  2. I agree with Jakee here. Blue helmet "We're the UN and we're here to take your guns" regular citizen "no, what are you gonna do about it?" Blude helmet "er. ....er....er...if you don't, we'll issue a written sanction and bluster in an impotent fashion" ... 3. interesting - if you don't have any other info than he's illegally in the house - you only know a couple things: 1 - they are in your house without your permission 2 - they've proven they will break the law to your detriment why would choose to assume your life (your daughter's life?) is not threatened vs is threatened? hate to make the wrong call when his presence is 100% his fault and clearly against the law in the first place. He's demonstrated his character by being there. If I can safely get my family out without a direct conflict, I'd prefer that. But my assumption is always that an intruder means to do the worst. He's not there to give us christmas presents ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  4. all new laws have one goal - garner more support and votes and donations. So a 'do-nothing, but feel-good' law is considered a success. (Note the productivity of a congress is measured by NUMBER of laws passed, not the net positive effect of laws passed) (the few fanatics, of course, are just pushing their brand of social philosophy, but I suspect they are in the minority of all congressmen) I actually believe that the only sincerity in DC is the fanatics (scary isn't it), the rest are out for power. Exceptions few and far between and quickly indoctrinated once identified. ... 7. good at math? How many guns are there in pure existence? How many guns have been used in murders? is the percentage significant enough to be treated proportionately? if you "GREATLY reduce" the total out there, what do you think the odds are that you'd get that giant number of guns from bad guys - or would you just take a ton of guns from just law abiding people? I suspect if you find a town with 1000 guns and 2 people that used 2 guns and committed 2 murders - go back in Billvon's time machine and GREATLY reduce the guns in town - like over half. You'll end up in a town with 500 guns and 2 people that used 2 guns and committed 2 murders. now, find a town with 2 bad guys and go back in time and GREATLY reduce the number of bad guys - say by half. Now you did something cool. and you have a town with 999 guns, 1 bad guy, and only 1 murder. you have to find the bad guys, not the inanimate objects - work on that and we'll have a real solution smart guys work on root cause - not symptoms or 2ndary inputs ... 8. I don't believe I said anything about passing more useless laws. I did say that the fact that unenforceable useless laws are on the books shouldn't be used as a reason to censor discussion of things that might work. Discussion does not equal passing laws; it might be that nothing can be done, within the constraints of the 2nd amendment, or it might be that relaxing existing laws might be useful. For example if it can be shown that sanctions applied after a diagnosis of mental illness are deterring people from seeking treatment, maybe those sanctions can be reduced or modified so people will seek treatment. It's not like you to put words in people's mouths. reread my note again and try it without a cynical twist - in essence, I was celebrating and happily agreeing with all of that you were implying. and after your clarification, even more so. and, yes, it is reasonable to assume my notes with cynical and amused tones. But not this time - you comments there were pretty darn decent. take a look at my patterns I quote and post more in agreement than disagreement. Mostly it's just mockery. ... 9. yay! more useless laws are silly, enforcing laws that were useless for the same reason is silly. Scrub the laws and get rid of the empty/symbolic ones, find those that can be enforced and do so. See if there is a better set of enforcible ones to assess. more is not better, even if it's the most expeditious and gets votes from a spun up public (I find the news report that the last congress was the 'least effective' based on they passed the fewest laws in a long time to be very distressing. quantity doesn't equal quantity) ... 11. and it's tough to debate when the starting points for one group: Group 1 - ---Loss - ability to protect yourself and your loved ones: right to private property ownership: respect of the law abiding individual and assumption that a good citizen will do what's right without law: government one step closer to total dictatorship ---Gains - nearly nothing, some people feel better but are really in worse shape vs Group 2 - ---Gains - significant reduction in crime and murder and violence. perhaps a happier and more cooperative society where people take care of each other and walk around unafraid of others. More vegetarians is a bonus too ---Loss - some rednecks I don't even like won't get to shoot ammo into the sky at his wedding In the end, it seems both teams only do take the absolute view - total bliss gained at the cost of inconsequential tripe. It's the essence of political debate. It's quite funny. ... 12. I don't think it's reasonable to just blithely throw out that aspect of the discussion at all. It very key in terms of a position that holds the individual responsible for how they act - no matter how they accomplish it. That 'speculation' is a very real set of scenarios and not just blink speculation. Other than that, I agree that the real argument is trading off the 'worth' of the perceived benefit to the imagined losses. However, that particular speculation is part of how we quantify the 'gains' that you want to weigh against the losses. Hell - All of these arguments boil down to the subjective value of the perceived gains and losses. All of them. ... 21. absolutely - So were the Bush Tax Cuts, but look at the brew-ha-ha around that particular topic. Wasn't there something in the news about that lately? as for the payroll tax holiday itself - still we see the outrage from the working people for both dems and reps and (the third group of people with sense). They kinda snuck that one in there, didn't they? Surprised a lot of partisan wackos all over the country too. I think it's neat - the government can simultaneously claim they raised and maintained (or lowered under funny gov math rules) taxes on everyone. It's more fun to say they raised and lowered taxes simultaneously. everyone's a winner!! ...
