  1. Or those that jump through the winter anyway. It was -28C ( - 18 F) at exit altitude yesterday and +2C (35 F) on the ground. Please, all you Canadians keep quiet. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  2. I watched someone yesterday who decided to try a deliberate downwind landing. There was not much wind anyway and it seemed to be changing direction all the time. He did manage his final leg downwind but realized he was running out of landing area fast and aiming to go across a busy main road and into trees. He pulled off a perfect flat turn at about 50ft of the ground and managed to avoid the road. He was also someone who we talked out of downsizing to a crossfire 119 late last year when he had 450 jumps. I think he is now also glad he took our advice. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  3. This one is better!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGperYQxYL8&NR=1 You right, but the music on mine is better Makes you think about upsizing But still, if anyone wants a hot shot VX99, I am still willing to swop mine for a Spectre 135. Maybe the OP will give me his Crossfire 129 for the VX. After all the VX flies big. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  4. Spot the good canopy pilot in this short video. They all thought they were good and safe. Water can save lives. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  5. You want to buy a Velo with over 1000 jumps on it? I give it you for $1000 Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  6. I think it’s about time I start to down size again. I have currently over a 1000 jumps on a Velocity 90. I have also done a few jumps on a 78 Blade but that did not do really ring my bell. Therefore I have decided to skip the 58 nitro and goes straight to the VX 39 that Luigi jumps. After all the VX flies big and it can’t be that much more of a problem than the 58 Nitro. I will be careful on the first jumps, landing it straight in with no turns close to the ground. I looked at a number of posts here and it seems this sort of progression is standard practice. Any thoughts or helpful tips? BTW. I can do all of Billvons check list on my current canopy. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  7. OK. I#ll give it a shot. 1) Name (first and given) : Speedy 2) Are you married ? Living in a civil union ? In couple or single? Married 3) Do you have children? Yes 4) Do you work? What is your job? Sort of, program computers 5) How long have you been skydiving? Too long for it to be healthy 6) How many jumps do you have? Lots 7) How did you start skydiving? When I was 6 years old I saw some soldiers jump. I thought "I want to do that". So I wait 30 odds years and then enrolled on a course. 8) Why? That's what I ask myself all the time 9) How many times per year do you spend on a drop zone (approximatively)? Virtually all my free time. 10) Do you considers skydivers as being part of a community? Yes, A bunch of crazies 11) If yes, how did you feel you were part of this community? I believe I can fly 12) What do you consider being part of skydiving which is not part of the jump (the jump being briefing-jump-debriefing)? Drinking lots of beer 13) Do you consider parties at the drop zone as being part of the skydiving world? YesWhy? They involve drinking beer and falling down 14) What do you think about non-skydivers? I don't think about them 15) Have you already wanted to stop skydiving? Yes Why? I hate staying in hospital 16) What do you think about before and while jumping? I am going to die 17) Do you keep contact with your skydiver friends during winter? Yes Why? They are jumping, just like me 18) What were for you the most important moments in your skydiving life? Surviving the last jump 19) How do you think media represents skydiving? They don't Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  8. Then maybe you want to watch this video. Seems like Toyota has conned you. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  9. But my theory still is possible. You see, I don't believe the FBI or the USAF got the exit point (or rather exit window) wrong. I just think they never found him. Later and not long after the jump someone found a dead body with lots of money on it. They removed the money (and maybe buried the rest) and hid the money some distance from where they found Cooper. They were just waiting for the heat to cool off before going back for the money. Only problem was when they went back for the money it had been washed away by a storm. That's why they found the money near the river. This is the only way I can put the money where it was found. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  10. I would expect the money to have slightly less forward throw. Less weight and more air resistence per pound than a normal skydiver. If he loses the money during freefall, where the money lands is only affected by the time in the air. It would have the same trajectory as Cooper, but if Cooper did not pull it would drift further. If Cooper pulled it would land somewhere between the exit point and where Cooper landed (unless Cooper pulled at 300ft AGL). Which would be correct after about 10 seconds of freefall. The only thing you are missing is the forward throw. This would only make a difference of max 2000 ft from your original estimates. So you have two choices, a) the flight line/exit point are way off or b) Someone moved the money after it reached the ground. I am more for the someone moved it. I am sure the FBI/Airforce put a lot more effort than DZ.com trying to locate the exit point. Shame about the radar though. They probably never thought to look for Coopers echo. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  11. The forward throw from a 150 knot exit is about 1800 ft in the direction of flight. This is not the distance over the ground! But with 20 knot wind slightly from the left of the flight line it does not make much difference. The wind drift in a no pull situation is about 2300 ft. These are estimates, Kallend can do the real math. If you know the flight path then the area where he bounced is some what limited. I think that you (safecracking) already calculated that with an immediate pull he's only going to get max just over 4 miles drift with the canopy. Instant Opening: sink rate = 1000ft per min Time in air = about 9 mins forward throw in line of flight 1800 ft wind drift on canopy 0.41 miles per minute on a heading of 225° to 235° Looking at your maps there is no way the money that was found could end up there unless the exit point was significantly later than the BTG VOR marker. My guess is that the money got there by other means. Maybe someone found the money, they knew it was hot and stashed it somewhere and kept quiet. If you found 200k would you be willing to hand it back to the FBI. It was insured after all. So you carry it off and stash it some where and wait. and wait. Then come the floods Ckret mentioned and wash your little old hut away with the stash. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  12. On the map you just posted..... Where on the flight path do we think the pressure bump occured? Between A and B would be enough. Which direction are the winds blowing? At 10,000ft , 5000ft and the ground? I have heard 30 mph winds but are they the ground winds or winds at 10,000 ft. I assume you have positioned the map so the top is north. Maybe you could attach a kmz file so I could load it into google earth and get a feel for the distances myself. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  13. Safecracking : I think some of the stuff you posted in the post I am replying to are a bit off. Kallend (user name here on DZ.com), if he cares to take part, could provide a wealth of information about freefall dynamics of people, bags of money and even space balls. Just a few things I picked up on that I don't think are correct. >If the terminal velocity is 90m/s Is that 90 meters per second? No way would a bag of money fall at 90 m/s >I'm assuming no deceleration of horizontal speed and a full 10,000 foot drop. The forward throw/horizontal speed will decrease rapidly upon exit. The guy with the qualifications to work out where what landed depending on exit time is Kallend. With his knowledge and your info about the landscape you could probaly pin point the exit time. 14. How much does she owe you? And whats my cut Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  15. Well, I have jumped in sun glasses, I don't think they would have stayed on without a helmet though. Having jumped and had flapping things whip my face to a raw red mess, I can understand not wanting to jump with a tie. One thing that puzzles me is that even if he survived the jump, I don't see any reason to carry the rig and parachute out of the area with him. Why even bother to bury it? It's not like they could use the equipment to chase him. I believe that the rig and canopy is still somewhere in that area. As John Rich said, look for it. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  16. also, folding a piece of A4 paper in half, then in half again ... 42 times would result in the thickness of the paper also reaching the moon. 42 also just happens to be ...... Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  17. 3.. 2... 1.... SC Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  18. That really made me chuckle I just had this vision of someone in freefall over water, first chucking their helmet, then cursing because it went up instead of down Then they tried their camera, ooopps to late, damn Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  19. Your poll is a bit like "have you stopped beating your wife now?" What came first was forum users. The rest followed according the rules laid down by the person running the site. Looking at how the site has developed, it appears the owner has done a pretty good job. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  20. Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No experienced parachutist would have jumped in the pitch-black night, in the rain, with a 200 mile an hour wind in his face, wearing loafers & a trench coat. It was simply too risky. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No one jumps out of an airplane, it' s just too risky. There again, there are some that do. No one jumps with elliptical canopy's in the dark with only a 500W light bulb to guide them to the landing zone. There again, I did. The terrain was awful. He could not see that, maybe the plan was to jump a little earlier, or later. Sorry, but from my experience albeit limited, there are always skydivers that think they can do anything and get away with it. I can't say if he survived the jump, but sure as hell, an experienced skydiver would do the jump and learn the hard way. just my 2 cents (Euro cents that is) Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  21. It does not have to run out in order to jump to $500 a barrel. But, yes $500 / barrel is realistic very soon if demand out strips supply. What happens then? I dread to think. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  22. "Ghawar is dying." Could those three simple words signal the beginning of the end for the industrialized human civilization on Planet Earth? Read this and tell me what you think? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  23. Unfortunately they probably thought it was worth keeping the 30 buck, rather than protect their image. You know, sometimes the pax insists on taking the video. On the rare occaisions something has gone wrong I have had a really hard time explaining to the pax, "Here's you money back and no video". There was one guy who called me and asked for a new copy of his video 4 years later. I dug out the tape and watched one of my first Tandem videos. After sending his new copy I rang him up and told him if he ever jumps again, I will do his next video for free. These days, if I made a video like that, I would just claim the camera was not switched on and there is nothing on the tape. But for the pax, well it was him, skydiving and he wanted the video.
