  1. I'll do whatever works for the student. Yes, I'll always start with the syllabus because they own the DZ. But I really do hate to lead with anything that describes as "drop" anything. I see too often where 'drop a knee' or 'drop an elbow' will inadvertently also give an accidental ab crunch - now I have to train in two thoughts instead of one (1 - dig the elbow and 2 - don't forget to keep your junk down through the move while digging the elbow). As for me, keeping the junk low is top priority. neat thing about teaching - finding what works for each of us (student and instructor) ... 2. yes they are - they try to control the masses to follow their vision of society whether the giving is voluntary or not is moot so are political parties, so are the big organized social efforts/causes, so are some really big corporate entities, so are the big organized unions, etc etc etc they are all the same thing really - what matters is their effect and how they go about their business. but that is a mixed bag of good vs bad, just like everything else ... 3. actually, I'm not following the thread from the top. I was ONLY commenting on the whole "religion/Jesus is a socialist concept". jumped in at the halfway point It's really wrong. It's based on a misconception that doing good for others is only a socialist position and not possible under any other social structure. Which is crap. For that matter, the whole leveraging religious myth as underpinning that argument is weak/goofy anyway and solely just for poster bashing. I appreciate a good bashfest, but it's really reaching. You might get picked on less if you weren't so preachy - it's like listening to an environmentalist at times. Sometime plain talk sells better, but It's likely too late now. ... 4. Right. And Ron belongs to one, yet vehemently hates socialism/communism. Which is what my post was about. no kidding. And I find lots of screwed up things in organized religion and overly devout people also. Yet I still stand by the idea that encouraging good works or setting expectations is infinitely different that forcing it under law. If his church has a policy to lock up members if they don't work in the soup kitchen, then I'll agree with your premise. My point was more specific to the mechanism of good work and the way it's done and its implications/impact. I'd rather talk about those kinds of concepts rather than just participate in the back and forth bashfest that's popular here. have fun, though. entertainment is entertainment for sure every single poster here has multiple times stated things that conflict or done things that conflict with their stated self assessments. doesn't mean any of them are terrible people. I find it a waste of (a LOT) of energy ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  5. churches? meh just another social control structure and I think they actually, subtly and indirectly (but it feeds to the mindset), contribute to the whole problem of people thinking they can dictate morally legislatively. Just because your worship at something official, or worship at another alter of 'social consciousness' or whatever, in any case it sets up a "I know who others should act" type of mindset. The goal should be to encourage people to choose for themselves to do good things, not be lazy and just decide to force others at the point of a gun. I'm talking about individuals, and that choosing vs being forced to do good work is very significant However, if you don't tithe to a church enough, I don't think they can go after your paycheck or put you in jail....that's a pretty huge departure from just being semantics ... 6. another example of why UNIONS (in general), especially public unions are a terrible thing just an overall observation feeding those that repeatedly that cite self interest is inherently evil. well, same group now saying that organized self interest is even worse ... 7. I find it appropriate that people treat their politics nearly as fanatically as a religion. So these comparisons apply. However - advocating being extremely charitable as personal choice by individuals is about as far away from socialism as it gets. big difference between choosing to serve your neighbors in need, and being forced to do it by legislative whim big difference in results as well - VOLUNTARY charity as a cultural norm promotes a positive nature in society. Doing via force....well we all know how horrible that is turning out for those the give and those that receive - it can tear apart entire cultures Every time a rabid socialist gives to a charity, they are a hypocrit. If they are true to form, that giving should directly to the US Treasury - who they obviously think knows better than them how to use the money. Charity and volunteering is about as individualistic an action as it gets. ... 9. I'm sorry, who is that one directed at, I'm at a loss as to which of the 50 or so posters this applies to Hey, if Jerry says he doesn't think Ron was trying to put words into his mouth right after Jerry quite specifically asked Ron not to put words into his mouth, I'll defer to Jerry on that. Until then, I stand pat. Oh, I'm not arguing with you, I've actually ignored the whole exchange. It's just that if once you start posting that comment, it'll be pretty much the only comment you post at all, heck, I can think of two posters here that'll just keep you busy full time just trying to police them on that item alone (trolling to make someone mad). ... 11. the poll options don't work with me - private company can do whatever. 'reasonable' or not doesn't really play no matter how I feel about it I'd also accept the option "meh" (actually I'd prefer that one as a more accurate reflection) I'd not say it's capitalism - any company that depends on government welfare to enable it's employees to stay - well, shame on that company, double shame on those employees for not working elsewhere, and shame on a government structure that allows it. I don't much care for the arguments that will say which of the 3 'started' it. Any one of the three could break that problem. ... 14. and if everyone treats all cops like bad cops...... what you are saying here is if the overall situation is to change, both factions need to stop treating the entire world as if it's composed of the worst of the worst. I don't see that happening just based on the bias I see in this thread, let alone in the real world the problem with trying to treat everyone with the best of expectations.....the worst of us will take advantage and you lose enough hope and stop trying....example - Normiss doesn't trust any cop......cops have to be cautious even with simple traffic stops.....Jeanne just keeps being jeanne....etcetcetc ... 15. thanks for sharing - this is going in my "options" bucket as something to try when warranted. I like the visual that "salute" gives me better than 'dig an elbow'. Mainly because I'm a bit of a fanatic with continuous and correct arching - teaching mantis camps for 15 years will do that. (elbow dig may encourage an ab crunch thought, salute encourages a stand up straight - much closer to the 'junk down' thought that I push) drunk salute, peeing off a bridge, weekend at Bernie's, etc etc etc ... 16. I wonder if the wives and children of cops are in agreement with an attitude of having their husbands walk up with an open hand held out to shake to an angry young shuffling man with his hands hidden in his pockets.... What is, exactly, wrong with wanting to get home safe from any job? and yet you people make fun of the stereotype of "Mayberry".....strange - cops that know all the citizens and mostly don't need to ever be armed or anything else and deal respectfully with individuals as friends. Maybe instead of mocking a Barney Fife or Sheriff Andy stereotype, people might instead take it as a good example. Of course, for the police to act like those guys, it helps to have a citizenry that also acts like small town basically decent people... ... 17. General note - I don't try to force a specific train on anyone. Philosophy is to observe the student and teach whatever my experience (or further observation) indicates will work best for them (or the net class - I can customize any students one on one if it doesn't click). It's about the student. One size does not fit all. (too many new instructors try to fit the student to their training instead of fitting the training to the student - fortunately it is a temporary condition for most) If I'm teaching the shoulder tipping (that's my DZ direction, so I follow it as the primary starting point and it normally works fine).....I focus on a few simple points: straight spine, looking in the direction of the turn, and lifting that opposite elbow as the thought more so than dropping the leading one or just tilting. A broomstick works nice too across the shoulders as a tool (like a stock or water carrier). If that doesn't work, or the student doesn't get it, I adjust until I figure it out for them - digging an elbow, etc all on the table - it's all about the student learning, not what I think works for me. If that doesn't work, ok, then we can beat them with the broomstick If I have them in the tunnel, I usually go straight to mantis so they don't have to unlearn anything later. If they are tunnel trained, then I let them turn during AFF with whatever they are trained on. ... 23. sure, much like the demonstrated Canadian attitude (every single one of you...is that how it's supposed to work?) of judging over 300M people based on a stereotype of a small subset? Is this a liberal thing? treating everyone like duplicates of a stereotype? I though people are individuals. But, hey, if one can only process people by plugging them into preconceived little subgroups. And if that makes them feel superior. Who am I to mess with their coping mechanisms?
