  1. And funnily, actually no one had ASKED for them... sometimes, I think that just providing general info isn't so bad. we don't need to ask the single jumper what their experience is so much as to just put out the performance opinions and also include jump number and experience expectations for the canopy some listen, some don't - so just giving the correct info (including how to eventually get to those canopies) might be more productive than chewing them out and withholding information in one thread just to give it out elsewhere I don't believe anyone is saved here, in DZ.com, from being a dumbass. I do believe we can help those we actually are local with. ... 2. +1 That old saying is common but confusing as hell, and doesn't provide any sort of good decision making tree. Interpreting it is more like some ancient Greek riddle where one has to consider all the different possibilities until realizing what it means. If the priority to pull is more important than doing so at the correct altitude, we'd pull right out the door. (Even just "pull at the correct altitude" needs to be restated a little differently for newbies, so that you don't have to start adding extra caveats like the mind teaser "don't pull low unless you are".) this is the better discussion - but I don't think it's really that nuanced If we need a 'decision tree' that implies we take different actions depending on what's going on...... Under the 3 priorities (pull at altitude vs pull below altitude being mutually exclusive and, frankly, obtuse) we have 4 possible scenarios. 1 - at altitude (?? +/-200 feet ???) and stable 2 - at altitude and unstable 3 - below altitude and stable 4 - below altitude and unstable (above the cut off deck is "happy wonder freefall portion" that's where we can pull if other stuff is going really bad, but that's freefall training, not pull time training. at or below the cut off altitude is "good clean fun and let's get that darn handle pulled portion") For the perfect scenario #1, I have the ideal pull training - it includes "while arching the whole time - we reach for the darn thing, we feel for the darn thing, we grab the darn thing, and we pull the darn thing") what I want to know, is with this fantastic 'decision tree', what do we want this student to do different for scenarios 2, 3 and 4? I want them to do the same thing for each. So what's the point of the tree? I like decision trees, but only if they actually do something. WE should move this part of the thread to Instructor forum, I think. (sorry to the original poster - you'll do fine, listen to your instructors, not some internet forum) ... 5. here's a tangent an instructor I respect asked me this question... Why do we try to teach new students 3 things, that require sorting and prioritizing, when all three can be accomplished by just saying "pull at the correct altitude"? I agree with him. We're taking something very simple and needlessly making it complicated for someone that just doesn't need that complexity. this gives us the other two without trying: 1 - if we're below the correct altitude or just don't know, then pull anyway 2 - if we're above the correct altitude, then stable or not, we have time to work on it we only really have the one priority ... 6. You've got to agree that there is some role for government in regulating product availability. You simply must! For instance, most people do not have a problem with the government banning the sale of nuclear weapons, or anthrax spores, or nerve agent. The use of all of these things would harm not only the user, but others in society. Some people think that the widespread use of incandescent bulbs harms others in society by requiring more powerplants, more pollution, etc. You may draw the line at a differnt point, but I think you agree that one of the core roles of government is preventing the actions of one citizen from harming another citizen. this is a good response - thanks and I do believe that both parties draw their line too far on one side - not just one party. I throw out something really inconsequential (light bulbs) which is a great example of being way on the wrong side of the line, and the usual suspects jump on it just because it demonstrates both parties are too intrusive and they can only handle it if the examples are R-biased. I can find something just as pissy on the R side and dollars bet they'd cluck and nod and agree that those damn R's are evil and D's are the only good and decent solution to everything. It's nuts. But even this e-mail will likely result in someone responding with pointless vulgarisms since I dare to note the point in government is intrusion and that we've crossed the 'reasonable' line long ago and far away. ... 7. same old crap you guys - it's not being a 'busybody' if it's on your personal agenda. It's not being a busybody if you use government to force others to do things your way. If light bulbs don't give you a decent example, go pick any one of thousands of others out there. Clearly you think that telling citizens what kind of bulb to buy isn't close to being nosy about what you have and own. That's fine - there's plenty of others out there. Perhaps if one ignores which letter (R or D) is next to whatever example you find might make it easier to actually notice that is interference ... 9. no, this is mud slinging to try to make one candidate look bad for following the law but it does highlight a real problem - the tax code sucks. It's too complicated, the government is trying to pick winners and losers. We need a single tax rate for all, and all income gets taxed at that tax rate. No special rates, no deductions, no exemptions, no penalties, no programs,....no freakin' artificial interference by the government. Simple, simple, simple. they just need to stop it - well intentioned maybe, but these all are long term losers. Yes, I'll lose many of my precious deductions and exemptions. I bet I make more in the end just by not hiring an accountant, though. ... 10. I oppose all forms of busibodying, by left or right. Most of the busibodying in the USA is by the right, of course. I'll remember that when I go buy lightbulbs in a couple years. As far as I'm concerned you can buy whatever lightbulbs you want. sure, apparently the 'left' isn't as tolerant as you - they're very 'busybody' in a LOT of aspects as well - it's really the theme of the party - activism implies an almost obsessive increase in government involvement in personal life - to state "most is by the right" is just silly both parties would do well to just butt out on social issues and let people live their own lives ... 13. We're writing past each other. What we want to see on the cover isn't necessarily what we like in real life. It's just a representation conducive to sales - and not necessarily what we consider an ideal. You are positing that it's exactly that - a representation of an ideal. I disagree, and it seems comments from most people on the topic support me. (Unless they are all lying just to score points with the 'crowd'). Remember Liar, Liar (Jim Carrey movie)? "Daddy, my teacher says people are beautiful based on what's inside" "That's just something ugly people say" ... 15. I don't mind the look as long as there is muscle and not just skin/bones. face it, given a choice between: 1 - a cool, athletic, nice and smart girl vs 2 - a cool, athletic, nice, smart and very good looking girl I'd pick #2 back to our points;;;;;;; I don't agree that (what sells) = (what people want for themselves) - there's a difference. Not even IN GENERAL. Look around. I think when shopping for cars, in general, we'd rather see the car clean and waxed rather than just sitting in mud. Doesn't mean in real life we wax the car twice a day reality TV is very popular - but I don't think people, in general, want to be or associate with, stupid idiots clambering for bit of pathetic attention - even if that's what sells as for magazines - you got a point across - something that grabs your attention doesn't necessarily mean that it was attractive, it just stands out - shock value, over the top features or makeup, etc etc etc all works - doesn't mean it = society's standards for attractiveness. Sometimes it's just the opposite ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  19. I wonder if it's that big a deal for those in that 50K - 200K realm when a complicated tax return costs hundreds of dollars to prepare, it sure would be nice to just add up everything, multiply it by a single tax rate, and then send in a check. subsidies, tax breaks, penalties, special rates, etc etc etc are just social twiddling ... 22. I don't think that's driving the bulk of the population - there's a lot more in conflict (public discourse, etc etc etc) and rejection of that standard than support really. example - Post a picture of a skinny (but healthy) girl in Bonfire (not even a runway model) and ask for opinions - I bet more than half the comments are in derision of the girl, or about guys that like a bit of meat on women, or comments about personality, or comments about skychicks being cool because they dive, or comments about attitude. Less than half would be approval. Sometimes the derision is pretty cruel even. (lots of male comments can be screened due to them just sucking up to the female posters, but not all ) Fat kids used to be teased in school, now the thin ones are - I don't think that's a good trend. I'd rather the focus was on fitness and nobody got teased for their form at all. But just moving the teasing to a different form/shape is sad. I'm also sad to see kids and teens in terrible shape. Again, their shape is a result, but the lack of health is the sad part. I think, except for those insecure in the first place, most people have a clear picture of reality vs fashion modeling and your magazine examples is a bit of a moot point - they are just selling what people are buying. What's disturbing, is that the opinions are so extreme and sometimes PC- blind as to be comical. hey, she's thick - so what hey, she's a stick - so what etc etc etc different strokes is just fine with me - we all have our preferences and it's silly to mock anyone just because they have one different than what PC or otherwise ...
