly off you hand but you are now at full arm extension. Nuff said. Blues, J.E. Fair enough! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  21. Nothing wrong with that plan! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  22. Are you saying line dump contributed to this. Cause I may actually believe that! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  23. I can say that I have been slammed so quickly that by the time I was able to look up the slider was already wrapped around my helmet... I have also looked up to a fully inflated canopy anda slider at the stops... and I normally watch my deployments and and on hard ones will watch the videos... Line dump = out of sequence deployment... canopy starts to inflate before line stretch... it can and does happen. Josh Are you saying you know for sure you have been slammed by a canopy with the slider coming down at a normal to slow rate? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  24. Can anyone tell me how line dump can cause hard openings? Normally the pilot begins to slow you and then the lines stretch and as the canopy opens you are slowed down as the canopy deploys in a staged succession. If you have line dump, the canopy is usually coming out of the bag before you've stretched them out. Meaning the initial jerk you usually get from a small pilot chute, will be an initial jerk that you get from a much larger, partially deployed canopy. Sorry dude...can't eat that...smells funny! Has anyone been slammed to look up at a partially deployed canopy? A partially deployed canopy is called a snivel. It's when you get a fully deployed canopy slider down too fast that you get slammed. Slider=opening shock inhibitor( thats why they are their). If the slider comes down to fast it will hurt. ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  25. No,no,no sweetie I did not think you rude! My old bones really like soft openings(next to a mal). I have never owned a newer canopy mostly for $ reasons, so sometimes I don't know what I'm talking about. ...mike(kissing up now) ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
