Study: Free Birth Control Leads to Fewer Abortions
rehmwa replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Let's get rid of Schedule A deduction for religious donations. Why should I pick up the tax tab for someone else's social club? Get rid of Schedule A deductions for mortgages too. And group (employer) health insurance for smokers, anyone overweight, skydivers and motorcycle riders. Back to the thread, which wasn't about tax payers paying for contraception, it was about reducing abortions by providing contraception. YES to deleting deductions and exceptions and penalities and artificial tax incentives. Yes to insurance freedom (at least let the free market design the insurance policies and sell them at competitive rates for these risks that people choose for themselves). As well as letting people pay for their own birth control. YES that good birth control also should (obviously) lead to fewer abortions. Definitely people should take responsibility and use birth control they can purchase easily on the free market. nice post. ... I think the post is just the big old WHINE every time I read it. you vote and it gets counted just like everyone else's. The WHINE is really about people that vote and then 'their vote' didn't end up being for the winner and thus they say it was 'wasted'. It's pure narcissism suck it up - sometimes your guy wins, and sometimes your guy loses. But you vote counts every single time. Instead of focusing on whether you picked the winner or not, a REAL wasted vote is one that's cancelled out by an illegal voter. ((cue the rationalizations and accusations)) ... that statement is loaded with preferentially atheistic overtones - which is also not the role - it's a false oversimplification that is abused, but sounds nice to those of us that are skeptical of religious people and faith based beliefs actually, IMHO, politics has a role to ensure people have the right to whatever religion or none they choose for themselves (unless their religion infringes on the rights of others) other than that, absolutely in other words - the government is not allowed to play favorites - at least that's my take on it ... I don't see anything self-righteous in your approach, and your original post was well-worth the read. Much respect. yeah, good for him same theme with religious types - somewhere in there it states that "the righteous man" gets some kind of reward I'm pretty sure the 'self righteous' man just gets mocked and ridiculed too many types cross into the self righteous mode and miss the message - (pick your religion, politics, cause, etc) ... True - that's a great response, but I think the postings here specifically are by smart people (IMHO: BV, Don and Kallend are very smart) that actually get the point, but purposely were obtuse about it to just discuss the tangentials. this wasn't our normal group of angry and dense posters that we expect honest misreads from - these are smarter posters. But the one post (I forget who) essentially reads "You're wrong - here's why my misread of your concept applies to my position" Did you know that healthy societies have people with longer life spans? Perhaps keeping critical patients on life support will reduce heart disease. ... I doubt that as much as - LOTS of money attracts highly motivated hot women competing to land a whale Yes but let's be misogynists…ah I mean prudent hedge fund managers for a moment. Why fully invest in a depreciating asset when you are better off hedging your best and just leasing said asset? You know hookers and blow do sound bad, but if you look at them in terms of financial rewards and return on assets and risk midigation. You really should step away from the blow and just pick up two hookers. you make a cogent argument - however, if competition is high for your attention amongst "hot and highly attractive women looking to land a whale" (HAHAWLTLAW), then wouldn't it be more cost effective to just cycle through the (relatively free) HAHAWLTLAW supply, rotating through the inventory to select age appropriate (subjective to your requirements) HAHAWLTLAW in a fashion to avoid depreciated outliers from the HAHAWLTLAW supply? ... I think it's pertinent that you had to take that entire post and respond point by point to differentiate cause vs effect vs real investment on each of his examples and why they don't address your original point. And that just CALLING the boondoggles an "investment" doesn't make it so. When the whole point of the thread is the inability of some to be able to EXACTLY THAT. It pretty much proves your original assertion in a blatant way. Did you know? Winning NFL teams have new stadiums. And according to the wizard of Oz - the only difference between smart and dumb people is certificates - give the scarecrow a diploma he doesn't earn and suddenly he's smart (suddenly, he pretends to talk smart anyway with a lousy grasp of trigonometry) this whole thread pretty much defines well meaning but poorly thought out social and economic agendas we are flooded with (NOT a party specific comment by any means) {{the mayor of St Paul wants to build a street trolley line - you can look up the reasoning, but it's applicable to the thread}} ... PBS won't go away if they just get advertisers and run it like a business. Oh the horror!! Exactly, Sesame Street is not only financially viable but a hugely profitable enterprise. They earn 15-17 million per year in licensing. I was talking PBS in general. But you are absolutely right. Sesame Street would clean up in the real market. ... that was really WEIRD - I know it's really about net balance and both stayed true to form. But it was still weird to hear the rep argue to retain spending while the dem defended cuts. (macro picture matters - it's not cut and dry. Same discussion applies about talking only tax cuts and not about the rest of the picture - see, both sides tried to play that game) ... What a novel idea - develop the better way to ID killers without violating everyone's rights There's no other discussion until this happens. Excellent - you actually put the horse before the cart instead of Kallend's posts to just kill the horse and lock up everyone in the cart when they've done nothing wrong ... I thought the (frustrated) facilitator did a good job. I thought that both candidates were able to debate and smile and do this in a courteous and direct fashion (it was professional and statesmenlike). They were decent about where they agreed with each other (nice to see - no need to manufacture disagreement where there isn't any) and had enough detail on the disagreements. There were a few strawmen setups ("what my opponent thinks" ) but they were shot down quickly so the normal CRAP the fanatics love didn't get traction - thankfully. I tend to look for when the candidates digress (wander) from the question at hand and start to ramble about generalized speaking points. That shows who tries to debate off the cuff and who has his facts. Same type will also try to crack a joke too if he's lost. Then listen for basic general philosophy first and how it's underpinned. I don't care who I think "won". I just wanted more info on what both think by listening directly what they both say. Got that. I didn't think any of the attempted "zingers" had any real bite (I'm sure the self satisfied fanatics on both sides thought otherwise) - the content was worth it instead. Good debate. ... IMHO - I think innovation is more a result of the company culture than just a reward structure motive to your point - if true, the proof of what you are saying will be directly due to the capitalist nature of the culture (if it's not destroyed), not despite it. Your metric - compare large groups of companies' level of success for those with bonus structures for patent vs those without NOT your metric - Is Shah happy today in his job. revisit this thread in 5 years and we'll check ...
