  1. actually, I think clubs are they are just a more scary club if you put a folding handle on it, or a bayonet at least a dumbass can't really hold a club sideways - but if he did, it's less likely to jam (jamb?) ... 2. Home budgets are crappy analogies, but the whole "go ahead and spend because that program is a tiny part" is a lot like this: "John got laid off and money is tight. However, we still go out to restaurants 5 nights a week. It doesn't matter since the mortgage and the car payments are the biggest items and a few steaks and lobsters won't make a dent compared to them" ... 3. you can stop strawmanning at me Dekker. It's about balance - and it's pretty clear on which side of the balance equation I lean towards. you guys are so black and white on stuff it is really difficult at times I'll check in later to see if you people all solved all of life's problems here. Fun discussion. have a good weekend ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  4. I think social manipulation is a lot like golf. Whatever you think the affect will be from an action, we are all probably exactly backwards. Lots of good intention social programs that absolutely have made whatever situation they were trying to improve, just a LOT worse in the long run. (ie. short term thinking rarely fits in with long term effects) You want the ball to go left? guess what - to curve it left you have to swing right. You want people to be better off? If you help them too much, guess what happens? And when it gets emotional - the only solutions are black and white and we lose that balancing act needed to actually make happen what we want to - instead of making it worse. ... 5. Your last point appeals to my natural cynicism on the topic. Not sure how to affect that item. But your topic points seem to be interesting sociological discussion that, seems to me, would lead to a lot of vague validations of peoples subjective social biases, but don't really address or lead to solutions. Just opportunities for social manipulation - not a good track record there, usually just good intentions with worse results. In otherwords, interesting discussions that will inevitability devolve to more emotional arguments because they won't go anywhere else. I like the idea of discussing hard points - especially details as to what is proposed and the perceived effectiveness of them. 7. I got it perfectly clearly. If you see past your assumptions about me, you'll see I understood what you were doing and note it was reasonable since Marc opened that door. I like you just fine, though I find you a bit unnecessarily grim and contentious in the forums, no more than that. I find that to be a bit silly. It has to hold up to all analogous scenarios. I can extend any analogy to the point of ridiculous on any debate and prove or disprove. That's why we call them strawmen. You two are just pissing on each other's legs, IMO. ... 8. I always thought a clip was a device that held rounds in a ready to load format. You can use a clip to load either an internally structured or independent magazine. i.e., when actually shooting the weapon, the clip isn't attached or present in the assembly (take the clip, the rounds come off of the clip to more efficiently load the weapon's magazine, clip goes in pocket, magazine goes in weapon (if not already inside) - weapon is loaded) Sometimes a clip is as simple as a thin metal track that a row of ammo waits on - they can be pushed off of one end into whatever is then used to feed the weapon. A "quick-loader" likely qualifies as a type of 'clip'. The magazine is a round feeding device either integral to the weapon or independently inserted/exchanged. the magazine needs to be present in the weapon during operation if more than just one shot is required. If I'm wrong, I'm always willing to learn. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  9. that's his point - you'll discount the bomb, and he'll claim that he can then discount the hammers - a pissing contest on who has the most outrageous strawman is really silly ... 10. I don't need to stick up for Wendy, but I don't see Wendy advocating for, or against, a ban here. I do see her trying to get to some kind of discussion point worth talking about. All this while you and Dekker try to talk about weird extrapolations and get nowhere - (normal Speaker's Corner SOP). (If you want to extend to hammers to make a point (valid, IMO) then he can certainly extend the other way (though something like a cannon would be analogous, nukes is too far a stretch IMO). Then it's just a discussion of context - which is a valid debate) I'd seriously take her earlier attempt at clarification and try to discuss the pros/cons of the thought that smaller mags would make a difference. (she also noted this was debatable and didn't offer a position either way) I'd contend they won't - with police response times in the minutes, and the time to swap a mag in the seconds, combined with a very passive victim set. the idea that smaller mags would have any impact on a defenseless group of victims just seems to be pointless. If fact, I could easily see a crazy bring 5 or six mags with 9 (?) rounds in them since he couldn't find a single 20 round mag in the store anymore. ... 12. Similar story. It ended with me taking my straight skis to a used sports equipment store. I got maybe 3 steps inside when the guy at the counter looked at my old (top of line - previously) skis and just said "don't bother, nobody will want those now". You know you got old when nobody even wants your old sports gear. ... 16. it also seems easier to absorb air through my skin on hotter days (for breathing in freefall) this question is one about the variability of a very minor factor in freefall speeds - the first question should really be "does the variability in air density even have enough effect to overcome the natural variability of freefall speeds" - i.e., colder air = more resistance = slower terminal v with all other things held constant - which they aren't normally. But is it really even noticable when you realize that all other things aren't held constant from jump to jump, let alone on completely different temperature days? ... 17. So did Reid say that to Boehner's face? Or was it just a cowardly press opportunity to snipe like normal business? Either way deserves a big old "FU". But at least the first would be something real with some minor balls. Also, either way, Reid is an asshat to pretend to be surprised. Perhaps (ironical comment here intentional) he's more concerned about scoring press and political points and holding onto his own gavel, than serving the citizens. ... 18. 1 - I agree with your overall assessment. Thanks. though you're really pulling your punches here - I'd be a bit stronger than just calling Reid "lazy" - much like Boehner, I'd call both of them criminally negligent and destructive - at a minimum 2 - Most CEO's I've been around would pretty much make a regular practice of telling each other off..... but not in such a public way - at least at first. I'm sure there's been more than a few colorful name calling sessions from them both for quite a long time. (It's more refreshing than the PR releases that just infers the other guys is Lucifer incarnate - and the inevitable personal outrage and indignant shock (feigned) in response - just for the media to consume) ... 20. not surprising - what is your personal opinion of Reid then? 21. I don't really care who gets credit for when they eventually make (most) of the tax cuts permanent. If the only way for this set of politicians to do the right thing is to rename them first, go for it. It's already petty. A little more won't hurt. 24. yes - as long as that spending doesn't get spent somewhere else it would be a reduction on the 'spend' side of the budget. every single reduction in spending we do, no matter how small is in the direction of goodness. subsidies and penalties, once removed, the market will balance itself out the idea that food prices will go up, is silly if it's balanced by all of us keeping more of our money - the net/net would be more money that's not funneled through government (and the corresponding 'shrinkage' that occurs). Any time citizens get to keep more money where the government doesn't take a 'cut' is a win for all of us. ... 25. give him a second - You'll get either an argument or an insult. or both (the 'go ahead and carry' is still about mitigation and deterrent. That's one piece (several pieces) of the puzzle - and I, IMHO, think it's a great option to allow districts to choose from and it certainly shouldn't be restricted as an option as individual districts each choose how they want to respond. Now, how about a prevention that's more than just deterrent? That would close the entire picture. It's what we're missing so far and only extreme measures are offered.....) ...
