strange, I cancelled our slot at the windtunnel in Orlando tonite so I could stay at home in sarasota, since the prediction for landfall was nearby. Now it appears that Orlando got hit by charley much harder than us!! We only got a steady rain all day, lite drizzles and the sun even poked out as it went down over the gulf beach nearby. The electricity actually went out AFTER the heavy rains ended, but only for TWO hours...I figured they wouldn't fix ours for a long time because over 500,000 people had no power in ft myers + portcharlotte areas. The eye went inland from pt charlotte harbor, then north towards lake wales, orlando..... passing through the little town Arcadia around 40 miles east of us, leaving few buildings untouched. TV now says that not a single road is passable anywhere in DeSoto county to our east. wow! Emergency Services in Pt Charlotte actually lost their roof!!TV is now showing footage of that area. Lots of people retire to Florida, and live in trailers. Of course those all were destroyed. A car was upside down next to what this morning were 4 or 5 trailers... With all the computer models for predicting storm tracks, those events have a life of their own and go where they please..... PS TV keeps showing more! Because the storm dropped so much water inland, instead of flooding earlier, major rivers feeding into portcharlotte and manatee areas will by 8am tomorrow have a flood level of 18 FEET, SIX FEET ABOVE the what they consider Flood Level.....

Its now hitting port charlotte at 145mph....and since it is heading onto land, the worst of the strorm surge flooding may not happen. But the winds are still picking up! yeah galen, channel 7 is pretty good info....they just mentioned some guy died on clark road not far from me.....he was driving and swerved to miss a falling tree and hit something. we have been told repeatedly from local govt NOT TO travel for the next few hours..that guy shouldn't have been driving anywhere! best of luck and stay dry everyone! mp

charley just got boosted to a category 4! winds at 10K are 165mph!! the eye is now heading to port charlotte harbor to the south....not good news for them, but the storm surge there will damage much less than if the eye passed over the heavily populated tampa bay.... more later! stay dry everyone!

Any more rumors I need to put to bed for certain people? ***hey buddy, siesta key got shut down at midnite. as did longboat and all other barrier islands in sarasota county. I work for the county bro....maybe it didn't happen up by you, but it was not a rumor here. water got turned off at 6am. marc EDITED AT 12:30pm: just announced that the bridges in Pinellas County (st pete and clearwater) leading to the islands were shut down at 11am. All power and water is now being shut off for those barrier islands. Tuna, if you live on one of those islands, I hope you and dagny got out of there!

charley is chewing through havana and doesn't stop growing. it is category 3 now.... 1 million people in the evacuation between key west to the south up the west coast of Florida to north of st pete/clearwater, etc. the bridges will close down at midnite, no one enters. water service will be shut down before dawn. hotels/motels east past bartow and lake wales are full. only the premium priced gas is left and running out fast. when the winds reach 45 mph, all emergency vehicles get off the roads for the duration, until things calm down for the disaster recovery... time to settle in folks...at 110mph ++, that garbage can down the block can be flying at wind tunnel speeds! . ps....we are 2km from the beach....as close as you can imagine and still be out of the official cat 1-3 flood zones....

get a professional! there are two kinds of termites here, one type lives outside and comes in to munch, the other lives full time in the wood. we have a terminex system around our house. its a bunch of bait sticks that the pro checks out every few months. it only works for the ones that live outside. if the pro finds termites chewing away on the bait, he replaces it with poisons.... they just move somewhere else and after a while they come back and the process is repeated forever! the ones that live in wood means tenting the entire house and spraying inside.....yuch!

i have my 2 kayaks ready...not that I will want to go anywhere in that mess...even with a 'normal storm' last september, we were kayaking down our street! back in the 80's in denver, we got so much snow over christmas eve that the 10 of us at the christmas party got snowed in for a few days....it got to the point we had to make turkey soup from the leftover bones....didn't devolve to the point of cannibalism though....then when some stores opened, we crosscountry skied to the liquor store and stocked up... wow, this post even woke up the sleeping jraf! they are evacuating the barrier islands now. the bridges will be closed off at midnite tonite. They announced that when the winds get above 45mph, even the emergency vehicles will stay off the roads, because of flooding, trees and power lines blocking roads. And this one is already at category 2, and getting stronger! no batteries to be found anywhere. home depot and hardware stores doing great business today! I stocked up on candles, canned foods, dried fruit, beef jerky, peanut butter and jelly, and lots of goodies like chips, chocolates, junky magazines to read.... last storm anywhere near this size was 100 miles off the coast, and it still had winds strong enuf to blow the solar panels off my roof!! wow, time to pray to the storm gods! stay dry everyone! marc ps alysse is bummed that she won't be in the tunnel tomorrow. but with storm winds that may equal the tunnel's, maybe she can still practice while hanging onto the flagpole!

15 Top Dreams----how many of these have YOU dreamt?
marcandalysse replied to marcandalysse's topic in The Bonfire
That reminded me about an animated movie called 'Waking Life'. Not everyone will enjoy it, there's a lot of philosophical mumbo jumbo...but a variety of animators worked on it so the graphics are a trip, and there are some interesting discussions.... heheheh.....life is but a dream? (at 4pm still in the office, i am falling asleep!) -
15 Top Dreams----how many of these have YOU dreamt?
marcandalysse replied to marcandalysse's topic in The Bonfire
Alysse always had the dream of floating out of her bed and into the sky, where she would fly around above it all. When she did her first tandem, she realized that she could live her dream. I lived in the mountains, and I often had a dream where I was climbing up a mountain, grabbed a handhold, and slipped off it, plunging to the ground. I always woke up before the 'splat' though.... But one dream that still pops up so many years after graduating college is that I am being told by some college admin that I haven't graduated yet and that I still need to turn in some research paper or take one more final! Amazing how that school shit stays with you! Do you have any of the dreams on this list over and over? -
