Will youtube put people off Tandem jumps.
speedy replied to speedy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Quite right and you can't see wind on a video. I am in no way judging the TM or suggesting that this is common in Tandem jumps. I was just wondering if people might browse through youtube and find this stuff and then decide maybe they won't try a tandem. To those that posted that the landing looked fairly normal, all I can say is that we have either have damn good TM's at my DZ, or ..... I'll let you fill in the rest Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

I think after watching this video I would certainly be put off. http://youtube.com/watch?v=jiPoLzhX0w0 For the youtube challenged. Basically a Tandem does a god awful landing where I would put the chances of broken bones at 90%. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

You still need the batteries to store the power thought. I guess they don't come cheap. Mind you warm beer and a defrosted freezer is painful and expensive. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

[reply We are discussing CHANGES here - pay attention. Why should you have the monoply on changing the subject? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

If you don't sell your excess, how do you cope at night when the panels are not generating power? Do you have batteries to store the power from during the day? Or does the grid offset your overnight use against the extra you give back during the day? Here in Germany you would sell all the power from solar at 46 cents (euro) per Kwh. Your usage from the grid would be metered and I currently pay 17 cents (euro) per Kwh. So, if I install a 6 Kwp setup, I can nearly double my investment in 20 years and also generate twice as much electricity as I currently use. Not great investment, but certainly OK. The only problem is if the grid goes down it does not matter how much sun I have, I have no power. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Do you actually understand the concept of equilibrium? How about the Clausius-Clapeyron equation? Oh yes. Do you have any concept of percentages? I think you are reading more into my comments than what I am actually saying. That's the difference between an alarmist and a climate scientist. The climate scientist would just agree with me and say my comment is not in dispute. The alarmist has to scream, "don't you understand? we are all going to die" OK, so I guess it's the concept of feedback that you don't understand, since you are thoroughly familiar with the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. What the hell does feedback have to do with the composition of the atmosphere? You can keep changing the subject all you want, but the fact remains that water vapour is the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

"Hoax" you blind muppet, "Hoax". To have a hoax it must be perpetrated by hoaxers. You are calling GW a hoax, therefore you are calling GW climate scientists hoaxers, therefore you are labeling those climate scientists and attempting to stifle debate by calling them hoaxers. It's plain as fucking day. It is inconceivable that you don't get that? Human activities are pumping some 28 Billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. The mass of the Earth's atmosphere is approx 5 x 10^15 tons of which 0.03% (and rising) is CO2. So every year human activity is pumping into the atmosphere an additional 1.5% of CO2 above the existing level. WHAT AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE that this human activity should happen to coincide with the start of an unpredicted "natural cycle" of planetary warming. It amazes me how some people ignore that fact that the most common greenhouse in the atmosphere is water vapour. Who is ignoring it? You In another thread where I corrected a statement that said CO2 was the most abundant greenhouse gas, you went of at a tangent talking about equilibrium. So I assumed you had a quibble about my correction. Do you actually understand the concept of equilibrium? How about the Clausius-Clapeyron equation? Oh yes. Do you have any concept of percentages? I think you are reading more into my comments than what I am actually saying. That's the difference between an alarmist and a climate scientist. With respect, I don't think this is the case. I consider a stall is when the wing no longer generates any lift and collapses. I witness many landings where the pilot has both feet on the ground and forgets that the canopy is still flying. This results in falling over backwards and being dragged along the ground with people yelling at them to pull in a steering line. Another case is where the pilot lands and the canopy continues to fly forwards and lands in front of the pilot. The canopy has not stalled. Maybe I am just nit picking, but I believe there is a big difference between stalling the canopy and flaring for a nice soft landing. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Saw a video of a Tandem Atmo jump yesterday. No drogue but two other jumpers (in Atmo mode) had no problem keeping up with the fall rate. When the drogue was eventually deployed you noticed how it braked their forward speed considerably. Was this a Tandem falling at 80 mph (vertical) without drogue? GPS data would be interesting indeed. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

If this is the case, then maybe the choice of the reserve instead of the sport chute makes sense. If you intend on going out very low, you want some thing that is going to open reliably. Or is this assumption invalid with the equipment used at the time. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Do you mean, "sell the rest to the grid"? Or do you really give the excess away for free? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I thought the Argos bouys wern't showing any ocean warming since they were deployed. SST and to a depth to 3000 meters. Nothing being warmed up so what's with volcanos? The guy is obviously taking out of his a**** Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

The most common greenhouse is water vapour, not carbon dioxide. Absolutely!! Perhaps the most Dangerous substance on earth. I can believe that we have not yet Banned Dihydrogen Monoxide. See www.DHMO.org for more information on this Horrible substance that also helping to create Global Warming. Save the Earth!! Kill Cows and Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide! I can't believe that there are people who can't tell the difference between equilibrium and displacing an equilibrium in an undesirable direction. Oh, sorry, then I guess you must be right, there is more CO2 in the atmosphere than water vapour. How could I be so stupid. Thank you for confirming my statement. Thank you for confirming my suspicion that you never read the posts that you reply to. Maybe this will help you in learning which are the most abundant gasses in our atmosphere. http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/7a.html or maybe you want to edit this Wiki article, because they also seem to disagree with you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth's_atmosphere Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

With just 2 jumps yes (depends on where you are jumping), with 10 jumps it is maybe less of a problem. The best thing is to go to the DZ and check it out with your instructors. Hey, you need to spend time to collect the experience. Some of this time is spent on the ground waiting for the right conditions at the DZ. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Crossbrace canopies and violent spinning malfunctions
speedy replied to TheSecret's topic in Safety and Training
While not having the experience of the others that have answered, I would say that the key is knowing what you are jumping. I have enough openings on my canopy to say as soon as things start to go wrong, chop it. I trust my reserve and on the type of canopy I jump I am not prepared to fight anything for too long. Line twists I will give about 5 seconds to see positive results, otherwise I chop. Spinning on my back, I chop. Can a violent malfunction be instantly so fast ( withing a few seconds) that you have problems reaching the handles? BTW Jumping a Xaos 21 is not considered normal. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
