  1. so every response so far is pretty much in agreement main theme "this show of disrespect for another group's beliefs sucks" and the slight theme of "this wouldn't be an issue if we'd just keep that crap out of politics in the first place and leave it to more personal private arenas" (the irony of, especially, the 1st point, vs what I might suspect is the OP's motivation to post this is interesting but there's irony in the 2nd point too and even some irony in the 2nd point when considered against the 1st point. you guys ROCK) ... 2. What are Canada's requirements for illegal immigration? Is your country also driving that demand for "cheap products from the US" (odd statement there isn't it?) good questions though - I guess it would be 'more' self balancing if the world market was 'free' (er). But when everyone has different rules, then an experiment on a more free market would have to be bounded. A large nation seems to be a good boundary to experiment with it - since they can't choose the rules for other countries..... that's an odd and baiting statement - I think the government would be getting 'blamed' for not enforcing the law, and also now rationalizing the lack of enforcement by changing the rules. I suspect the citizenry/market (not just US, but anyone that buys certain products that come from illegal labor) would be blamed for not abstaining from purchases seriously, though, you can tangent this to a free market vs social utopia debate if you like, but I just wonder about all the other countries' rules and if any other nation even considers acting like our messed up one - that and the hypocrisy of calling us out when they have even more restrictive rules and then exploit our situation too ... 3. Just a comment - I won't venture an opinion on the amnesty until I observe the economy and society for a couple years now that it's happened (no conclusions without data, only theories - personally I have a few - some lead to this being a terrible thing, some others have some positives - I'm not sure which hold more weight yet. I have a visceral reaction to not following the law though....so I have to watch how that colors my opinions....) Bold mine (in retrospect, your entire post) - say that as an American about the US and you'll get totally driven out of town and tar and feathered - and much of the time by people from countries with immigration rules that you'd think would be sympathetic the short of it is that most all developed countries have standards and rules for immigrating legally - but it seems only the US gets bashed on trying to do the same (or do I just not hear about the others?) OMG, and "english speaking" what an incredibly intolerant and racist position - is what many would claim so why is it ok for just about every country to set rules and enforce them, but the US is evil incarnate to even talk about doing the same? ... 4. you can do a search on the topic too - I think there are another 3 or 4 threads on this. pretty much the same stuff - some discussions fleshed out a bit on why certain formations make more sense than others ... 6. is a very handy and antiquated technique - both are correct (and in freeflying, the old sit suits did a great job, at the cost of more advanced skills and sometimes healthy shoulder joints.... ) it works really nice, much like using a sledgehammer to crack an egg. but while you are standing on roller skates. (it simply spreads the body out too much and removes usable range of motion - yes it works and is easy to teach and learn. But wouldn't it be nicer to be able to make the same translation with a tight and more manuverable technique? I think so.) ... 7. I have the same experience here as Skydivesg when teaching mantis camps in the tunnel. The technique does translate to teaching it anywhere and worth teaching right the first time. One other modification (in addition to the added forearm 'paddling' input already mentioned) that helps some to 'get it' is to use the hips a bit - hip bump (or hulu bump) in the direction of the slide - it helps trigger the correct leg and arm movements as a single thought, rather than two thoughts. pretty easy to train with low timers, a lot harder to train for people with a lot of jumps and bad habits ... 9. ^^^^^^ I don't like generalized assessments one single bit. ( my one exception is that someone that "used" to jump and then took a long layoff - will be a pain in the ass to teach. they'll do fine, but it'll likely be difficult) any age, any education, any scenario, the INDIVIDUAL should take a first jump course if they are interested. A 'good' instructor 'should' be able to assess that individual and make a call if they are so bad they might be a problem. Unless they are ridiculously incompetent and I've tried 1 on 1 'extra' training and even tried a different instructor too (first default, an 'untrainable' student is MY fault as an instructor - I keep trying), they'll always get a Cat A. everything good or bad I've read here as examples I've seen across the entire spectrum of age - most of the 'poor' performance examples I see attributable to age, I see much worse in males in their early 20's aging, etc manifests itself so differently, that I can't just put a line in the sand - I need to observe the individual...period ... 10. Look around the DZ. We'd be winning in many places if we kept pace with the fitness of baseball pitchers, car racers, perhaps bowlers and many golfers. Yes, I do take exception with the word 'sport' for skydiving - same as the above list. but that's "is" vs "should" (I'd prefer my students show up fit. But I prefer everyone on the planet take health and fitness seriously, didn't stink of cigarettes and coffee, etc. But that's a losing battle also.) No matter what the activity, health and fitness and flexibility is a benefit. Skydiving disciplines are no exceptions. ... 18. so the movie comes out and this happens NFL game has deflated balls, so congress wants to pass a law there etc etc etc the quote should be "Shameless politician sees that a current Hollywood film is attracting a ton of attention and makes a big gesture to ingratiate himself to mindless movie goers" being the subject of a movie shouldn't be rationalization for the MOH if his actions warranted it, it shouldn't take a movie to get the works in motion if that's what it takes, then it's another symptom of a failed social and political system Freakin' pols and half the populace probably even think that Kyle = Bradley Cooper for that matter. I'd like to test that with the politician with a line up of ten pictures and see if he could pick out Kyle without help from a popularity poll and 3 assistants ... 19. I agree with that also - though I'd say 'powerful/influential' instead of wealthy. And I'd caviat that your 'wealthy' is not restricted to any party and that neither party has a philosophy to restrict/fix the situation. Or, if I were to set aside my natural cynicism for a moment - I could say both parties have different philosophies on what is necessary to fix the situation - and both are so incompetent at it that their efforts just result in making it worse, not better. (sorry, I guess both options are cynical, one just assumes devious intentions up front, the other assumes good intentions combined with incompetence and total lack of understanding of long term cause and effect...... Thus the birth of the two party system?) ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  20. So you quote "should be the same thing" CAN HAVE a lot of undermeaning worth consideration... (But I understand what you are saying and agree with the post overall) So I'll digress....It kind of depends on how you think of "the people" the people - individuals with unique positions and capabilities, the right to own property, and able to choose where and how to contract with others of the same the people - thought of as a generalized collective, or society as a whole and singular entity I think both are true to some extent, but the focus on which end of the spectrum a person envisions really does drive how a person looks at resources and governance. It 'should be' a tricky balance - not an all or nothing type of debate...but it never is ... 25. And a few less social programs, healthcare, etc...reductions in spending needs to happen across the entire budget, just not the spending you don't happen to agree with. when spending less comes up, some of the guys here have a prejudice/stereotype that the person wanting reduced spending is a pro-military cliche. So they put forth examples of cut they assume will 'hurt' the other person's position. They they reply - "absolutely, but cut other stuff too". over and over and over again. seems to me that lately, most people here that talk about reduced spending want it across-the-board. Not one sided at all. so they don't fit that stereotype. Only the hard lefties seem to stay in the stereotype (and only the really partisan members) want to reduce military only.....but that's not a reduction, they just want that money moved to their pet projects. example - "if we didn't spend billions on a war, we could have spent it (my pet projects)" = money is the governments I prefer - "if we didn't spend billions on a war, we wouldn't have spent billions (or we could have paid down our debt)" = money is the people's The attempt to frame spending cuts as 'us vs them' is a waste of energy here and just trolling in the form of "my overspending is more important than your overspending". I'd rather join forces with "spend less". ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
