New Skydiver's Question...About Reserve Chute
mikeat10500 replied to Kramer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
580:3 3 reserve rides in the first 241 jumps. ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
Wow...I try to avoid people(and their parachutes) at opening alt! ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

My reserve turns fast enough for me. But you will not get drive in high winds(read landing backwards). I have landed a lot of seven cells that way too! A 100lb girl under a large seven cell will not get much drive on a windy day anyway! This is where accuracy comes in. "Good accuracy is a survival skill." Cause there cool! Stand up landings and all! Not to sure a lot of people made a choice based on safety. It may be a fad. ...mike Two square parachutes(and I use the term loosely) and an AAD(AED) don't sound safe to me, but it is the most common setup I've seen. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Ok lets talk about reserve malfunctions... Cypress fires @ 750' while you are flailing around on your back semi-conscious after a freefall collision! Bad body position(not your rigger) is the cause of your line over(or steering line entanglement). How fast can you make your ram air inflated wing landable? A ram air inflated wing is just that....a wing! Broken wings don't fly for shit. Parachutes are round! Squares(Tringles, ovals, etc) make good mains. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

I have opened my round a terminal 2 times....It woke everyone up for miles! ...mike P.S. Cool story with happy outcome via round reserve! http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=486723;search_string=search_string;#486723 ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Which part?...All of it? ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

With a AED( Automatic Entanglement device) if you are unconscious when it fires...a round will wake you up! If it does not...your already dead! If your are conscious and activated your main low(much more likely to happen) then a main/reserve entanglement is less likely because squares fly and rounds drag. If you did experience an entanglement with 2 squares....good luck!...with an open round(even messy)...you should live. Round reserves pack large, cause they are large(big reserve). Modern round reserves(1980+) steer ok. I jump a Strong lopo-26 and have had 3 rides on it without injury. Square reserves are said to be more reliable(I question that) but if you ever needed to dump your reserve into anything other than clean air....like a main that can not be cutaway or an aircraft door( that can not be cutaway) I would recommend a round. It's not that it is more likely to open...but more likely to be of use after it does. ...mike P.S. Strong still sells the lopo-26 in a couple versions.(They got most of the bugs out in the first 30,000 builds I think!) ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

When to advise SL to an AFF student?
mikeat10500 replied to poohbeer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Your awareness will improve with every jump. If you can lower your stress level and get/stay current...than you can do anything you want(total freedom). Here is the tricky bit....to lower your stress levels you must ask yourself...."Why am I so worked up?" My answer was "I'm afraid I may die!" So I gave it some thought and made my choice. I decided the risk was worth it...You may not. ....mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
I'm in the same boat. I need a "C" license for a Tandem rating. I should have got it 5 years ago when it was easy. Now I need 100 4 ways, style time in 1.5 sec,and 300 jumps into shark infested water or something. But what can you do? ...mike

I think the RSL is a cost effective life saving device that anyone, regardless of experience should strongly consider. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

what kind of student rigs does your dz use?
mikeat10500 replied to groovychic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We don't....there is no advantage to SOS at all in my eyes. I have retrained a few of people over the years and never liked it. I simply can not undue the damage done! First learned...first remembered. I do have a system for retraining from SOS to TAS but can only guess how effective it is. One jumper with 8 jumps showed me it worked for him...but that is only one guy, reacting to an emergency 15 mins after I retrained him. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists. -
Night Naked Backwards CRW....Sounds like a good idea to me! ...mike

Quote Land your reserve with no flare, your breaks stowed and your body limp.Quote That's how I always land my reserve! ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Yea me too!...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Don't make me fly circles around your PD 210 butt. hmmmm....speaking of girly canopies. Wile you are flying circles around me...you may as well dock! We could do a DRAG PLANE with your little Crossfire.

580 jumps,162lbs+22lbsgear,no formal canopy training,careful. main=pd210@0.88:1 reserve=lopo26(original)@0.42:1 ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Never. Too distracting. thats because your busy flying your canopy lisa.. I sing to myself under canopy. Usually Mach 5 by PUSA.

stiletto 2=sounds like a girls canopy(nice girls) velocity =sounds fast Vengence=sounds dangerous! Katana =? How 'bout "Wrath of God"=that sounds sporty.

My rig's cheststrap is like this( not doubled at the end and a little short). When showing it to another jumper I noticed it was not always that way. It was cut off and hot-knifed on the end. Wonder why? ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Luke Lucas taught me my first jump course just over ten years ago. I have not seen him in a couple of years. I assume he was the DZO in Waterville back then(25 years ago). I have jumped a bit with Richard Wellman over the years and he often told a story of him and Tuna(after the hill jump) doing unplanned low altitude CRW into power lines at the Bridgewater Exhibition demos. This is a major advantage at our DZ....the ground is often soft! I've seen hook turns that ended in a 2 foot bounce and the guys get up and walk(limp) away alive. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
-
You were there when Tuna bounced? I had herd that later he said he did not actually hit the roof...but when found in the back yard all he could say was....roof,roof,roof. So it was assumed at the time the roof broke his fall. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
-
Yes you are correct....but the post asked for the most extreeme case and so far, that is mine. I got away with it cause I jump a pull out and shortened the closing loop so the flaps alone provided tension on the loop. I am not recommending this in any way. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Hornet 135 in, were a Cruiselite 220 came from. Container's main pack tray about half full...3 jumps. The hornet seemed faster. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Crazy When I approach the ground with any canopy, of any size" or shape for that matter", I know that I could get hurt. I prepare for landing in my head before putting my gear on...looking at wind indicators, etc. I know I actually have a greater chance of getting hurt under my own 210sqft canopy, than a borrowed hot rod due to jump freq. I believe 2 things have kept me in one piece over the years...attitude and luck. Instructors can teach skills but how do you instill attitude? ...mike P.S. Good post! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.

Oh Yea! As soon as a mink shows up...knocked up...they blame a Canadian. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
