  1. Ya, in pizza boxes with bible quotes on them..... I wonder if there's a law against that.... ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. you are smart - get the agreement up front so there's not confusion when it gets into the thick of things. Good luck. have fun. We absolutely loved our last couple of video guys. Such great chemistry and great video... and even if it evolves to a contractor role (vs 'teammate') it's still necessary to lay it out and have you in the planning/schedule meetings - you have a life to live (And I've also done a lot of camera, so this is really from both sides of the debate) ... 3. Tolerance is a nine letter word. As a confirmed minister in the Church of the 8+ Letter Words, I find your blasphemy offensive. FINE!!! then don't bake me a cake ... 4. it's all about the major religious rites: baptism confession spinning pizza dough communion confirmation spreading cheese annointing the sick last rites seriously, tolerance isn't just any other 7 letter word, get with it ... 5. There are camera guys....and then there are CAMERA GUYS. Any idiot seems to be able to strap a GoPro to his head and then demand to get paid for it on his very next jump. Finding a really good one is great, and harder than it appears. We've had camera guys that I'd hesitate to let follow us out a door at all, and then others that we'd be happy to pay slot, expenses, and then we'd buy dinner and drinks for him too. I had one guy where he offered to video for us. We noted he was new, and he had to show us he could do the job (we are very tight and still in the sky). He took his slot on the first dive to prove it. Got the video - FF lens, barely in frame much of the time, but not at all some of it, not really judgable. He comes up and says, "OK, I think jump + $15 is fair?" we agreed, and encouraged him to go find someone that would pay that for him - we wouldn't. You need to figure that out with your camera guy. How experienced is he, what does he want to get out of it? What kind of teammate do the 4 of you expect to get? What parts of the 'team' work load will he take on? Some will pay their own way to be on the team. Others will pay their own way to practice and learn the craft. then get slot and pack when they get better (judgeable). Then get a little extra when they get real good (tight and clean enough, for team video, training usefulness, consistent and doesn't miss exits) (I'm a fan of this model). Others get full expenses. Others get 'break even' kind of deals. One thing, if the cameraman pays his own way, then he's an equal member of the team - period. Input in briefs and debriefs, planning, medals, etc etc etc. Also, if there is work on the video, he wants to try to learn different exit types, or get good footage from odd angles, etc, the team also supports this just like the 4way training too. (example, he's been doing peel exits and wants to practice leading exits....that's just as important to the team as if the 4way wants to practice Block 8) If he's paid, then he's an employee - so how that plays out is up to the 4way (hopefully they choose to treat a good cameraman as an equal team member, but bottom line ends up being who's shelling out the $$ IMHO though). ... 6. What I don't like is how people rationalize that making cakes and pizzas, or flower arrangements, landscaping, doctoring, computer repair, whatever - can even be considered part of practicing one's faith. Faith is supposed to be internal, not pushed on others. Service/business to others is orthogonal to faith - unless one's job is directly administering to another's faith. So I can see a priest or a rabbi, or a minister refusing to give professional service based on religious beliefs...... but I can't think of many other jobs that would apply. It's really a disconnect to tie two things totally unrelated together. Politics is the rationalization of one's whims. Pretty disgusting. ... 7. this ^^ We're hosting a 5 day camp starting tomorrow and have taught the mantis camp (based on the Airspeed curriculum) for 15 years or so. If one wants to learn to tunnel fly, then tunnel coaches all the way. If one wants to learn to skydive better, then a good coach that knows that helps IMMENSELY. The wrong coach won't help as much even if any time in the airflow helps. I had a student go to the tunnel to get better at RW 4-way skills. He hired a tunnel coach. He went through the very basics of belly motions and then was immediately directed to start back flying, etc. It wasn't what he wanted. We found him the right coach afterwards. (A tunnel coach that also skydives/competes can also coach with those in mind, directly for 4-way, VFW, or any of the skydiving disciplines, however, is worth his weight in gold. I know several.) OP - pick your coach carefully and you'll have the most amazing learning and skills progressions ... 8. I didn't propose a strawman, so this is another strawman. You are on a roll. yes you did - now you're just being contradictory ... later gotta take a call.... then off to a wind tunnel for a few days..... it's a happy place ... 9. I did, on purpose. But which strawman looks worse? That's the important part, not how the world really works, but which cliche takes root in the minds of those wanting to get one over on the others. 1 - Biased preferencing helps alleviate the worry about biased preferencing. 2 - Not being biased helps alleviate the worry about biased preferencing. The defense rests. Perhaps a offensively, but resting. Edit: the goldilocks gambit is usually the safe bet with consensus builders.......too much biased preferencing makes it worse, too little biased preferencing doesn't help it any, but JUST RIGHT biased preferencing just pisses off the uncaring puppy kickers ... 11. Private businesses can do as they like, another category is senior discounts. But in reality, a discount for them is still a net increase for everyone else. So that's the tradeoff. I don't mind that tradeoff mostly. the intention is positive. But it's still a tradeoff. Is it fair to charge one person a different fee for the exact same service or product? However, it's not about fair, it's about business, isn't it? Phrase it a different way - We'll charge and extra 5% to non-vets... We'll charge an extra 10% to non-whites/30 somethings/ etc etc etc Different tangent: What do you think of volume discounts? same discussion? or different? ... 12. "doing nothing" strawman - So a focus on eliminating discrimination is nothing With that logic I agree, we should just jump straight to preferential treatment based legislation, of course. ... 13. Disagree, I see nothing wrong with policies encouraging companies to hire those with a physical or mental handicap. that's laudable on the surface - worth thinking about But I have to start from equal treatment of all... I think policy that eliminates negative discrimination is our requirement Policies that encourage positive discrimination for specific focus groups just seems like it's a bad path to start down. But if any company chooses to do it voluntarily can still net a benefit in terms of the good will of their customers and communities. I worry about well meaning -legislative- (not private) policies that aren't focused on equality. They eventually end up being discriminatory in other ways, or even retributive or wildly inefficient. ... 14. You are talking about any applicable experience being a good reason to consider a candidate - ABSOLUTELY. that's not what I'm talking about - if it enters into selecting less qualified candidates, or quotas, or excluding others from consideration for no other reason, or giving a tax break to employers to preference one group over another, then it's just wrong in short: "makes sense" to hire is fine - enacting policies to 'encourage' a biased decision is not ... 16. exactly what does this mean - EVERYONE says it about every job. I get it, people want to appreciate others and people want more money. And these jobs are important and valuable. But they still get what they get. There is no "should" in pay. military, teachers, firemen, fast food workers, professors, etc etc etc. There is only the negotiated contract to trade labor for pay. "should" is whining. Don't take the job. Should I assume you are a big fan of wage fixing, price fixing, and dramatic minimum wage increases? Or only for specific jobs that you consider important. I'm also not a fan of preferential hiring practices, of any kind, and if we are stay consistent, that has to include vets. Equal playing ground is the ONLY correct answer. ... 17. well - if someone doesn't vote, clearly that means they can't get to the polling place, which means they can't afford to go. Therefore, if we wallow in the stereotypes of the extremes of each party, that person would have voted as far left as possible. It's genius - any default vote goes left. sounds a lot like interpreting loose chads even more like the Franken election where people would write in "anybody but this asshole" with an arrow pointing to Franken's name. Because there was an arrow, they'd 'interpret' the voter's intent as voting for Franken politics is weird and obtuse ... 20. Oh - disqualifying an individual from public office because of what someone else has achieved in their lives. sure, great It's right in line with preferential voting based solely on race or gender. Hell, Hillary has opened up with the whole "I HAVE A VAGINA" speech a couple weeks ago - and then nothing substantive other than that. Well, other than the whole she doesn't trust the government to handle her e-mail for her, yet wants the government to handle everything else. Including our e-mails probably.....just not hers... MUCH better than having an informed position about them and making the call based on whether you agree with them or not. this whole thread is pretty much what's wrong with the voting public - Lawrocket had it correct in trying to be funny up thread. that's exactly the kind of things that people obsess about. Social/subjective issues, I try to stay out of it, other than as discussion fodder, try to trust those directly involved to make decisions for themselves. But it's a lively debate topic to discuss regardless (until the absolutists on both sides get in and start being assholes to each other - then easier to disengage once it gets repetitivie). ... 23. Here you seem to be defining the status of the baby/fetus as a person, and I'm assuming you are male - it begs the question......serious question - The pro-choice debate pretty much comes down to the woman deciding the status of the fetus - is it going to be a person vs just some of her tissue. So when a fetus is terminated involuntarily, why not have the mother make the choice if the attack was murder, or assault? And then try it accordingly The other route is to take it from the perspective of the attacker - I'd have no problem in a case like this to state it's murder as the actions of the attacker we either directly, or can be argued to be to analogous to that. (i.e., they've demonstrated the desire to murder, and they actually acted on that desire - thus they are a threat to society in a murderous fashion) ...
