  2. remember, they don't think it was ever 'your money'. It all belongs to politicians. and whatever you get to keep is at their blessing and restraint. They call letting you keep your money (the results of your personal labor) - "reckless spending" You go pay for a new parachute? NO. The government paid for that parachute - the money you used was just a Pre-subsidy to you. It's much more efficient that way. You need to thank them. i.e., we all work for them, we get paid nothing, but they are good overlords that will provide food and shelter - if they feel like it Edit: too cynical? ... 3. directly speaking? sure, why not. but in practice? no. if the tax is something that is apparent and part of the social contract and known up front then at least it's a known equation this is different - this is directly in violation of the plan intent ... 4. Let's try an example for everyone else since you are just playing a semantics point anyway - Kallend puts $50,000 after tax money aside for his daughter's college. After over a decade, the fund grows to $80,000. Under the expressed design and intent of the 529 as approved, that $30,000 gain is not to be taxed if she uses it for education. Now, it's time for her to go to school - Government takes a third to half of it in taxes in direct violation of the purpose of the 529 plan. That portion is confiscated. That's a hell of lot different type of tax than just everyday taxes that are known up front. This is de facto confiscation of funds. - If this were approved, it would essentially be a deletion of the 529 option. Since it would now be just treated like any other private investment. - IMO - the only way this would even possibly avoid an illegal and immoral result would be if this were approved, it would have to be only on a go forward basis or the US government would be in breach of contract. Any gains made prior to the rule change would have to be safe from the theft. Are they doing that? or breaking the contract with people already in it? it makes a big difference..... there is already a mechanism to tax those gains - it happens if the gains are NOT used for education......... it's so incredibly ANTI-EDUCATION that it's ridiculous - it's really just another first step for nationalization of another industry. And just as idiotically and damaging as the ACA. AGAIN, let these guys have the balls to just state their end game and ask for approval (ie, single payer for health insurance, nationalization of post education). These little ratcheting steps are terribly damaging. ... 5. Well, the President wants to make community college free. Probably all college free. So if there's $200k sitting in an account for college, that money isn't needed, anymore. So the government should get it to pay for free community college. Make sense? Sure - 401K's are for retirement. So will government hijack those funds too to underpin Social Security? The entire obligation from the government was that 529's accrued tax free if the gains were used on education. This is a complete breach of the intent - a total reversal. So we have to wonder, is the government itself subject to being held to contractual obligations or not? Of course, the solid legal argument of "they got it, I want it" is compelling I'm sure. Much like the powerful - "he did it first" defense. Successful or not, the mindset behind this proposal terrifies me. ... 7. So here's the process, take specific people that injure you or offend you, tag a label to them and then add that label to a huge grop. Spread the hate for the individuals liberally over that huge group. Now you hate everybody in the group including those that never did anything wrong. 17. Let people and private businesses choose who they do business with and then let the market decide? That's just crazy talk. this - ^ (I understand and agree with this statement - though still tricky if there are no other market alternatives in the area I'd like to contrast this to my ability to understand a position and yet not have to agree with it - apparently an impossible feat for many people to comprehend) ... 19. sometimes you just like to just manufacture a reason to argue it's tiring the phobe clearly was trying to make some kind of point - whether he did it perfectly to your satisfaction or not, or whether the phobe read the briefs of the other case, or even understood them, that is still one read of the possible list of motivations it's not impossible to expect that someone like this will have an epic fail in the attempt. yet still some can ascribe the purpose behind the attempt as Jerry postulated. In fact, I'd say it's more likely that since this was his topic, he might be dumb, or a troll in essence by trying to be anti-PC escalatory (like freedom of speech idiots vandalizing private property and thinking it applies - they have a message, they just screwed up while trying to make it) so a couple options, he might just be an asshole; or, he had a point to make but pretty much failed in practice even if the point would be discussion worthy regardless - it got a lot of press I think the courts got it right - they should provide the product (cake) at a minimum without bias. ... 20. Agreed. According to the article, the order for the cake itself was placed well in advance. Only when the pick-up date came close did the patron give the bakery the desired text. Definitely indicates the patron did it on purpose to make the point. As for the other bakery that refused to make a cake for a gay wedding -- they knew up front what the order was for, and chose not to take the business. If that bakery wanted to sell just the cake and let the patrons write in the names of the couple, perhaps that patron would have accepted the compromise (assuming there was writing requested on that cake). Regardless, that bakery chose not to take the job. Their loss. IIRC, someone else was happy to take the business. Problem solved. You get it. Though I do like the idea that if the bakery doesn't like to put a message on, they really should offer to make the cake itself. If that's unsatisfactory, then the customer should take the business elsewhere. Or learn to decorate cakes. It's gets sticky though if there's only one bakery in town....... ... 21. I'd put a small side bet that this customer placed the order for the sole purpose of making that point....which is something one can appreciate. Well, we can appreciate that he's an idiot who doesn't understand the point. More likely he understood the point very clearly and wanted to make a statement about equality of customer service. (it could be possible he's an idiot, etc,,, but this appears to be very staged to Jerry's point. If you have to force a private business to do one thing, then it applies to every message of any kind. Even if we don't like it. It's interesting.) ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  24. Sorry - I was on the piercing comment. circumcision has at least arguments (true or not in today's world) that would be used as a medical procedure. That's the thread here I guess piercing, body ornamentation - not at all medical I'm wondering if we are pointing out the same thing but from different directions. I've seen women arguing vigorously against circumcision while holding their toddler daughter who has holes punched in their ears. I find it very at odds to say the least. ... 25. I'd split it out though, then. If you do it to someone that has no choice in the matter (or is not old enough to choose for themselves) and there is no 'true' health reason, it's mutilation, simple enough. If you do it to yourself, then it's just a fashion choice. no biggie. Normiss - ; ) As for calling piercing mutilation, I did that on purpose. Even if someone else doesn't call it that, what do you call punching a hole through another human being involuntarily? Why is it ok to do it to a baby or toddler, but assault if you forced another adult to do it? ...
