  2. Thanks...I am rather immature, but 36 pages in and this thread is now useless. you a very patient person for someone that declares themselves immature - they lost me after 36 posts but killing time is a good way to exercise my Dexter complex ... 3. yes and yes I resonate mostly with libertarian ideals, but no one is a pure libertarian to the point of being the stereotype. I'd love it if legislature and executive functions 'start' from basic ideals of fiscal thriftiness and social acceptance of individuals - combines with a strong bent towards personal responsibility and personal rather than enforced charity. then deviates cautiously and reluctantly for a very restricted set of functions that just plain need cooperative management. (I do believe there are pure steretypes of Reps and Dems, mostly due to reading this forum though - ) I also find some social structures appropriate and many others completely unnecessary. Just like everyone else here. (except those few outliers persons mentioned already) Lawrocket's response is pretty good, I can't really add to it. ... 4. and not hidden at all "Government guiding businesses to be more environmentally responsible would be great and we used to actually expect them to do it - but that's not what they really do. They are more and more obvious as time goes forward that it's not their real goal - which is just the buy votes and power. Any randomly devised and ambiguous action they falsely claim is for the "good of the People" is becoming more and more ridiculous, yet is being lapped up like tasty, delicious coolaid off of a nearly clean tile floor by the masses so very desperate for the leadership they pretend exists because they are too pathetic to provide their own" So here's your choices - what you imply "all business will pollute at will vs gov doing the right thing and forcing them to be decent" what my cynical view is saying "some businesses would pollute and should be directly acted against, while some may be just fine vs the government allowing their favored businesses to pollute by passing laws that make people think they are protecting us but really aren't so the politicians get rewarded by their favorites and the deluded voters vote more for them" OVERSIMPLIFIED - it seems you trust no business and trust the government - while I trust some businesses, not a lot of the other businesses, and the government not at all I suspect in reality - a mix of expectations for politicians and businesses is the right way to play it. But no fun for impotent political discourse on a website that makes no difference in real life. pick a party, I think it applies to either, and many times, to both as they cooperate in it ... 5. yes, exactly, you got me, nicely played (my reply either way really doesn't matter as this is the tack you will take regardless of my response the real answer is I didn't state anything about how the businesses should operate relative to gov control - my point is that the gov SHOULD be our guardian against abuse as noted but they don't actually do that in practice. They abuse the system to buy votes, not protect us. So pick the abuse you want to have - you get to choose between what the companies may or may not do (and if they do it it'll be pretty bad) depending on their leadership's morality (not predictable either way) or what the government does as SOP. But since I've stated that about 20 different ways and you still go after the tangential point I'm not making, this is the last time) edit: apparently the 2nd to last time... ... 8. I'm applying for a federal grant to implement a program that would prevent monkeys from stealing cars, because, you know, it could possibly be a problem someday. Good idea. I've actually sent a few notes to my congressman to tax rich people more so we can fund a program to teach monkeys to drive. Monkeys need to be able to drive to the polls and vote. And Bill Gates didn't 'earn' that money anyway. ... 9. not in practice - that's more libertarians. "conservative" and "liberal" are terms that I don't even recognize any more they've been hijacked and 'modified' so many times we should all fall over from dizzyness Dems and Reps are both all about the government doing things their way (whatever that is, and even if it changes every day) and about making everyone else follow suit. And they REALLY love blaming "anyone else" including government after the fact. I'm only very gratified in the confidence that, no matter how all this Ebola stuff turns out, there will be several really good friends of many left and right type congressmen that will somehow end up even more rich and powerful as a result of this excursion. I'm here to help. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  10. so confusing - 1 - the hospital covered it's own asses by accusing the first nurse of "not following protocol"..(sure, a trained nurse will be lackadaisical about EBOLA protocol). 2 - now for the second nurse traveling, the CDC is being bitchslapped because they DID follow protocol 3 - I haven't seen how they (hospital or CDC) will blame the 2nd nurse for getting it. should be an interesting rationale sigh ... 12. Ahh ok, so you are just thinking out of the box and doing some synergistic brainstorming on a highly engagable solution. Ie. just throwing around some "motherhood statements" to sound important....gotcha, you betcha. you don't have to be an ass all the time. we've had really good discussions before. you win, whatever you want to claim in this thread. it's pure gold. 1 - I tell Andy he's turned me around on voter ID. I point out that the inconsistency in how we handle rights isn't in voting, it's in the 2nd amendment. I comment we need to be more proactive in enforcing the law. 2 - He responds by accusing me of wanting to tar and feather others - a veiled racist accusation 3 - I reply we need to follow the law. 4 - You call me 'captain obvious' and play a trite how much does it cost 5 - I give up and tease you as a libertarian 6 - you claim victory 7 - I acknowledge I don't much care about the debate 8 - You accuse me of trying to sound like a big shot you guys are amazing - every post is an insult. enough is enough. ... 14. just not invested in the debate - I'm here for my personal entertainment. But if I gave you an answer, how do you propose we take our fantastically cooperative Rehmdekker solution and get it implemented? I'm aquiver with anticipation. 17. Yeppers. Lets tar n feather em, cuz, you know, there's an epidemic of it. It's like Ebola. if there's one or a million, we should enforce the law - same as for people that abuse gun ownership, or shout 'fire' in a theator, etc etc etc. that's all. I'm not claiming it's huge. that's another crowd. You want to ignore crime, then you don't get to be Batman - not even a little bit. ... 19. Guns, guns, guns. OK, now tell us which of these Constitutional rights routinely require a photo ID to exercise: religion, speech, press, assembly, to petition the government for redress, speedy, public jury trial in criminal cases, public jury trial to adjudicate civil lawsuits and, the entirety of all the unlisted rights that are implicitly ours this is great - if we approach the innocent until proven guilty and the idea that people are responsible and make their own choices, then it's clear that as a society we are willing to take the risk of abuse by some to ensure our rights to the rest of us is unencumbered. This is very much a position of individualism, not social collective philosophy, nicely libertarian really. I agree - Gun ownerships is very severely over restricted and needs parity to the other rights. SC has failed to protect that right. You just turned me around on voter ID. But, to NOT be a hypocrit, we do need to be consistent with all our rights. Clearly gun (private property) ownership is abused and not consistent. For voting and all the others, we don't pre-screen voters (gun owners, speech, etc) , but we do need to catch illegal voters (etc) in the act and very severely take that crime seriously. ... 20. I think if you dwell on it a bit, your point is a bit orthogonal to the discussion but the parts that are, actually seems to support my point better. I'm not a fan of bikes having to fund cars either, but you yourself would make the argument that your food supply is supported via the roads.....(though I'd reply you could pay for that portion via your food purchases and the food supplier pays directly for the roads and passes the bit on to you - so you pay more directly rather than inferred via some dorky socialization argument - but tolls were tougher to administrate than they would be today). I'll try to live in your analogy - It's more like living in a town with bikes and cars only and then the local government forces everyone to support a train service that isn't used and isn't needed because a couple guys think 'trains are neat' - by the way, they are friends of the mayor and own train maintenance companies. In the meantime, the budget for the train means you have fewer bike paths and roads and everyone pays more anyway. What really sucks is so many bicyclists getting killed by trains every year by empty trains running all the time. the trick to these arguments is that people have very fundamental assumptions of what constitutes a optimal society - when those 'obvious' (to us) assumptions are polar opposites (social collective vs individualism), then it's hard to speak, as intuitively we are already completely unable to find that common ground. the fact that your example 'makes your point' but also 'makes my point' is pretty much proof. ... 21. sure sounds nice doesn't it? but that's just the very poorly hidden mask they wear in practice it is really ensuring targetted infringement of others for the subjective benefit of select group or groups - and yet we keep asking for more "econsystem damage" - did you do that on purpose? if so, it's pretty clever and I like it. If not, it's still pretty clever. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

Fair enough, let me ask you this then: Would yo rather live next to that, or next to: *oil refinery *coal mine *coal fired plant *nuclear reactor *oil platform *fracking operation ? duh - bikini model oiling staion (the nuke seems like it has the potential to be done in the least intrusive fashion alternatively, if I lived next to an oil platform, then it would depend on the quality of the yacht or rowboat that I own - living on the water would be cool or miserable depending on accommodations) ... 25. I find that weak if it's attempted to be forced on the business up front rather than as a consequence of doing business where the customers themselves assess that impact and respond via demand/supply. Either party in charge could use that excuse to create any level of penal or supportive costing to try and 'level' out the 'fairness'. In no way would it be realistic or driven by real world concerns, only politics. (pretty much what is happening today and where the true fanatics are trying to push even farther - note we have advocates on this forum alone that 'feel' that gasoline should be taxed to push the price up over $10/gallon - and this is their convenient rationalization). For example - if the actual costs of these 'downstream' penalties were about $3 per unit of energy, in reality, environmentalists will claim it's $50 and the world will end. the manufacturers would claim it's under $1 and that the fields will grow roses and golf courses and chipmunks will live healthy fun lives. then - whoever was in charge would do whatever the hell they want based on payoffs and potential for a lot of votes. ...
