the client base is pretty clear don't you think? just because the client base is broad and inferred, doesn't mean we do it in the most twisted and expensive way possible..... ... I've never seen that. Usually it meeting someone. "what do you for a living"..."I'm a cop"..."how about that, thanks very much for your service" it's part of an interaction, not a source of interaction but either way, I'm not annoyed if someone feels that way - not that big a deal. People are allowed to think and act differently than me. I'm gracious that way ... You must hang around assholes. I always thank the nurse and doctor at visits For that matter - I also try to make a point to show appreciation to my team members here at work. I purposely try to thank support staff regularly and randomly here at work also - (our admins, the security guy at our entrance, the guy that cleans our toilets). Seems it would nice to be acknowledged more than just once a year during performance appraisals - even by strangers. But I do consider law enforcement and firefighters and servicemen to be people that I'll always just say 'thanks for serving'. It's not a big deal and just casual in introductions. But a bit different to the other items where I just consider it decent to considerate to others. Dekker calls it 'adoration', I don't get that idea that just being nice is something over the top......, courtesy and appreciation isn't that difficult and it's a little thing but much appreciated. Unless they're assholes, then I just ignore them. really, what's the harm? ... so as asked already, do you have a viable alternative? Since you asked twice, I have to assume that the first was apparently wasn't just a pointless rhetorical question like I thought, so: not at all - Have I pretended to offer one? so what - Isn't discussing the overall underlying philosophy of how government works a good enough goal in a discussion forum where we don't actually set policy for the world? Or are you on a city council somewhere? Do you always have a perfect solution for everything you bring up here? However - If you want to extend that, one could infer a lot of ideas, wacky or not: a straight fee based structure, or charging every resident a flat fee rather than scaled to income or property ownership, or a pay as you go (which IMHO is a non starter), or literally scaling every purchase to income, not just fees, sales tax based government revenue, etc etc etc. But that's great for those that want to get bogged down in those discussions. But not for me. I'm just pointing out the inherent inequity of the structure that charges families different amounts for equivalent services, even including services that some never use at all. If government was run like a business (needed products for a competitive price) maybe we'd have some kind of fair trade. But in reality, that's not what government does - it's about accumulation of power by individuals using the power of law to take from some and give to others where sometimes the giving is counterproductive to true societal health but still allows the accumulation of power by giving a false appearance of benefit to some. It's a giant randomizer combined with pure end result advertising. Rarely do we see the good of all in the mix, just the illusion for those sheep that refuse to look deeper than the bare cosmetic trimmings. Just look at all the manuvering that goes into a community needing a simple bridge fixed - first, two equally balanced sides in the local gov divide up and fight it like it's armageddon. That's ensures everyone on the issue has someone to vote for. Then half fight to budget it while the other half fight to add taxes (power) to cover the extra. After a great fake battle (on how the bridge will bring peace and order to the galaxy vs the end of mankind), the inevitable taxes arrive. then, they overspend by twice as much - pretty much every project. then someone gets a sweetheart deal to add "art/culture" to the bridge with decorations that "represent" some wacky cultural thing. Then when the project is done, the taxes stay on. This type of procedure doesn't strike cynicism into your heart? If so many dems and reps in congress weren't such complete idiots, or even worse, clearly extreme and unreasonable fanatics - I'd just assume they were all on the same side and this is all staged for the masses. ... tough call but it would be better than increasing revenue by an impotent amount and simultaneously increasing spending by even more that that ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

By my math, about 355 other members of the House. Yup - one good point, we start to be able to sort out politicians that can work together from the partisan nutbags. Worst case, we get to know who to toss out in 2 years. (i.e., the "hard liners" from both teams) If we're lucky - maybe the Senate member will also show their true colors in the issue too ... That'll happen at about the same point as the hardliners on the Republican side take a step too. actually good point - I meant to indicate Dems of an analogous bent on the topic of spending reform (particularly entitlements). for the exact same services, so you are NOT paying for your usage of the services (in terms of fire and police, I do concur that 'using' the service includes just having it available - I pay for fire department even if I never have a fire....I don't want someone to knee jerk to that blind alley) it's no different than Kelpdiver with his Million dollar home and me with my 100K home and we both go to the store and Kelp pays $10 for a gallon of milk, and I get to pay 50 cents for the same gallon that's not really true, though it does admit the real intent - and it's not usage ... but it's not by usage, is it? you own a $500,000 home and I own a $100,000 home, and you pay quite a bit more even though you use the same services since the tax is scaled to the audited value of the investment - it's assuming a virtual gain on a static property - they are clearly "taxing on promise" let's not even get into schools being a part of it - that aspect of usage is even more contrived ... so, in short, property taxes of any kind are completely unfair. you should only be taxed when you sell property - not be getting mugged every year it's pretty much an arbitrary method to take money locally from residents ... That's a non-starter - there doesn't have to be an equivalent private sector job, just an alternate private sector career option to set up the supply and demand for employees - the military has roles all the way from unskilled to highly trained and educated.....example - as an engineer, I could work for the military, or any number of private sector industries or companies. I'd really challenge you to find a job in the military where that person has zero options in the private sector sufficient enough to estimate a competitive pay range. goofy - competition would drive the pay scale - they compete for labor like anyone else - people will take the best deal they could negotiate. yawn - good question up to that point, glad you got a partisan jab in. Party stereotypes aside, competent people will take the best deal they can, government can compete in the same market for those employees as everyone else - and pay that much but no more or less.... supply and demand is pretty basic stuff don't you think? I don't understand why people assume a gov job needs to have better (not equivalent) pay and benefits and still assume worse performance ... man with a helmet -.... when did you turn into a bleeding heart liberal? got a little class envy there? what's the point of it? how is this different from some tradesman bitching about how a day trader makes more money than him? Or the technician complaining that the engineering manager also does? I suspect that if the NFL had 10's of thousand of players, then it might be an interesting discussion point in an unrelated thread. (as I said, everyone has their favorites in terms of trying to effect pay or tax preferential treatment, but if you don't look at ALL deductions, credits, etc, (yes, even the ones you like and the ones you can generate a ton of emotional response on) then you are part of the problem. Military is a great example, so are teachers I guess - it's such a tender topic.) Pay isn't about someone's subjective and emotional response to a job role - it's about what the market will pay for someone to do a job - provided they can do the job. it's such a crappy discussion that simply derails reasonable discussion ...
