  1. I've tried a couple of times now to install uBuntu Linux v6.06 on my old HP laptop...no luck. I downloaded the disk image and burned it to CD (using my Mac). It's a LiveCD so I put it in the CD drive and restarted from WIN98. The LiveCD starts doing its thing but it takes well over an hour before I get to the point that the menus and desktop, etc shows up. (During this time I sometimes have a text msg on the display and the CD drive is spinning away and the hard drive as well....but not much ever seems to be happening.) Then, I doubleclicked on the "Install" icon...more spinning of drives for a long time....eventually a window came up with "Install" in the the title bar.....and eventually everything stopped. It was just sitting there doing nothing for a long time...I eventually unplugged it and pulled the battery out. WIN98 started again ok...so nothing appears to have been installed. This HP 2100 laptop is a Pentium 233...a pentium, not a II or III or 4...with a 6bg HD and 160mb of Ram...tha max ram that can be installed. Should I be partitioning the drive before I put in the CD so that there is free space available? Or what????? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  2. I'm using Index/Match to look up a foreign exchange rate for a certain date...the date and FX rates are in two columns. How can I set things up so that the Index/Match formula refers to another cell that has a date typed into it and uses that date to do the lookup. I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this without editing the date in the formula itself. 3. As Brook points out in the post above, the new generation of Macs with Intel processors are very capable machines. Year before last I edited our club's year end video on my 800 mhz G4 iMac and a 1ghz iBook. Obviously slower when rendering, etc....but they performed like champions. For ordinary DV I can only imagine the MacBooks, MacBook Pros and Intel iMacs totally rock! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  4. Before you convert the RAW images to anything else you might want to learn a bit more about them....my head is hurting since I got my new Nikon D70S and had to start learning about RAW. The ability to adjust for shadows, highlights and midtones before converting to another format is very incredible. I have the Adobe Camera Raw and it is very neat to play with the sliders to see how much shadow detail there is and then play with the highlights...it's like being able to burn in and dodge in film terms and is important that you do that before converting to another file format which will do its own adjustments that you have no control over. I know that there are many on here that can explain this better or point you to good information sources. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  5. First, I quit drinking on November 3, 1980. Then, three years later I quit smoking cold turkey on May 3, 1983. I smoked for 16 years, pack + per day. I tried many times to quit over the years but what motivated me to quit was sitting in a restaurant in ZHills across from an old dude who had a tracheotomy and had to use one of those buzzer boxes that he held up to the hole in his throat to talk. By that time I was coughing and shit from smoking and this freaked me out so badly that I quit for good a few months after that trip. That sound is stil in my head. I don't think I'd ever have quit if I hadn't quit alcohol as well...but that's just me. Good luck and never quit trying to quit....it will be one the best things you ever do for yourself. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  6. So, here's my suggestion.....for punishment, shave him like a little "Girlie Dog" and see how he likes it......see attached photo of our cat, His Formerly Royal Fluffiness Froedrich von Vomit Frickleschnits aka Fred. That should eliminate the hairball coughing episodes for a while -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  7. It shoots RAW in Nikon NEF format. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  8. I scan VT daily for new releases. It's a great resource. As I type this I am downloading 454 mb of Photoshop Elements 4 from the Adobe on-line store. I think it will do what I need...which isn't too much as I don't have the time to devote to properly learning Photoshop et al....but it's going to be nice having the higher res files that permit far more latitude in producing a better image. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  9. Awesome game. One of the wildest Cup final games I've ever seen. Unfortunately for those cheering for Edmonton Roloson is out for the rest of the series. I don't know why but just saw McTavish make the announcement. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  10. I look at this as the "fruits" of our policy of multiculturalism. Immigrants and their kids don't become Canadians...they are something else first. It is also a problem with our immigration policies. Why let people in to our country if they are from backgrounds that will never allow them to assimilate and indeed want to change everybody else to thjeir way of thinking? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  11. A smart playlist in iTunes would allow you to get all artists starting with "T" quite easily. To avoid getting every band with "The" in their name you add another condition that the Artist does not contain "the". I have an old iPod (2nd gen) so don't know if this would help you when using a remote. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  12. And I thank you too. Will soon let you know how it works for me...I'm just charging the battery for my new camera!!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  13. I am so-o-o-o close to heading out and buying a Nikon D70S it isn't even funny. (It's just a matter of if, not which camera I get) But..... I want to do lots of nature, landscape and portrait photography and use RAW for that type of shooting. Has anybody on here used iPhoto or Photoshop Elements to work with RAW files? Has anybody done this on an older Mac? 15. Here's how you can do that...... Get Info for the song you wish to trim, click on "Options" check the Start Time and/or Stop Time check boxes and then enter the values needed to eliminate the unwanted parts. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Agreed....I had to take some BJJ lessons to appreciate what is going on when MMA fighters are on the ground....and if they are good grapplers, there's a lot going on even though it doesn't look like they are doing very much. I haven't seen too much PRIDE but the ones I've seen tend to allow the fighters to stay on the ground even if not too much is happening. I prefer that to having them stood up right away...as I think the UFC is doing that too quickly in the interests of entertainment. I was surprised to hear it was over so quickly and the descriptions I've seen say it was pretty one-sided. Somewhat sad to see a legend go out on such a note....but that's what happens when you stay too long at the party. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  18. In the 1996 disastrous Everest Season, Beck Weathers was rescued from Camp 2...above 22,000 feet. Click on the helicopter rescue link on this page and it will tell you that Beck's rescue was the second highest. So, to rescue this fellow from near the top of Everest would seem to me to require a descent of over 7,000 feet to make it possible. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  19. Thanks to Gareth Holder, who loaned me his Dactyl manual, a digital copy is available to anybody that wants one. I scanned Gareth's manual and then assembled the scans in a pdf file. It is a fairly large file...24mb...so until I place it on a server somewhere, the easiest way to get it to people is by instant messaging it. My AOL IM ID is murray.work@mac.com I'm online most of the time during the day at work so shoot me a message and I'll transfer you the pdf file. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  20. The Unofficial Apple Weblog (tuaw.com) posted this article regarding testing done on the MacBook by Creative Mac using FCP and other FCS apps. It appears to hold up pretty well...performs at least as well as a dual G5 Powermac! Some of the comments are pretty interesting. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  21. I am sure the others were not planning to wrap up and die either, but they still did. Thanks for the lecture Ron...you're 20 years too late btw..... You can wrap up and die anytime you attempt CRW. Or anytime you skydive for that matter. Not many people who die in this sport plan on it. We both know that. We very carefully did a beautiful no-momentum dock...unlike the people that died several years later....and it wasn't adrenaline inducing in any way. Late summer evening cruising around in a 2 stack with 2 friends...it was good times. We had well over 100 2 stacks with him pinning me and we weren't going to dock unless it was perfect. We weren't about to overamp..we were very aware of the nastiness that could ensue if we were less than perfect...if we got it, we got it. It wasn't a big deal. To put my point of view into context...It was nowhere near dangerous compared to a lot of shit we used to do back then...docking sub 1500 feet after RW...breaking off downplanes under 100'...pulling at 1500' on a regular basis, etc, etc. (Or doing crw - including a downplane - on our reserves after a double intentional cutaway...still my favourite jump) When Rob says "The things we got away with"...those were the things we got away with back then, this was mild in comparison. 22. I just found out about this Apple document that says that the MacBook is not suitable to use with Final Cut Studio...due to the integrated video. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  23. Good man James!!! If you're ever out Saskatoon way I have a Dactyl, 7TU C9 and a ParaCommander. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  24. Rob, This wasn't a big deal at the time..we had done lots of crw together and we did a beautiful gentle dock. Thanks for the story of the tandem crw fatality...I was pretty sure there had been one that resulted in the ban but couldn't remember any details at all. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure we got the idea after seeing a photo of tandem crw in Skydiving Magazine. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that Bill Booth was one of the participants. (Bill's done a lot of "interesting" tandem jumps ) -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  25. I believe it is now a forbidden activity but back before that happened I did a 2-stack with a buddy who had his wife as a passenger. (This was in 1985 I believe...pre-drogue) She was also a skydiver. They docked on me...we figured that if it went to shit they could cutaway. A tandem getting wrapped would be a very ugly thing. --->>>Edited to attach a picture of the jump...sorry for the quality... And to say that one of the photos I took was used as a cover shot for CanPara (CSPA's mag) and it caused quite an uproar....because the tandem pair wasn't wearing head gear...not becasue doing CRW on a tandem might be a bit hazardous -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
