Why Pro and Anti-Gun Advocates Are Not Speaking The Same Language
rehmwa replied to Dean358's topic in Speakers Corner
my brother throws that one out all the time "half the people in the world are below average" and then he uses that as proof for discussions why others don't deserve rights if you realize that like 90% of people actually 'believe' they are above average and thus gifted enough to make decisions for the 'stupid half' of the population, it becomes clear why legislation and rights violations are so popular and out of control ... Why Pro and Anti-Gun Advocates Are Not Speaking The Same Language

and if any of you had been trained and were responsible with guns, it would have been a simple matter of requesting the gun and "teaching" him what you meant by checking the chamber and why that's also part of safety in addition to removing the magazine instead, you ran and left an idiot alone with a potentially loaded gun I'd would state that this isn't right or wrong, I don't know your age at the time. But knowledge instead of ignorance is still better at any age on this topic - and there's just a lot of ignorance and they are in charge the culture has moved from people with knowledge and experience teaching responsibility to their kids to just a culture of fear - maybe there's a part of the program ... if eagles were vegetarian, then the poor fish would be safe further, if you eat fish every day, then you have a mercury accumulation issue to deal with, so not surprising that eagles that follow Michelle's eating guidelines need to find alternate protein sources further, they need to abstain from eating protected species and also read any environmental impact statements - don't want to over harvest then there's OSHA and dept of health requirements to follow and forms to file Eagles have a rough time - it's a complicated administrative nightmare from the gov for them to deal with perhaps eagles carrying off babies is a cheap way for the public health care to provide for abortion and help support wildlife at the same time? brainstorming is fun ... I like this one (I know it's two items, but they are the same point) about as much as I like telling the rape victim that "she shouldn't have dressed that way" i.e., not one bit - blaming the victim for something the criminal initiates..... ... last night, liked it quite a bit - Bilbo is played to perfection. I like the extra scenes to flesh out the whole story. (Radagast, Council of the Wise, etc etc) The interpretation of Radagast was a bit out there, but fun and ok. bad guys - a bit more Muppetty or Dark Crystally than I like. the interpretations from LoTR was better. But still in keeping with the intent which isn't as dark or serious as LoTR Yes, a lot of scenes dragged out - I didn't mind so much Too much stuff that carries from LoTR (background themes, repeat/rework of similar scenes) - I liked the tribute at first, but it got WAY overdone. Agree with Quade - the book is The Hobbit, not "The Dwarves" - still, nicely done. I think some of the changes from the book made a lot of sense to do that way for a film (Bilbo finding the ring, tree on fire, etc) worked for me. I can see how this can be three movies now, and still done very well. I'd think the pace so far lends itself to 2. So I hope they REALLY expand on Gandalf vs the Necromancer plot a ton - that will be a great story to expand on. ... Ms Levy is pretty forthcoming in providing information from a private job she did for a client. Doesn't sound very professional. If she's giving interviews in hopes of getting some press and more business, I can see how this would backfire bad. ... Glad I read his AFTER my aff lol. the statement "any way" got my goat too. I still plan to pull on time and save myself first. Down to that altitude, absolutely my student is protected as follows: "I'll teach, correct any errors, assist with stability and deployment as best I can." sounds a lot like ufk22, doesn't it? more real, and a lot less romanticized/dramatic than Deisel and Pop's portrayal. but really,,,,, we're all pretty much on the same page if you were to dig into the comments ... agreed, avoid the scenario that compromises you - you can see it in my post. But I answered the scenario presented.. I do think the scenario is a non=starter for reasons stated - I'm focused on the student and if something like two heads conk, I'd be after the student anyway long before I even recognize the other AFFI is knocked out. Other parts come out from the question though on AFFI's - we should have an AAD - we should be doing gear checks on each other as well as the student - we should wear hard helmets - we should realize that each jump has an unpredictable variable in the student and no AFF jump should be treated with complacency be confident, be prepared ... Not if I wish to avoid the problems of California Penal Code section 270.1. And considering that homeschooling was declared illegal in 2008 in this state, um, no. I really have zero choice but to put my kids under their care or someone else will. so the best example for you turns out to be that the philosophy being espoused is really code for talking away your choices in how to raise your own child.... you just have to pick a nice school district - that's about it..... ... Why Pro and Anti-Gun Advocates Are Not Speaking The Same Language
rehmwa replied to Dean358's topic in Speakers Corner
^ this is what I got from it. I was hoping for a rational comparison of points and how each side talks past each other and he even started out in that direction (briefly). But this guy simply noted that HIS OPINION is that only those that consider gun ownership to be a clear right are being close minded. he could be a regular in Speaker's Corner "since you don't agree with me, you must ignorant and close minded" I think the only benefit is that he's showing the problem as a case point himself. Irony, he's trying to come across as enlightened and open minded just to serve as a negative example opposed to that very thing. He's not even trying to understand a perspective of those that lean to individual rights and personal responsibility really shows the divide more so. He considers that compromise = 'that side' come acknowledge that movement to more social position is an improvement. He doesn't even comprehend the idea of a society where decision on this type of issue no business of the feds and should be at the individual level - or least on a local level. It confirms such a clear division of even the starting points of what could be considered the "pure" positions of two sides that it is hard to expect them to come to a workable middle ground. I consider his premise to be only half written and unless he shows the reverse, and then shows the two ideas up next to each other to compare and contrast, then it's just another biased opinion piece. and if he actually did that - so what? we already know it ... When in school, there are others responsible for my kids. If they are not protected I will hold them accountable. is consistent with my comment - as the parent, you choose to place that kid under their care. It's a LOT different than what the president said in his memorial speech. And even MORE different than the current control proposals that actually would severely limit the choices you and your community could decide on to execute on that trust. ... the irony here is amazing the OP isn't proposing something that would eliminate all possible events but the proposal does have two points: 1 - it might actually eliminate 'some' events of the wacko knows someone armed is there. and for the really determined wacko you mention.... 2 - they might help to end the massacre MUCH sooner you'd be better off arguing that the presence of armed protectors (to whatever level of training you might choose - "amateur" all the way to whatever) - might just motivate the wacko to take even stronger precautions. It would still be a weak argument, but at least it's on point. ... Nor did I. I said the theater shooting and the school shooting. oh then your point is moot as the OP didn't suggest going back in time and training and arming teachers and ushers before the events occur. though it's too bad we couldn't. events like these deserve a do-over to stop it before it happens... ... Yep. he doesn't have to run for re-election. Why should he care? I thought the thread was going to be about the speech at the memorial. but it digressed pretty fast. 1 - I think it was a very nice and classy speech for the first 2/3s. sensitive and non-political and caring about the families of the victims. 2 - However, we are NOT responsible for every child. More "takes a village" bullshit. We are responsible for our own families and communities. This type of tragedy is not a Federal issue, it's a local thing for all communities to work through. Federal has a list of things to be responsible for and it''s already way past the line of reason and expectation. 3 - The last bit was political and I was sad to see it move that way. Not the right place for it. Not the right time. He likely insulted or offended (statistically) a third of the families of the the victims (and cheered up another third, and was neutral to the other third). Very crappy choice. He had a great start and should recognize where to stop. 4 - the audience - cripes people, you actually applauded or cheered a speech at a memorial service. Especially one for this horrible event? Seriously? That was very disturbing. I could just see the mourners - they are taking what comfort they could from the speech and the privilege of the POTUS coming and speaking in person, a handful of assholes APPLAUD? then they have to nervously decide if they should go along too....completely tactless. I believe the POTUS cares. I believe that anyone that's not psychotic would care too. Whoever on staff that pushed to leverage this event past that is beyond imagination to me. ... I never said they were. What I said was they are prepared for light gunfire. It's part of their plan. They end their plan when the professionals arrive. You can't say this for all scenarios. If they plan to suicide at the end, they'll do it when they can't take any more victims. So that happens when it happens, whether it occurs due to the presence of professionals or any other reason. ...
