How to resprond to accidentally dislodged reserve handle
rehmwa replied to rhopstr's topic in Safety and Training
Had it happen once a long time ago. Friend pointed to it and I saw it floating. We were pretty high up, so I just put it back in the slot and pinched the velcro. Finished the dive. If I was lower, I'd have held the handle and the webbing together at deployment. Re-pocket it under canopy. ... I've borrowed two. The XL I 'thought' fit just fine. but it fogged like crazy - even after exit I did one four way pretty much blind the whole dive. It went well. - I did everything NWFlyer recommended - still no good. I borrowed a L from a friend and found that it fit near my mouth and nose much snugger and allowed me to just breath through my mouth. They actually seem to be sized pretty small. AND, they have a lengthy break in period. A new L is very tight and not comfy at all for me. But once broken in, it fits me very well. Something to think about or see if others have discovered the same. ... I don't watch skydiving movies with Skydivers. The skydivers turn into annoying little commentary bitches with complete inability to just shut up and enjoy the fictional entertainment. same goes for watching any activity themed movie with someone who's an advocate of the activity - especially if they are newbies. Edit: the only true exception is the Fandango scene - that's classic and skydivers actually appreciate the thing and are more fun to watch it with than wuffos. (also the original "Proof") ... That is the problem with you people. If Mitt paid at the same rate I do, the extra revenue could be used to pay off the national debt! for that matter - "scholarship" should be a merit based term. Else it's called "charity" I'd rather pay off the debt. But if money is used for higher education, I'd prefer it go to smart kids, regardless of affluence or lack thereof. ... Then why aren't the parents just pitching in, thus bypassing the city government. In the end, the money comes from them anyway. This way they cut out the middleman. (OOOPS - that would be too much like the parents choosing their own kids' education. Or even, school choice.) Too bad the teachers don't have the option to go work in a private school where competition would allow the best teachers to make the best pay and benefits. yeah, ...... that would suck ... It sucked, IMHO... We just ran it finally. It took two different weekends. It's a good draw for practicing the slow stackups. And the last rounds are most 'pointy'. Nice combo. It's the slowest 10 round draw we've done this year. 15 of the 16 blocks (all but 18). And only 12 of the 16 randoms (4 left over) ... I disagree. They both admit it. They REVEL in it. It's the prime foundation of their platforms to demonize the other guys and then say "We're not them". So much easier than trying to do something good. Hell, Mitt is running the fact that he's not Obama. Obama is still running on the fact that he's not Bush. ... 1 - no logbook 2 - said my arch wasn't "good" and that I was "too stiff and tense" 3 - said I didn't "look" comfortable enough 4 - same signal the entire dive - "main side instructor was still slamming the arch signal over and over in my face and shaking his head no" 5 - "I didn't even pay attention to if the instructors had an instruction" - one thing we look for every jump is that the student is aware and taking instruction (shows he's not in sensory overload). That might be why the signal just kept coming again and again.....I just don't know there's a lot here I'm finding distressing about the portrayal of the instruction you received both in air and on the ground - I'm wondering if maybe you should reset and sit with your instructors and talk it out more before putting such a negative picture out here of the instruction you are getting. I'm having a hard time swallowing this account as written. that said - tunnel time is a great way to get comfy for the rest of the freefall portion of your jumps. But so is a good Cat C as well. Tunnel is a great tool, but we've trained a LOT of people without. I rarely get the opportunity to give an arch signal without some additional leg trimming signal first that will allow the arch to be more effective (typically narrower knees and/or legs out (sometimes taps), THEN arch). YMMV Arching super hard will not fix potato chipping. So the two observations "arch better" (interpreted incorrectly as arch "harder") and "relax" are really in conflict until you are trained what they mean by "arch better" A better arch is best achieved by "relaxing into it". Not just "Hammer" out the arch. A good arch can be more comfortable, not more effort. ... My wife has done them. And all of Mike's comments are correct. If these are for specific and serious flyers - then these are more difficult that suits for grown ups to get booties and torsos to fit just right. they have to be dialed in very well - local builder is an excellent choice unless the buyer is just looking for something like what the tunnel has for the general walk-in crowd - then they might be easier to make those - they are just reinforced coveralls with special closures - then it would just be colors and logos - likely much easier. ... not so - it appears the casino offered to pay up the rest of the chips. But now the gamblers want to get MORE than the remaining payout the gamblers appear to be suing for extra for "unlawful detention" (by the police, yet they sue the casino????) and with an added race card offense to sweeten the pot.....??? apparently $1.5M is not enough - more like $5M apparently is the magic number disgusting - Now it's turned around and the casino appeared to do the right thing and now the gamblers are being greedy 1 - Casino should pay 2 - Casino should sue the card vendor 3 - Gamblers should have spoken up when noticing the cards - not legal, but morally the right thing to do 4 - Gamblers should still get the winnings despite being slimey 5 - Gamblers upset about the incarceration? they should sue the police at this point, the gamblers are coming across as asswipes - or at least their lawyers certainly are ... this is code for "paying the minimum legal amount" right? key word being 'Legal' as something defined vs 'Fair' as nonsense subjective fluffery so if the issue is about the tax law, why attack individuals that are following the law? It was that irresponsible concealed carry holder. If he would have NOT had that gun, he would have had room for his cell phone. Then he could have called the cops. I think the real hero here is clearly the 'school district officer'. A clear product of our social government and public union system, he was available immediately to counsel the misunderstood Mr. Barron for the trauma of having to actually see a gun and to be assaulted by the CCH pointing the killing object in his general direction. I'm sure the gun is currently in jail, and the CCH is being retrained on proper thinking and sensitivity. (For those that need it, here's a smiley icon - ) ... Something went wrong on my AFF 1 Jump???
rehmwa replied to Sharksblood's topic in Safety and Training
you're kind of a know it all for such a brand new jumper in the sport. 300 jumps is really just an infant in the sport yet. I hope you're learning more here opposed to just sounding off on multiple subjects. We can't give the AFFI's a pass. But I think without the video and the info from the jumpmasters directly, just a cavalier comment bashing them is pretty ignorant. To the OP - much of the time, those super fast AFF Level falls are a combo of a 'brick' body type that also has his legs on his butt the whole time - they can really move - fall rate and backslide combined. Though this may or may not be part of your experience, feet on butt is pretty normal, and hopefully your instructors observed enough to be able to do better next time and for you to also do better next time. It takes a lot of character for them to own it enough to put it in the logbook and offer up another jump like they did. I hope they still took all the possible opportunities to teach during and after the jump. We had a featherweight AFF student here a couple years ago and it took a LOT of work and equipment optimizations, etc, to stick with the guy. He's now an excellent jumper. You will be too. I get anvils all the time also. They are nice as they tend to stay belly to earth Not everyone is average build, weight and height. Armchair quarterbacking that makes cracks for anything even slightly short of perfection is about as juvenile as it comes and we see it from a lot of posters on an anonymous website. FF skills do come in handy, but there's a lot less leverage for anyone that's not super skilled in the disciplines. There's very few students that a flexible instructor can't handle while on his belly - but total body flight does teach one to use the airflow even better in this and other orientations (I'm a big fan of all jumpers learning multiple freefall disciplines, even more for potential instructors to have that experience. I'm also a big fan of FF only types that disdain advanced belly skills to stay away from instruction ratings.) ...
