Tipping (for any activity) is voluntary. Asking for the "norm" is a non starter. Tip if you like, or buy the staff a few pizzas, or take them out to dinner or drinks, or not at all. I'm sure it's appreciated. I've done all of these at one time or the other, but I've never felt it was some kind of "duty" or out of an idea to figure out what's 'fair'. The contract has always been clear, anything beyond that was not expected and purely voluntary. I've never met a good instructor that sandbagged or gave poor service until he got a tip. They are top notch. At least those I've dealt with. Philosophy - For any job - I'd much prefer that people just get paid what the market indicates rather than employers hiding their extra costs in some contrived social norm. Be it food service, haircuts, whatever. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

Are gas taxes idiocy? Cigarette taxes? Liquor taxes? Hunting licenses? Fishing licenses? Those are revenue streams that help pay for the costs associated with those activities. No different than an ammo tax. no....in reality, those are 'revenue streams' (stop right there). collected money is collected money - to fool ourselves into thinking that collecting for a single purpose has zero effect on the total burden to society and the costs of running a government is naive at best ... In liberal-land that IS an injustice. He should have given it to the Treasury. Government is MUCH better able to choose where those donations go. (However, I think quoting charitable contributions in a 'how much is he taxed' discussion is a complete non sequitor. Charity should not offset a tax responsibility - the fact that it's deductible confounds that position, but my position on deductions, exceptions, exemptions, penalties, credits is pretty clear) ... The problem with your post was that you criticized impugning conjured motivations by impugning conjured motivations. The point tends to be lost by criticizing an ad hominem attack with an ad hominem attack. How do you point out that an argument is based on nothing but racism without calling the author a racist? Your criticism makes no sense. How do you point out that a poster is calling an author racist who uses racial points to call out a politician is being racist by using racial bias to gain racial points for strictly political gain without calling everybody a racist that doesn't jump to the pre-approve PC dogma? Your critism doesn't make sense. I submit that the author is racist. But I submit that the President is also racist in a much more direct and societally harmful way. In other words "it took one to know one" I glad the generations are growing out of it. ... or, perhaps, he put out his "opinions" in such a clear way without the typical insults and vitriol, that those opinions were respected by those that both agreed and disagreed with him. So no point in "rebutting" something usually based on subjective philosophy. I RARELY see any posts here where people say "I understand you, I just don't agree" (Wendy and Keely are pretty decent about it, so was Nightengale. Amongst a few others) ... The entire piece is about race. WTF else is there to say about it? If you've been dealt a handful of racist cards you can't just magic a different one from out of your sleeve. edit: (changed) Whether Wheeler is a raging racist, or the most fairminded person in the history of the world, I think there's a depth to plumb here about the article, and about what's being said. You can oversimplify and play the card, or see what unfolds. So glad everything is so "black and white" for you. ... I see where you get that. no problem. I found it a bit over the top also, in 'defining Obama's race' but then on a 2nd look, it's really about how Obama is choosing to define himself for political points and how that's not sincere when compared to reality. I mean, when Obama defines himself by race to score points, how do you point out the hypocrisy by not level setting reality vs the image he is attempting to portray. (with that, the piece, to me, is pointless because I get a bit tired of the name calling. I don't find it racist so much as name calling - in fact, he's calling Obama a racist, and an opportunist using racism to advance. So it's just a childish name calling of "he's a hypocrit".) In reality, pointless. If both sides would stop trying to win games of "gotcha" coupled with who can be the most insulting and snarky - and then just talk policy and philosophy, the voters would be best served. race is cosmetic only, color blind is a great goal - I'd love it if everyone would just stop trying to cash in on it ... special treatment abounds everywhere progressive tax structures penalties exceptions exemptions mortgage deductions child care deductions educational deductions ad nauseum a little hypothetical math: Guy makes $100K and is taxed at 30% He takes $30K in various deductions - tax on $70K = $21K He has to pay an accountant. Politicians get tons of contributions and votes from the ignorant and not so ignorant for putting in all these deductions and exemptions and credits, etc etc etc alternatively: Guy makes $100K and is taxed at 21% with no special perks - tax = $21K (oh crap - the math does work, it's revenue neutral) the left screams bloody murder - "OH MY GOD, you gave RICH Guy a 9% tax reduction - you're a racist and a sexist creep" the right screams bloody murder - "OH MY GOD, you took away all the TAX BREAKS that encourage small businesses - you hate the little guy just wanting a home and a business" REALITY - politicians lose power because they don't have any special freebies to hand out. And a few accountants lose some business. no way a simple tax code will ever work .......but I digress - what were we talking about? ... I agree with you. But I was just turned off by GDan's knee jerk race card dealership. the level of political laziness and strawmanship lately is just painful. For example, the public was most excited about the ad hominem exchanges from Pres Debate #2 and Joe Biden assholishness in the VP debate; but least excited about the actual facts and philosophies shared by the two candidates in Pres debates #1 and #3. The "reality TV" intellect of the normal voter is really exposed - saddening and frustrating ... Interesting PBS article on healthcare costs and outcomes

So it is easier for the Doc to prescribe and they get benefits in return. Indeed, the doctor plays no role in this at all. no need to strawman this - I agree with you too. But I want to emphasize that our health is OUR own responsibility first and foremost. Ditching the blame to 'anyone else', even the doctor, is a non-starter IMO. ... via the government, other taxpayers pay for his medical treatment - he chooses to take medication to make the symptoms tolerable so he can continue to make horrible and unhealthy choices he pays for his own medical treatment - he eats better tries not to be grossly obese and takes care of himself better It's not the doctor's fault, it's the economic support structure's fault. Good intentions with crappy results - it's a theme. (unless the 'results' have nothing to do with health and only about 'buying' votes from the greedy and ignorant - then the 'results' are great) ... Candy Crowley Admits Romney Was Right About Libya

It's always one sided in Quade-world. Not surprised. yes - "act of terror", and then they blamed the video for two weeks, had the guy arrested on trumped up charges, and then changed back to the original story when it got hot and visible. Candy Crowley Admits Romney Was Right About Libya
rehmwa replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
absolutely - he said "act of terror" but we all know he didn't, at the time, intend for it to mean an organized terrorist attack. He pulled a John Kerry (or a Mitt Romney if you like) only when that became politically expedient. the only other explanation is he told the truth at first and then switched to the video excuse and then flipped back in otherwords, he said it was, before he said it wasn't, before he said it was pick one ... Candy Crowley Admits Romney Was Right About Libya
rehmwa replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
no one will answer that - if they did, they'd have to admit that the whole argument really is just political posturing by both teams. If the right would stop playing the semantics game and just get down to the real point, they'd do much better. the real argument is not the verbage, an 'act of terror' can be pre-planned or it can be sparked violence in protest of a video. So the quote is meaningless to the point being made and it's silly of the president and the left to try to use that, and they know it's weak bait. the point is that this was a planned assault, and blaming a video for a couple weeks when they knew all along it was really a planned assault is what's being put forth they knew it was a planned assault right away, claiming it was simply a response to a video was a really stupid political ploy that didn't have to be played, and then later pretending it was a 'big surprise and hey it ACTUALLY WAS a planned assault' is poor theator at best. so the semantics that "act of terror" = "planned terrorists attack" is just a lie. Frankly, had they just admitted it was a planned terrorist attack, I bet Obama could have gotten a LOT of public sentiment and support. The Dems REALLY blew a big political opportunity by just doing the right thing up front. They'd likely have, in one stroke, have put a ribbon on the election - and for the right reasons. Instead, they let their social biases force a two week lie and screwed up big time. they had no reason to even try the 'it's the video' gambit - I have no idea WHY they did even ...
