Maybe only for really old people - I understand after a century or two, only portions of the lungs remain, and that part is mostly just system support for getting from the $3 brunch buffets at Denny's to one's afternoon nap. PADI might discriminate. That capacity might be a concern for PADI. (seriously, they do ask for a doctor's release for people with any conditions from a specific list of health items....asthma for example. with john's life experiences, he's likely recovered from more things than many of us have had) In the meantime, I'll sit in envy of those friends diving in warm reef wall areas full of cool marine life ... that's a shame about the cuff tear. Hopefully it wasn't the exits the tore it? I coach for OC's to take a left grip EVERY time it is even remotely possible - It's just better leverage against the wind. Still, it's easy to miss things like point or IC being late, or tail not getting low enough - ANY of these can really mess up OC's presentation. But it's SO great when all 4 finally get in sync. It just changes from this athletic effort of 4 individuals, to more like one person just exhaling after big calm breath Good luck with it. OC is my primary slot though I've trained in all of them, it's a lot of fun. ... Missouri to execute old man missing part of his brain

I find life in prison to be much more vengeance focused and bloodthirsty. It seems crueler IMO. But either way, we are "taking away someone's life" for the express purpose of protecting the rest of society. So I get conflicted when we talk about a different standard to declare guilty when DP is on the line. And I've argued that we need a very strong standard for the DP, but wouldn't it be the same for a Life sentence regardless? Perhaps one option is this. Once declared guilty by our strong standards for the type of crimes that would dictate DP or Life Imprisonment, it should be an option for the guilty party to choose, rather than dictated by society. Either way, we protect society (our only real goal), and by giving the choice to the criminal, society gets the least cruel solution in the eyes of the one getting the punishment (meets the moral requirement to do the least cruelty). ... thank you, same here. To me it's an issue of private property ownership for people with no felonious history. Period. The self defense argument is a tangential tactic that I believe weakens the debate - true or not, frankly. And it's a bit of tough guy posturing, on both sides of that debate, which then makes it plain immature to engage in. ... Removing a known threat permanently from society is a rational statement. Noting that it can't be reversed in the case of making an error is a rational statement. Oversimplifying the DP as "vengeance" by the "bloodthirsty" is just as bad as proponents calling opponents' arguments "half measures" and the opponents themselves "whiny" and "rationalizers". It keeps the logical portions of both sides from being discussed rationally. It's a crappy way to debate to minimize any opposing view rather than trying to understand it and disagree with it based on the merits of ones own positions. Of course, Speaker's Corner wouldn't exist then... I agree with your 'old school' conservative positions for sure. DP - I am neither heavily for or against it. I am definitely tired of listening to the weak and emotional posturing arguments of people trying to debate both sides. The issue is the application of the penalty and whether there is an acceptable error level or none at all. Or, in some cases, similar to the Pro-Life abortion folks, there is no middle ground and it's just a visceral moral reaction to it. Application and proof are the real problems if a society wants to have them. I'm not convinced that we are able to do it right except in the most extreme and excessively proven cases. I don't think deterrence is even an argument in the debate, only the relative benefit of deleting a societal threat vs the very serious downsides to making a mistake. I lean towards having it as an option, and then requiring a ridiculous level of proof to even consider choosing that option. Then doing it quietly and not publicly. ... And that's really the root of the problem with financial "benefits" to individuals that come from the government. Once the dust settles, the individual is not benefited and you just end up with superfluous gears in the machine that would hurt people to remove, so no one ever does. As you noted, being able to deduct mortgage interest doesn't actually make it easier to afford home ownership, it means everyone can now afford to spend more to buy a house. It just turns "house dollars" into a different, inflated currency that only houses and mortgages are traded in. I am good with this as long as it is AFTER I pay my home off! but you won't be (if you ever want to sell it) - if they pull the tax benefits out, then your home value will take a corresponding 'correction' down in value to it's "real" value, IMO. See, once you get it in, then all the beneficiaries become stuck with it. the only real winners of 'subsidy' (benefit, entitlement, etc) type actions are those that get in immediately before the market corrects to absorb the action. Continuous 'help' in any area is only real if more and more, new and new, programs and efforts are cut in so help doesn't grow stale. Repeat ad nauseum until you break the bank. ... pretty much a general rule for OC is presenting that outside hip (left hip on a left door) - when starting, an OC pretty much can't underdo it. more is better when you get better, you can dial in the 'right' amount get that right leg nice and strong - forward up and out the other issue is team timing, if the point or IC is late relative to you, that also causes you a lot of issues - can't really tell without video - find a good 4way guru to help you out or take a good camp sometime - lots of fun stuff to learn ... I'm good with that too. Mortgage interest deduction........but but but but,,, that's one of MY 'special' perks. If you get rid of that, hundreds of politicians will lose votes. Tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) severely limits the influence churches have when it comes political campaigns and their ability to lobby. I wonder if those calling for churches to be taxed like businesses are ready to open the floodgates of religious lobbyists... so freedom of religion is special in terms of tax treatment. Got it. I'd extend that benefit to environmental groups - their fanaticism has reached religious fervor (faith without fact) Will you be lobbying for gun purchases to be tax free? And firing ranges too? How about any group that has an opinion that needs speech? At least internet providers for sure. Perhaps movie theators - they do advise me on what I can't yell within their walls..... I think locksmiths help me exercise my right to keep soldiers from quartering in my house...... I can't testify against myself, maybe legal firms should be tax exempt......they advise me about practicing that right...just like a church leader advises one on practicing religion If lobbyists are the problem, then we should get rid of lobbyists for all companies. I'm just sayin' (and feelin' "snarktastic" too) ... Better marketing. yup churches should be taxed just like every other business. Organized business that provides a means to practice religion (even when sincere) is no more protected by our rights - It shouldn't be freedom of 'religions', it SHOULD be freedom for individuals to practice faith Gun clubs aren't tax exempt - 2nd amendment Advertising companies aren't tax exempt - 1st amendment (now there are some groups that claim to protect the 1st and do get tax exempt statuses also - they shouldn't) etc etc etc rights accrue to individuals, extending that to businesses that assist in the practice of rights is crappy overreach - similar to treating companies as individuals.... this is a bit of a libertarian thing, I guess - as the other philosophies seem just fine with socialization of individual rights to collective groupings..... ... Keep up. Doctors don't need to an inventory of my property. They are always welcome to ask but don't require an answer. It doesn't have to be legislated, but it's certainly good manners that a doctor doesn't attempt to get the information without the parent present. there was an episode of the Simpson's where Homer and Marge had to go to 'parenting' training. they gave great tips on the use of screen doors, putting food IN the refrigerator, not driving with the baby on the roof of the car, or letting a child nap in a shut deep freeze, etc etc. All really good advice. ... no, it would be appreciated just as much as if my mailman did, or if the dentist, or a lawyer. and just as unnecessary, but good intentions go a long ways. Each of those people is also welcome to opine about global warming as well. Or recommend a good restaurant in town. And I'd still not tell him if I own guns, where the jewelry is locked, or which window is the bathroom the women in my house shower in. Not everyone thinks that all roles in society have to be Politically correct social worker roles that parrot the party line. I find that just as bad as everyone being a little nosy church lady telling us all how to live. "Individuals" can do as they like and be listened to or not. Once again - 1 - no laws are needed that prohibit asking questions and giving useful advice. Even if it's bad advice, or partisan hackery. 2 - that said - it's just as bad when lobbying organizations try to mandate their membership to take on these things in their practice even when not necessary in the fulfillment of their roles ... Because that is a large part of what these organizations do, they are a fancy lobby group. They also do research and provide policy statements on the legalization of MJ. Should we ban doctors in Colorado from asking parents if they smoke MJ and then let them give some advise regarding the safety aspect of doing that around your newborn? If you don't like the position of the AAP, membership isn't mandatory. There are ABP certified pediatricians who are not members of AAP. If you strongly believe that a doctor is putting their political viewpoints before your care, you need to find a better doctor. Banning doctors from asking questions because you disgree with the political viewpoints of their "lobby group" is really stupid. are you arguing with me? because we agree on every single point here, and I don't want people to read your replies to me and think I don't ...
