  1. ok thanks Faber, I was under the impression from him it would be painful every time! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  2. on my loads at 5500' those w/full face helmets put them on and the pilot gives me a dirty look wile opening his vent. They are all well aware what happens at 6000'. ummmmmmm....ice cold chilli for breakfast! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  3. Hello I'm a very experienced arm chair base jumper" I've seen it a thousand times on TV". I always thought... I would love to do that! So one day a visiting jumper shows up on my local DZ, gets checked out by the DZO and I show him around. We get talking and I find out he has 14 base jumps. Wow I'm all ears. He asks if I would like to see his base rig. YES where the hell is it! It's in the car, he says...I didn't know if it was ok to take it out here. I look at him like he had two heads! We go the the car and he pulls out a reactor "green" "w/fox or mojo don't remember we didn't unpack it". Now my eyes are as big as footballs. He explains how it is packed and used for different alt/delays etc. Now this guy is about 20 yrs and strong like bull. He tells me that 3 sec or less delay, slider off openings hurt like hell. I like 1000' snivels for my tired old bones. Are the openings really that rough? I would still like to try it some day " I would take a course" but don't like the idea of being pounded on opening! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  4. me bad too! How do we feel about hand deploy belly wart w/no pc? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  5. Wendy I think crapflinger is saying her would prefer a full diaper ,lines stowed on diaper only and so would I. Some day I'll upgrade. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  6. >I WILL say, I will never jump a sport rig with a two stow diaper... I understand completely...my rigger tells me every time he repacks my reserve...mike ya know you need to get some newer gear...but I know it works!!! P.S. reserves are round...if someone put a square were you reserve goes than you have 2 mains. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  7. Hi everyone, I have 2 Questions re: gear. I like a little CReW but am by no means an expert. 1 Do some of you do recreational CRW w/micro lines? " I thought I would be shunned for the thought by the pro's". 2 Does anyone use something other than 3 ring for main release ie: clam shells? thanks mike. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  8. Yes I agree...old does not make it good...but mine is air worthy so far! Bullet is like wonderhog sort of...the reserve is lopo 26 on 2 risers , 2 bite diaper, lines stowed in pack tray...ugly deployment possibilities, but I will exit at a grand any day and show ya how it works! P.S. when it opens you can hear it from miles away and I never have to search for free bag! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  9. I look at buying a rig just like buying a car. You can buy a new car with state of the art technology, shiny paint job, etc and get a block away only to have it towed back in because someone screwed up! If you buy a car with 300,000 miles on it...it must have served someone well! My rig uses technology so old that on a progressive DZ you would not find a rigger willing to pack the reserve or a DZO willing to risk letting you jump it. I bought it with 1500+ jumps on the rig and 1 one the reserve. I figured it would work for me! I have over 500 jumps on it now and 3 on the reserve" 2 with main in place". Trust comes with time and jumps. P.S. I not saying new rigs are not safe just less proven. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  10. I do want to think about what might have happened, because I jump with an RSL. Can someone complete this scenario? I might be visualizing this wrong, but I don't think rapid reserve deployment would have been a problem. Sure...not taking anything away from Skymamma who did exactly what she should have" and I hope she is taking up CRW"...The rsl should function as designed only to open the a reserve little faster. I do not use RSL's but have deployed my reserve wile not face to earth...I was low, spinning in a CRW entanglement "not a rap" and cut away sliding through the sky on my back rolled to my side and dumped" no burble". Now I continue the roll to face to earth and wait for line stretch. There is a difference between not being face to earth and unstable." ask those head down dudes/chicks". Furthermore unstable deployment at higher alt's is safer on average than getting to line stretch after impact. RSL's are not for everyone" or me" but they are cost effective life saving devices and it scares me to hear so many people with experience shooting them down in front of people with >100 jumps and no cutaways under their belts. p.s. I used to be one of them. too many people have died from low cutaways and no reserve pulls to discorrage the use of RSL's. Some with >4000 jumps. my $0.02 worth cdn. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  11. Cato Very nice web page! I was playing with the mouse java script thing" 2,4,8 canopy follows mouse". If you swing the mouse the right way with 4... you can get some rotations going. Cool pic's too! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  12. Hey JD Did they tell you what SST stands for? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  13. >...indicated to me that even experienced jumpers with spinning malfunctions would do well to have an RSL. Thats how I see it!!! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  14. > I suffered a partial inversion and burned dozens of holes in their T-10. Hee! Hee! Did you land that mal or cut it? If you landed it, can you see yorurself landing a minor malfunction under a square? ie: line over, steering line entanglement, etc. Frankly, I repack more round canopies for pilots than I do for skydivers. They must be safe or you would not pack them for the pilots. >My boss finally banned round reserves from Pitt Meadows last year. Exceptions will only be made for visiting jumpers who attend boogies at Pitt Meadows. Ok I can see not wanting to pack them anymore, and I can see not using them for students. But why would the dzo ban round reserves. I can only hope it is due to a dz hazzard "big river or something". If so why let visiting jumpers use round reserves? ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  15. >I would also like to know how you would react to a pilot chute in tow. I would wake up screaming in a cold sweat! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  16. Hi Billivon Just like to add some things... >QuoteThe debate often distills down to what kind of high speed mals you prefer - a PC in tow or a total. PC in tow...I'll chose a closed container and go for clear reserve deployment. >Pullouts can handle out-of-sequence deployments (i.e. pin coming out) more readily than throwouts. If the pin comes out, container opens, PC should be first thing out. That's not out of sequence. >Pullouts put more bulk inside the container. It's gotta go somewhere...and for the life of me, I could never understand why anyone would stuff their PC is an elastic sock on the outside of their rig. >Pullouts _can_ give you better protection against premature deployments due to fewer exposed deployment components; this depends on the rig. PC's slipping out of their sock" sorry pouch" does not appear to be as much an issue as it once was, but ZP PC are very slippery. Bottom line is we must protect our gear 100% of the time. I pack my pull-out system w/lots of tension on the pin and push it in deep" not half way". This means on every jump I have a hard pull!!! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  17. re: pilot chute entanglements... I don't have real crw gear so I had my bridle shortened...4'9". Just clears the burble for deployment and hides on top of the canopy when open. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  18. Hi Slink Keep your RSL and keep it functional unless you are doing CRW. Very experienced people have cutaway low or only cut away and would have been saved by an RSL. Do not be concerned about being stable when the RSL activates the reserve. When you cut away it's not that you are unstable, your just not face to earth...and that's ok. mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  19. > That is worth the $900 to me! Hell they could double the price and it would be worth it! Up here in Canada they do double the price! But your right...AAD's are a good idea. but thats a lotta beer money. Hell...when I win the loto, the first I'm gonna do is put my reserve on 4 risers! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  20. Hi Jay I'll bet you had a silly grin on your face for 3 days after that jump! ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  21. Kuper Enjoy the rush...you earned it! blue skies. ...mike ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  22. ------------------------------------------------------------ I'm from a small DZ in Canada. Here first jumps are made with no alti. (IAD) Reason: Chest mounts present a danger to chest area on bad face plant landings. wrist/hand mounts can get entangled in opening parachutes or impair use of emergency handles. Extra time would have to be spent teaching proper alti use. from first jump on ...we learn to count" develop time sense"and make visual references" eyeballing ". This is easy stuff to teach. alti use comes later"freefall more than 10sec". So no student can take up instrument flight until they prove themselves competent at VFR. That includes canopy control. What some call head down we call feet up! mike. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  23. Hi Don't think I would want to count on the Cypres when cutting away from 800'. I think the RSL is the answer for low cuttaways. Hope I'm never it that situation. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  24. Hi JD this happened to me twice...both times wearing gloves...I don't wear them anymore. P.S. You did the right thing...put the brakes on! 2 times is the rule. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
  25. 3 reserve rides in 500 jumps on lopo 26. second one was a cutaway from CRW at jump #109. cutaway at 1650' and line strech at 1250'...planing on landing bi-plane. It was my second CRW jump. ----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
