It's hilarious, and probably a mockery of lots of people, including the president, who would take credit also if it started raining again ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

Sunday's report: USPA BOD meeting
rehmwa replied to MikeTJumps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I didn't say I was for that also, I just said it was the bigger bull in the china shop. there's three types of people: 1 - those that don't do the right thing (or at least believe that of others) unless they are forced to - they think structure and regulation is the right thing to do to force the nitwits to act right. And that makes sense for them. They truly are trying to save everybody else. I'm grateful for them. 2 - those that do the right thing regardless (or at least believe that of others) - they don't think the absence or presence of formal structure and regulation really makes a difference and consider it a waste of time. They figure the nitwits are nitwits regardless and most can't be saved and don't want to be anyway. And that also makes sense for them. I'm sympathetic to this, mainly because I see tons of impotent rules and laws given constant obliviousness in everyday life and in our sport. (seriously, if you're at a dropzone where people won't even wipe off the ketchup from the picnic table at night, do you really expect these people to choose to follow a rigorous certification program?) 3 - those that would do the right thing, but they don't really know what it is (or think that of others) - they cry "education, not regulation". Very forgiving crowd. They don't believe in nitwits, just ignorance that can be fixed. I tend to fall in the 2nd camp - however, I also see a lot of nitwits that clearly rationalize the position of the first camp. Having standardized training, I think is nice, it gives us a nice baseline to teach from rather than having to make it up from scratch. But it allows the curriculum nazi/lawyer types to become annoying jackasses. but that's just me. I'm happy just to see the dialogue - if we get the visibility out there, maybe some really good and caring mentors will step up at the personal level and really make a difference in a few newbies. (with or without any new rules) (IMHO - what we are hoping for is a culture change - I just don't think rules do that, I think smart and caring people do that and it takes time - IMHO) ... I've stopped trying: irate "We must cut military spending" other guy "I agree. While we're at it, we should cut everything" irate "WHAT? why won't you cut military spending?" other guy "I agreed with that, what are you talking about?" irate "You hate babies and old people, we need to cut military spending" other guy "I agree with cutting military, and suggest we go after every other budget too" irate "you are stupid and hate minorities, if you won't cut military spending, I can't educate you" this is just painful to read every week edit: and then it gets funny, and after a few more repeats, it get painful again, but then after even more, it's funny again ... I do find it odd that wingsuiting would be the discipline being chosen to spearhead this. If they want to open that can - seems there is a different and obvious discipline that should have been chosen first to be the test case to see how the membership reacts to this type of proposal. ... only because your team won't get out of the way (whichever team that is) No, it's your team. No, it's my team. No, it's your team ... Okay, now that we've got that out of the way we can move on with the discussion. Look over there - a big fluffy cloud towering to 12K from 3K..... ----> ... 100% - get enough people that feel strongly about something, anything, and enough weirdos will collect and organize into something stupid. And someone power hungry will exploit them be it religion, political enthusiasm, enviromentalism, profits, sports, scrapbooking (recall the huge paper cut massacre in NY last spring), etc etc etc ... I am not basing a presidency on slogans. I'm just attempting to show that the two sides of the same coin (Democrats and Republicans) use (meaningless) slogans and statements to rally the (ignorant) masses ... see, now you just opened the old series of "hell no, MY side isn't ignorant. Only the other guys are. That's the problem, the OTHER guys are the ONLY reason we aren't living in a paradise - it's perfectly understandable since they are pure evil. My philosophy is perfect and wonderful and we shit rainbows" ... it demonstrates the power of the human mind over our physiology placebo - or just a tool of self control - meditation - yoga - Biofeedback techniques - you seem to care what they "call" it "biofeedback" vs "faith healing" - even if the exact same physiological processed - I find it amusing that it's admirable if a child survives a deadly disease by one, but he's a moron if he survives by the other and should have died results matter - a rose by any other name ... Great, so one should show ID before using the right to free speech as well? I hope not, but that's what big left wing labor unions want - if you don't, how do we know who's house to burn or who's kids to intimidate? it's kind of weird that all these issues have analogous reversals (no it's not, it's pretty predictable) ... why is this discussion only relegated to some poster's stereotype about what a christian is or thinks? that's stupid - I suspect christian's are probably just as diverse in opinions on the death penalty as any other randomly defined group. as for this specific case - does the IQ of the criminal matter at all? my criteria would be the willingness and likelihood of them repeating the crime. ... I think this attitude is a real symptom of why there is so much conflict on social issues. IMO - it's a clear symptom of at least an inability to separate intellectual understanding vs emotional understanding. I think it's a big component in very intolerant individuals. At the least, it's something you see in people that like to open an issue with "how would YOU feel if you were in their shoes?" Understanding does NOT equal: acceptance, agreement, advocacy, allowance, etc etc etc I do believe there can be understanding without requiring a visceral and emotional validation component to it. In other words - I'd feel the same way as that guy were I in his shoes. But i wouldn't have taken the same actions. (i.e., I understand and am still capable of disagreeing) ... that's a good point - the normal definition of "surplus" is based on a periodic (annual) position of taking in more than we budget to spend. Thus, we can be in debt, but still have (an 'annual') surplus. your position, I believe, is a philosophy that this equates to poor planning - if we have achieved this net positive position, we should be taking this theoretical surplus and use it to pay down the total debt. In other words - we should never have a budget that shows a surplus if we retain any long term debts that we could pay to principal on with the leftover. On a personal level, this is an odd way to look at it. If you budget to make your house payments and all your other obligations and wishes, and then, at the end of the year you have money leftover. I'd call that a surplus. Even though I still owe on my house (and have a plan to pay for it over the next several years). You're saying that you can't call it a surplus if you haven't paid off the house.... I get it, I just don't see how it aids in this discussion to hijack the term to your personal philosophy (however, I wish the congress would take your philosophy to heart - which I think is your real message) frankly, I like the idea of a government that pays as it goes - they shouldn't be taking out mortgages (analogy) ... now it's getting ridiculous - it's just driving up the cost of tractors if we do that, then only the RICH can afford tractors - that's the true goal of this movement - to keep the little guy down what we need to do is tax the rich even more - and then use that money to provide anyone with less that $250K income with FREE tractors it's only fair ...
