  1. You might want to take a look at this before you make your decision (the website is down at the moment, but it will likely be up by Monday). I checked out the link you provided...it was a good read and made me think! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  2. ...to know what his doing. I shant make the same mistake again. Good,...yer learning. Trust no one" unless the situation requires it" and live longer. P.S. I'd be careful with that parachute. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  3. That's not exactly true...read the whole BSR... should say something like " on delays exceeding ? sec" ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  4. However, Stilettos are PARTICULARLY unstable even in light turbulence when underloaded. You are more than likely 100% correct, my hi-performance canopy experience is very limited, I did find the stiletto" I jumped" to be sweet! Q. Do you think there is any advantage with the Saber(1)...ie: more forgiving to inputs, light wing loads, turbulence, etc? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  5. Or overloaded, or optimal loading, the key here is turbulence. The reliable old Boeing 737-200 has been known to take a face plant after encountering " turbulence". ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  6. This appears to be true with the reserves as well. I have not had the opportunity to pilot and land a small 7 cell at heavy wing loading but assume it could be interesting. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  7. you obviously had no clue that I was saying that tongue in cheek.... Sorry Skymedic...I knew what you were saying and my post was not directed at you" or not my intention anyway". I just needed to steel from a post to help make my point. Education over regulation. The first one can be effective. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  8. Ok lets take 1 step further...100% of the skydivers in the world wear AAD's. Out of the 49 fatalities that happen in the year 3002, how many are AAD equipped? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  9. I jumped a stiletto 150(a few times) @170lbs and found it smooth, easy to center, and would generate ample lift on a smooth flare! I remember thinking this might make a nice student canopy when underloaded at bit! I have not jumped enough sabers to comment on them. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  10. Perhaps that because more jumpers have AADs. If 90% of the jumpers wear AAD's, aprox 90% of the fatal jumps would be w/AAD. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  11. 3 kids... ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  12. Lost track of time on first 2-way. Pulled low for about 100 intentionally. Never went below 1000'. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  13. >>...I think outlawing hook turns would save FAR more skydivers than an AAD ever will....or how about a canopy regulation of some type..... Some of us are in the sport to get away from rules and regulations. Jumpers always say "Why do the call it FREEfall...it's not free!!! It's called free fall because you are free of the A/C,free from the life you lead on the planet below, free to fly your body through the sky, free to do what you damn well please. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  14. Excellent post...I couldn't agree more. I would never tell someone skydiving is not for them. The one true advancement made in this sport is to make it accessible to the general public. When you look at 30 first jump students through bloodshot eyes at 7:30 am, you don't always see 30 jet fighter pilot types"with the right stuff". It's the job of the instructor to turn each and every one of them into lean, mean, skydiving machines. If someone truly wants to do this stuff I can't see it ever being impossible. I myself along with I'm sure many others have at one time lost altitude awareness and went O shit ...better pull.... does it mean I shouldnt be in the sport ...NO it means I better pull my head out of my ass and pay better attention...LESSON LEARNED!!! No matter how RIGHT you do everything, things can go wrong ...doesnt mean you should quit..just get more training and learn form the mistakes....now if that mistake costs you your life... then thats the ultimate risk we take.,... In the words of Lane Frost.."DOnt be afraid to go after who you want to be and what you want to do...but also dont be afraid to pay the price!!" jason ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  15. I pass that along. I was talking to them on the phone last post. thanks mike. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  16. AAD's are very useful for those hot four ways going for that extra point at 1100' making deep eye contact. But I if your using square reserve I recommend hooking it up backwards w/ normal brake settings so they fly away from each other opening! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  17. I have nothing against AAD's unless you jump square/square configuration. Whhhoooooooo now that's scary!!! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  18. Skylark You buying? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  19. I have had a similar experience. My chest strap is very short. It was a hot summer day "nude jump". To this day I can't believe I miss-routed the chest strap but when we turned to dump" no track gonna land a bi-plane", my r/h main lift web slipped off my shoulder. I looked for my chest strap...gone w/chest mount alti II and hook knife. Had to cross my arms on opening to hold myself in the rig" worked good though!!!". After opening found chest strap under right armpit, no alti or hook knife. I really liked that altimaster II. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  20. Quotewhat the f' is a bullet container? Check out this site...and the company hist. It's cool and Canadian http://www.agt.net/public/flyhigh/ ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  21. >Never even heard of clam shells. Never seen anyone use anything but 3-rings. I don't know if thats what the are really called, or if I could accurately describe the system. Two pieces of machined metal that hinge at the bottom" i think , saw them a long time ago" w/closing loop passing through drilled holes in both pieces at the top. normal cutaway handle and cables pulled through the loops, they un-hinge and fall apart . one half attached to riser and the other on the main lift web. never seen them sense. They looked very cool "square black box shaped things were your three rings go. only down side I could see to the system was the cost. Someone else must have seen these before? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  22. Thanks for the link Faber..I think! It would appear from what I read some openings could be very hard but not all the time. I try to search next time first. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  23. > because the canopy is free packed, rather than bagged, you get some initial de-celleration from having the whole canopy in the air for those brief moments before it starts inflating. Yea that makes perfect sense...and makes me feel better too! I love adrenalin but not crazy about pain. They offer a course up here w/supplied gear , starting with ballon jumps every now and again. I believe they direct bag you until you good enough for a short delay. Some day! Thanks...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  24. >I didn't look at my altimeter throughout the whole process, I just tried to do everything as quickly as I could. ========================== 3200' to 1200'...you could turn a style set! I got in trouble at 2000' and was at line stretch at 1200'. I also failed to chk my alti "chest mount which was in my left ear at the time" but looked at the ground and thought" Hell..I can skydive from here". I really had no choice " 2 people w/ no open canopies" but took the time to ask for permission. Later I asked how high was I when I choped it? My partner said 1650'. thats 450' cutaway to line stretch on a round no RSL. He gave me a little shit for not leaving him much room in the event he had to go to. When I left his main reinflated and my main detached from his. Don't ya just love CRW...never had another bad CRW jump after that. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  25. I'll say! but I'm not crazy about deploying from pack tray stows " can catch on reserve flaps, etc " or how the diaper is locked closed with 1 line group" uneven riser loading. "of course you know this stuff" I'm no rigger, nor do I have your experience so correct me were you see fit. But like I said...it always works for me! P.S. Rob and Penny say hi" or something of that nature". ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
