What does the association's political position have to do with how doctors advise their patients? seriously? the position explicitly instructs the doctors to the extent, nature, and purpose of said advise When it comes to medical advise, I am more concerned with the doctor's knowledge and ability than his association's political views. agreed Reminding parents with guns to think about how they store their weapons is just some common courtesy. Most will have already thought of that. Some will tell the doctor to fuck off. A few may have forgotton to think about that in the excitement of welcoming a baby into the family. agreed For a country where you have the right to own guns, you guys sure are uptight about them. your missing the point in your zeal to bad mouth the country - It's more likely the reason for the (recall I said 'over reaction') proposal is likely a concern over the base intent of organizations that move beyond the medical treatment and want to advocate for political policy I have no issue with the doctor trying to bring it up. However: 1 - I can say it's not a topic of discussion don't waste your valuable time. 2 - I don't really want a record of my property right now, I do worry about self righteous assholes that want to take away my property or control my life (both extreme liberal fanatics AND extreme religious rightwingers). Frankly, reading posts in Speaker's Corner has really biased that viewpoint even more. It's concrete proof that there is a small percentage of people out there that truly do want to totally infringe on my rights, and do want to take my property. And you don't know who is who. 3 - I seriously question the ability of any random MD to be qualified to advise me or anyone that is actually a firearms owner, about gun safety considering my history growing up. Now if I know the guy like my own doctor, maybe we shoot together, etc. But if it's just a typical office visit with someone I don't know at all? I doubt his medical residency had a class on gun safety. I have to assume that anyone that is a member of the AAP, and reading this policy statement below, that it's just as likely as not, that the doctor in front of me has zero clue, and zero practical experience in firearms ownership - I don't want him teaching it wrong. And a very biased socio/political position on the subject in general. Perhaps, we're are sitting in front of the 1 in 10, or 1 in 100, whatever, of an AAP member that is fanatical about it even. And, in general - one HUGE aspect of gun safety in today's world is pretty much not letting ANYONE know you own guns or have them in the house. Let alone an entire staff of strangers. ... Source? no, "a concern" (no kidding) But look at Shotguns post. The AAP vision is to remove guns from households. for the children you know how fanatical the 'other side' is about their issues and you wouldn't trust them with your wallet. Guess what, both sides have that level of fanatics..... ... I think many approach these discussions with the attitude that everybody else is stupid and does need to be protected from themselves. It's sad really. I like your post - agree wholeheartedly. . . . But then you see Shotgun's post on the AAP political position on the specific topic of guns. And then we wonder why distrust is being sown? But then....we see a complete over reaction in a legislative bill to gag MDs. And our confidence in the stupidity of others is re-affirmed ... agree - that a friendly relationship with our docs is great. That's why we don't need the government getting between us. I believe the distrust isn't with the doctors, it's with the politicians that are trying to exert influence over that doctor and I'm not surprised by the irony - when you realize that both sides are doing it (trying to force their issues into the private relationship - if one side wants to gag order the doc, the other side wants the doc to ask everybody and give the info to the government for a defacto registration). ... really? and if the patient was too shy and refused to answer either way, The MD could still recommend condom usage Questions to find a diagnosis is fine. Questions that just probe in order to give life style advice are certainly subjective as to whether they are needed, since the advice is likely not conditional upon the answer. I don't like regulations that force the questions. I also don't like regulations that are gag orders. Let the docs ask questions, but let the parents be able to draw a line for when the doc crosses it - without either being worried about being refuse care or the ability to practice. ... see, now "prohibited discrimination" can be subjectively defined in any way that legislatures or to AMA can choose to define it. look, the AAP advising that their advocates increase their span of responsibility is interesting, but just an extension of the same argument - seat belts - why is the doctor so amazingly qualified? they aren't seat belt designers, safety test engineers, etc etc etc. I know a lot of doctors that like to "think and act" they are experts on everything, but.... again, they can discuss anything they like without having to take inventory of one's possessions. ... that's in interesting one that might apply better....good to think on. I'd suspect knowing that would be something that's legally required as a law enforcement reporting item, but not for medical treatment. I'd say only after a positive diagnosis of acute depression (that pesky innocent until proven thing getting in the way), then I could make arguments for that....especially for a psychiatrist, not as clear cut for an MD - IMHO But wouldn't it be more analogous to Cholesterol issues - the doctor should advise the patient to keep bad foods out of the house - he isn't really obligated to ask how many boxes of Ding Dongs are in the house. A psychiatrist can direct the patient to remove weapons to a friend's house without having to know the specifics. And if there's a criminal concern, ...... tougher what do you think? I am going to take the Ding Dong analogy to the Child's office visit - Symptoms, the kid has chronic stomach issues, blood test consistently shows high sugar levels, etc etc - Dr is probing (for the sake of the diagnosis) - "do you have a lot of sweets in the house" "YES (smile)" - Dr calls parent into the office to advise on keeping sweets out of reach of the child and how much is OK vs too much.....That works for me. See......just not having a law about it either way makes sense to me and Parents should be in the room anyway and decide if some of the questions do cross the line. ... this one, again, why is that medically related? the first time, law requires gunshot wounds to be reported to the police - THEY are the ones to investigate under law not a doctor, or the postman, or the dentist, or the carpet layer I'm reaching for ANY medical reason for that question - Maybe the doctor is a freaking Sherlock Holmes and will be able to tell the exact temperature of a powder burn and thus the correct salve to use if he knows the type of ammo....just so he can keep it in stock for "next time" I think your other questions make a lot of sense. ... The point is that it's probably redundant. Any reasonable healthcare service should already have general regulations covering such instances instead of needing a specific provisions for any object you could care to name. Otherwise you'd end up with a countless number of [Insert Item] Owners' Privacy Acts. Unless you agree with a doctor being able to refuse treatment if a patient refuses to answer questions about what brand of refridgerator they use? Learn to read, Rush. It'll make all our lives easier. just beat me to it. Rush - Jakee said a cop can ask me anything he wants. no kidding. You answered the question about me answering those questions. "him asking" doesn't equal "me answering" that's a Kallend tactic - He says "WRONG" and then proceeds to agree with you. that's the position most here are taking - 1 - what a stupid law 2 - yet agree with the idea that doctors should mind their own business the rest can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that most people can simultaneously advocate #2 yet still have the #1 opinion......these people typically like to think that any opinion they have deserves legislation to force on others......and then project that on everyone else. ceiling injuries - if that pilot chute comes out, and that parachute jumps straight up through the roof like in the movies, a kid could get pulled up with it if a doctor doesn't tell our kids not to pull the string, who will? WHO WILL? (see what I did there? non-gun owners know about as much about guns as non-skydivers know about gear. And, it doesn't matter if there are accidents on record or not, if the public gets scared by the anti-parachute lobby, then the vote buyers will 'do something'.....for the children. i'm good with this - but it does depend on what and how the doctor gives advice in each scenario - but if we make it required, or illegal, eventually laws will be passed defining to the doctor his script. that's another reason not to pass laws that require, or forbid simple discussion...... I like your 2nd paragraph just fine, but why the doctor? - big brother can just mail the pamphlets to each citizen, or they can be handed out on election day, etc etc etc ... you can be so snarky apparently you didn't read the opinions of most of us that a law restricting his ability to ask is silly - that families should be able to just refuse to answer nonsense questions like this if they like. Leave it to you to take general agreement and pretend it's an opposing debate. apparently you are unable to extend the idea that questions about personal property are just that and could apply to anything. leave it you to you be be completely blind to the overall argument when it's one of your pet issues you are making it very difficult to avoid the impression that you would absolutely love the idea of a Dept of Home Safety just like I wrote out (good thing I know you better) ... Perhaps you'll provide links to some instances of children finding improperly packed parachutes in the house and killing themselves or someone else with it. Then you MIGHT have a point. meh, cars, knives, surgical saws, fertilizers, swimming pools whatever you like. Perhaps the parent might be the right person to talk about those things? "So, how many scissors do your parents own?" "where are they? can you get at them?" "how do you hold them when taking them from room to room? "let's talk about running with scissors" Wouldn't it just be easier if everyone just listed all their property on a public google site? Then, it's easy for the Secretary of Home Safety to send out fleets of government Safety Counselors to each home to lecture all of us on how to live our lives. Perhaps they can assess each home and confiscate (normally legal) property that we clearly are not allowed to own. We could then auction off that property to fund the Dept of Home Safety. They could also inspect our light bulbs too while there. Perhaps bubble wrap furniture etc as needed. It's a win win For the children ...
