  1. you phrase that as when "WE" stop thinking of ..... what group is this 'we' that you're a part of? any group needs to stop thinking of themselves as 'us' and other groups at 'them' I don't think that attitude is the sole province of any specific group and not any other ... 2. really interesting you are just ready to just blithely disregard the opinions of these people I'm not invested one way or the other here, all I know was it was a bit off putting to see how 'giddy' the national news anchors were about it this morning. I'd really would have absorbed it a bit better if the delivery and attitudes were professional and objective. Gen Powell made some good statements in an interview about it though. He thought it was ok, but we need to be very watchful and that it doesn't excuse the treatment of the people or the bad policies of the Cuba gov in any way. that seems reasonable ... 3. I actually agree with the part that all people have opinions and we can listen or not and should be biased by their cosmetics. I do disagree about it ONLY being extreme righties. I see it here across the board. Even so, it's confusing - the following is used for 3 or 4 different social issues, but this thread is the epitome of it Posters here "Group A has a unique situation, people from Group B need to shut the hell up and LISTEN as they don't understand the situation, they aren't wired to - we need to listen to Group A and ignore Group B. What people in Group A have to say is special" Some guy "Well, I think people are people, but if you insist, it sounds good, so here's some quotes from people in Group A" First posters "what the HELL dude? why are you quoting from people in Group A like it's something special? we're all just people." anyway, it's good for a laugh ... 5. Internal terrorists? wow Let me clarify it for you; how about Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton, EPA, IRS, OSHA, GreenPeace? You don't think these entities have been intimidating and extorting money and actions? It's no different. So you're clarifying that the US government is a terrorist organisation? How in the hell did we get here in just four posts?!??!?!? Not sure...ask rush and airdvr and Hitler. Don't mention the war! I think I got away with it. just like Clinton Mission Accomplished! ... 7. nonsense - if they wanted to do that, here's the dialogue (Speaker's Corner version if this happened in the US) 1 - So someone in the bank went all 'cowboy' and tried to save the day. 2 - Then crooked cops went in and shot a misunderstood muslim man. 3 - Cops probably assumed the man was 'brown' of skin, though photos make that hard to tell or not. See attachment 4 - Even civilians got killed too. This is what happens when guns and cops are involved now that's an insensitive tangent ... 10. correlation instead of causation maybe? 1 - most spicy foods have backgrounds from poorer, less affluent historical backgrounds. (i.e., very spicy covers the taste of food going bad)..... even in those cultures, you find the 'high end' dishes to be more mild and subtler than the regular populace menu..... 2 - rough times and poverty will evolve more aggressive males as a survival mechanism I'm not surprised at this type of observation anyway ... 11. so Quade talks about the 'marketplace' now it's moved to a 'pure free market' I can counter with 'pure socialism' points, but I think it would also be a non-value added digression. We all know the damage going down that road would be also. so in the discussion about 'balance' (relative to today's world, not fear of issues from decades ago that are, frankly, moot today) I do think that today's world and the availability of opportunity and ready information frees up the workforce to make better and better decisions - thus making it more and more difficult for companies to be abusive - at least those that would do so, not all companies are 'pure profit' in philosophy, but those arent the ones we worry about. So the answer is we are in a position to move in the direction of freeing the market rather than tightening controls....but the trend seems to be incrementally in the opposite direction. I suspect that is likely more examples of causing hurt despite good intentions (not on the part of the politicians, but on the part of the members of society). I get your points, though. So that's my opinion on why I think 'less' is the right way to go. I've like to understand why others think MORE is the right philosophy, but in today's context, not the 1930's....and just arguing that less is fear of changing the status quo. Edit: there is likely a better thread for this. I thought this thread was about chauvinistic antiquated societal roles. Rather than antiquated economic/business theory. as long as it's out of date, I guess.... ... 12. good reply, my apologies as I almost skipped it after the snarks (including mine to start the flow) as always, it's a balancing act - But, in the end, even the people making the policy are still motivated by self interest - but now they have more impact than regular individuals. you want to regulate rotation of crops until farmers learn that their long term interest is to do it anyway? I like it you want to force people to buy a specific brand of product because they had a good PR campaign and politicians think it'll buy votes? I don't like it you want to artificially prop up the economy short term to buy votes even though it'll devastate our economy and several other countries' economies as a result? I don't like it the problem I see is people stating the obvious examples, and then taking up a position that more is better, and even more is even more better, and even more too. and the politicians love to hear that for sure ... 13. interesting statement there...IMHO - it indicates a serious distrust in people being capable on their own to choose what they think they need and want. And the assumption that the betterment of mankind demands pure self sacrifice on the part of individuals, even forced on them if necessary. and more.... so mankind as a group can only be better when individuals are poor and miserable - got it seems to be a lesson that mass religious groups tried for centuries, now cloaked in terms of something else more palatable? ... 15. If the 'advocates' from either side accuse you of being hardcore for the other side, then you are likely doing something right (by my standards anyway - thrifty in spending and socially not-intrusive). Main reason is the socially driven elements seem to be the ones that get bent out of shape and won't discuss things reasonably. But I generalize. I always generalize ; ) ... 16. I have no issue with a healthy skeptism, or a healthy awareness, etc - but I consider we need to be respectful of each other regardless of our jobs or roles. I'd think someone that thinks "99%" of LEO are doing their best would not jump to a default 'healthy disrespect' position healthy disrespect - I don't even know what that means. Is it 'active' and in your face? well that's just stupid. If it's veiled and passively obstructive? well that helps no one. If it means I have pre-conceived biases and act on those before seeing if the person in front of me even displays poor behavior - well, that means you are actively making everything worse for everyone. if it means that we wait until we something see a specific individual doing something clearly wrong with their position and authority and we question that and followup with their bosses? I think that's great. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  17. I've always thought you were a libertarian that just tries to self identify with a 'liberal' label because that's the social circle you identify with or was raised to think the 'liberal' label is special in philosophy rather than just another tag for a political agenda. Or a guy that at least has more fun arguing from that bias than the others... ; ) I find Speaker's Corner doesn't have alot of true (liberals, conservatives). Rather we have a lot people that are very opposed to a false stereotype that they've been indoctrinated about. So they self label to the opposite group. To be true believer on either side, you really have to be some kind of fanatic, or a one issue weirdo, or very very wide eyed to the real world. ... 18. I'm not either. Now of those 400 - How many are eliminated if we get rid of crooked cops? How many are eliminated if we get rid of terrible thugs? How many are accidents? I'm not satisfied with the two answers I'm seeing on this site: 400, 0, 0 0, 400, 0 I suspect the first number low. But those are very important to address that issue. I suspect the 2nd number is huge. Now digging into the root causes for that is something worth investigating - and also a clear statement of the conflict of new age social strategy (and the general trend of self isolation and anonymity is huge here, IMO) as well as past sins and biased attitudes across all segments of the population. I suspect any in the 3rd number is really sad and a tragedy for everyone involved. ... 19. Horribly painful to watch. 1 - I hope the goal wasn't to just embarrass that asshole Gruber. I think 50 acts of contrition from Gruber is enough. What's the point of the further pushing. Is 99 enough? 2 - The goal should be to find out if Gruber's statements were representative of the process and everyone else involved. i.e., the ONLY thing we need to know is if the american people were purposely misled for the sake of getting a piece of legislation through. I found all the online videos to be about #1, I was hoping to see questioning that focused on #2 what a waste - if they were pushing #1 type questions, etc just to subtly get to #2, then I'm also pissed, ask the freaking questions right out and direct The left is throwing Gruber under the bus on this, and he really is an idiot. As he's cooperating and sacrificing himself in the process. ... 22. actually all these things killed him but if you feel that way, and if you die someday having sex, we'll make sure your wife goes to jail? 1 - If at all possible (I think it applies here since the cop had backup), cops need to be trained to just avoid the neck area when restraining someone. 2 - Up to the point when a suspect is restrained, that suspect owns 90% of any problem resulting from passive or aggressive resistance. So I don't spend a lot of time on the 'choke' or whatever hold, even though I think it's a terrible technique (when there is sufficient cops and no weapons to protect from) 3 - Once the suspect is restrained and cuffed, then he is ABSOLUTELY the responsibility of the cops that are in charge of him. He is now to be treated as helpless, and under their care. #3 above is where I'm very upset at the cops - this is pure and absolute negligence to allow someone that is under their care (due to being restrained by them) to take such poor action. I'd call for criminal negligence (IMO) in a criminal trial, but absolutely negligence that will, as a minimum, be upheld in a civil action. I think criminal negligence is only reasonable charge to make. And then followed by the civil case regardless of the result. Focus on the restraining technique is a no win. Frankly, I suspect activists recognize this and will make the biggest deal on the no win - as their goal is to generate criminal unrest everywhere - rather than the productive discussions that are really needed on police procedures. ...
