  1. You can do it...my DZO has 2000+ jumps and no mals yet. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  2. I think you will find 8'-10' the norm and no problems related to bridle length unless doing CReW. I had a PC entanglement once and read that the shortest safe bridle length is 4'9". So I had some" about half" chopped off. This may be an unwise idea with a toss out system. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  3. No sorry in that pic we are full dressed, the naked CReW shots wouldn't fit!!! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  4. Once I packed half the bridle in the D-bag "unaware...it seems my bag stop is more of a bag slow down" and when I pulled it felt like I was swinging a cinder block on the end of the now 2 foot long bridle. I use a strong pull cause I keep that pin in there tighter than a nuns wazoo. I looked to see what was going on and found I had pulled the bag off my back and to the right side into the wind. My super loose line stow method produced some extreme spaghetti. So I released the handle and waited for the bag lock. My main opened with 1.5 line twists which I quickly cleaned up and went on my marry way. Sometimes it helps to have a horseshoe where it counts. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  5. Riddler That makes your bridle length nearly double mine. 4'9"... just clears burble. " Are you sure you not bragging?" ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  6. In freefall your heart can pump strong for 60sec and maybe >2 min under the pocket rocket. With CReW your heart can POUND for 10 min at a time. ..mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  7. SKR Thanks...I thought I was the only one who felt that way. We had a DZ here in Canada that was in operation for 26 yrs. Round/Round manual deployed belly mounts, and cuttaways were not taught to students"capewells". First off ,I have never been there or know the DZO. I do not know for sure but have heard of only one fatality"power line strike" in all this time. So I figure they were not smoking in at terminal on a regular basis. No RSL/AAD . I'm not saying we should return to days of old, it's just I'm not sure how much safer the sport really is today. Like you say...safety is a state of mind. just thinking out loud...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  8. Same here...it's not a question of limitations, just don't need to test them anymore. Which brings me to my question. It looks like you have been in the sport a lot longer than I...Do you think gear has truly become safer over the years or just technically superior in performance? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  9. If your house is close to the DZ...it's called a bad spot...not a demo...less paper work! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  10. That's the guy I read about...big canopy yes...but not as stable as the old Cruiselite I had. "and not as big". ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  11. I looked in Paragear cat to find recommended min wing loading for the Stiletto. "Varies with landing conditions"...that's a big help! So what's the rule of thumb? I know a guy jumping @ 1:1 aprox it seems ok. mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  12. By telling your story, and better yet having the balls to admit you may not have handled it the way you would next time...You may be responsible for saving somebody's life in the future...that's not bad! mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  13. I used hang inverted, feet in risers until I read about I guy that went in that way " I had a very stable canopy though". After that I thought...what if a first jump student see this...what's to stop him/her from doing it" and landing with feet stuck in the risers". Then they could all point at me and say...there is the BAD man!!!! So now I try to behave in public. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  14. I know, I know. That's why I said I might be wrong... . It looked to me like this, too. However, I still wanted to make that safety remark, even if it does not pertain to this picture. Sorry man...hope I didn't come off as a smart ass, sometimes I drink n' post. mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  15. Anything is possible...but not always a good idea. mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  16. I find this hard to believe? Line dump may cause mals but hard openings? I pack my lines in tube stows so large" oversized " ,cause I'm lazy and crazy, that my dzo runs out behind the barn and pukes when he sees me pack! Some have even called it free stowing. I never have hard openings" 1000' snivels". They sold me a ZP pilot chute "very cheap" with the hope it may speed up my openings " my old one was baffed when I bought it 400 jumps before that". I made no diff at all. The slider vrs the tired f111 is what makes my canopy open slow/soft. mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  17. I have read a lot about 2 square out situation. I have also seen some video, not sure where. This is my understanding of 2 squares out. Big student gear is less likely to kill you but still can. Small main/reserve very dangerous. Landing side by side and bi-plane very dangerous.. can turn to down plane in a heart beat...just as you make some final adjustment for landing. Cutting away bi-plane or side by side again very dangerous...main risers twist/recoil and like to grab reserve risers below slider and haul slider up the reserve. Cutaway down plane...good idea! 2 squares out bad idea...my advice is to avoid this at all costs. I don't believe people think about this enough. mike's 2 cents. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  18. I wear a Ptotec cause it's like wearing no hat at all in freefall...the air blows right through...but they said by now I have hearing damage. No sign of that yet. A full face is like being indoors, like playing a video game. If you add, cypress, pro dyter, etc... it is a video game! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  19. I don't think you see what you think you see! I took a closer look at the pic and believe "hope" the cable is longer than it looks. "passing under main lift web out of site". mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  20. I like the reserve handle...as for the cuttaway...I like the reserve handle. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  21. QuoteThis is probably the most entertaining example of that I've seen.... I second that through my tears of laughter. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  22. QuoteI inhale as much air as i can, so my chest is the biggest it can be. and then tighten... I had a horse that used to do that all the time! Smart old bastard. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  23. I used to pull at 2k. line stretch at 1500'-1800' the norm. We did not call that low. The basement starts at 1000'. I went under 2k once to avoid other jumpers on a 4-way zoo thinking "no one would be stupid enough to be down here. Wrong!!! Next thing I see is one of them tracking UNDER me. I went to 1500' in freefall and they were all gone.As for exits...well your not at terminal are you! In my country It's not permitted " excluding military" to let things fall out of an A/C below 2200'. But if your going to exit say...1500' I would recommend and air speed of 90mph ias and use this speed to start deployment. Spotting for forward through to put you at a good setup point for landing. I would guess you would get slider down 300 from exit with gear like mine. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  24. Sorry Hook...could not resist the chance to stir up shit!!! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  25. ... 500 ft in a wrap, I doubt I would cut away, probably deploy the reserve and hope ....and hope a round pops out and clears all the...? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
