What would it have been producing prior to that point? look, if two unicorns, a tom cat, a piece of blue ribbon and a bucket of corn meal want to express their love for each other - who are YOU to tell them they can't visit each other on their hospital deathbed? i CAN'T BELIEVE this is pushed to Speaker's Corner - I am so furious ... 5. That sounds like a step in the right direction, though I don't necessarily like how it's limited to use by a minor. If an adult accesses a firearm because it isn't "reasonably secured," and subsequently uses that firearm in a crime, the legal owner should not be without blame. I disagree. I think the common sense test of this is whether you have no issue here as long as it's also applied to all other forms of property. If someone steals your car (you left it at the parking lot at the DZ unlocked) and they use it in a crime, you are also responsible. Ditto that can of rat poison in your open garage that the neighbor stole to poison his wife. This is probably why it makes sense to have it apply in regards to minors - a gun is just another form of property - and it's reasonable to expect people to handle and store any property with a potential for accidental harm in a way to protect ignorant minors from hurting themselves. - our state also has a law requiring firearms to be locked up if there's a minor in the house - GOOD to remind the stupid people of just doing what's right in the first place. I wish they'd extend it to poisons, etc if they think it's needed.... But you really cross the line in assigning blame to the original owner when their property is stolen and then misused by the criminal. The criminal is responsible for his actions. Not you. I'd say it's wise to lock up ANY valuables to make them harder to steal, but legal culpability for criminal use after it's stolen? that's goofy and really is beyond the argument of just negligence leading to an accident. Once someone breaks a law to take your property, your (legal) responsibility really should end. I want people to be smart about it, but i don't think codifying it will raise IQs. {{{I have no real issue with a 'license to purchase' based on a training/safety class - in the manner that davjohns noted. I think it's a great idea since parents don't do this for their kids like they used to, and should do}}} let me ask you a question - if you know a minor (16 or 17) will be in the house, do you hide your car keys? If there's a baby in the house, do you put locks on the cupboard that has cleaners in it? ... 7. this this is a nation of individuals, why are married people treated differently than singles? that's the bigger issue instead of just another demographic wanting the same preferential treatment as another let individuals (privately and contractually) pair up any way they can contract - none of my business once we get tax dollars out of the equation one thing I do find funny is how people on both sides of the social issue try to make this an emotional argument (love, sex, respect, etc etc etc). This is strictly about 'government' marriage - that's strictly about legal benefits - it's a contract and nothing more and nothing less. Everything else is private and none of the government's business and can be done on a personal level. It's silly for the gov to even be involved at all for any kind of marriage. ... 8. you can't just leave it in the car unattended - scary guns have been known to hotwire cars and go speeding down sidewalks. just for kicks. on the plus side - if you leave a gun in the car, it can't whisper crazy stuff to you. only to people walking past the car ... 9. I can't access the clip from work, but didn't she have a tantrum on her racket? That's better than many sports. In hockey, apparently you can lose your temper and swing a stick at the back of someone's head and permanently damage them in a severe way. I believe in that case you don't go to jail, but you might get fined or suspended. (Pick a few other sports as well when crippling and intentional illegal hits or assaults are just kept within the sport) So if we're to be proportional - I suspect damaging just a piece of her personal property would warrant her being given a piece of chocolate cake and a stern glance. edit: short answer - I suspect there are better places to focus energy than on some harmless tantrum by a prima donna ... 13. Nice, good on you both. I'm disgusted with them both. If these two rich guys have so much money that they are just giving it away, then they should have given it straight to the government. or maybe Phil Mickelson. Only the government knows best how to spend that money. Leaving it up to a private individual to spend their own money is reckless spending. 15. I know it's semantics, but it didn't "cost" NY or NYC anything. It wasn't their money to begin with. If they lost an opportunity due to crappy policy, yeah, I agree with that. (I just want to make the point) counting chickens and all that is one of the problems the feds have when looking at tax policy etc - we're better off not falling into that trap in casual conversation. It's predicated on the assumption that gov owns everything and we're lucky to keep what they allow. I'm not a fan of that attitude - no matter how prevalent it might be nowadays. It leads to statements about tax cuts equaling 'spending' - it leads to the idea that an increase in spending below projections can be called a spending 'cut', etc etc etc. it's idiotic... ... 22. How did you know which were licensed dealers and which weren't? Do they all have the same chewin' tobacky? The last FFL dealer I worked with was the grandpa of a skydiver. He has a private collection, and works from his home. he was super competent, very responsible, and I didn't see a Cabela's, or a "Bob's Gun Shop" tattoo on his forehead or anything. that's actually a good idea - if they aren't a licensed dealer, then they get a big "D" tattooed on their foreheads before setting up a table at the show. The D can stand for "Death Dealing Dirtbag". Just so people know. ... Certainly that guy at work that "looks" busy but doesn't accomplish much is promoted right? 1 - I'd rather a Congress passed 4 great laws in a term instead of 400 pieces of PR/impotent and intrusive crap. 2 - This Congress was even better, they likely passed 23 pieces of crap and lost on both counts ... 25. that depends on which "proposed goal" If it's to 'make us all safer from wackos and nutbags' - I don't think it does the job. If it's to 'take away some rights from individuals and give more control to government over our actions' - then it's a win If it's to 'placate ignorant fanatics and create a PR campaign that congress critters can leverage to gain votes from both groups' - then it's a win So - what's the real "GOAL" here? ...
