Yep.. you're right about nice prints coming out of lower res cameras, but my reference to "11 megapixels" was to show the where the technology stands comparitively if all other things were equal. The general manager where i work turns out some really nice large pictures from 2-3 megapixel cameras he has with a program called Digital Ice. You'd be hard pressed to know that they were digital prints v. film processed in traditional ways.

That thread is a good start with all sorts of good info. Something to add though... When it comes to quality. I've found my 3.34 mp Nikon 995 does well for producing full frame 8x10 prints, but not to much larger then that. (it would be way to slow for fast action though... my two cents) but as a reference point, as i've heard from a number of sources, approx. 11 megapixels seems to be the quality a typcial 35mm negative would equal out to for a digital camera. I can't wait until there is a digi Nikon SLR with that kind of resolution to complement my 35mm SLR.

so that's how you got to the new rating??

One of our engineers did the math and I believe he figured out that, at least for broadcast quality, the price gap between hard disk and tape is closing... something like $.40 difference per minute last checked. The biggest advantage I see for hard disks, especially in TV News, is the immediate availibility for editing or transfer. Rather then having to digitize or load it into the machine in real time for NLE editing. I believe the big three networks as well as CNN have downloadable media for their affiliate stations. We use CBS's and CNN's on a daily basis while editing. I downloaded a story that we missed on tape tonight when I edited our 11pm show. Enough babbling from me for now. matt

It seems that that salesman was nothing more then a salesman. They know everything about everything, but don't develope a broad base of information about the trades that shape the products they sell... Sorry, just me griping, but like other stations our chief photog has put in for new DV broadcast cameras, Mini-DV's bigger brother. One of our competing stations just switched to Sony DV ENG cams that will record/playback both DV and Mini-DV. Our other competitor switched to DVC Pro (panasonic crap) that I used while I was in Rochester. I can't wait to use DV on a regular basis. Even our Cheif photog bought one for his outside work. And another photog is looking to do the same soon. Micro-DV = stepping stone to hard disks or a $$ making fad. matt

I know it's cold up in the NE... I live here too. But there has to be more than a handful of people interested in both skiing and skydiving.

ok... I'm planning on going. I've got the time off from work, will be calling for a room. Is there anyone else that's going to be there? matt

One other thing in addition to what Craig said. I've been taught to "unpack" new tapes in another deck before putting them in your camera. As the theory goes any excess particals that may be caught up in the tape will fall out in the deck w/o fouling the heads in your camera if you fast forward it all the way to the end and then rewind it again. From what I understand it works on the tape we use at work b/c the VTRs don't engage the play/record heads while in FF or RW. and something about the way the tape threads laying horizontally or flat so the excess crap just falls off and into the bottom of the machine rather then vertically into the heads of the camera. But I guess not everbody has a spare deck laying around for that purpose.... just my $.02

Just curious... are you using the same tape each time?? or have you tried different ones/new ones. I know at work some types (3M vs. maxell vs. Fuji vs. Sony) of tapes foul certain cameras heads faster and/or show warnings faster then others. That and the snow/cold and other inclemit weather we have here doesn't help much either. matt

thank you mike... it's some great work. matt -
Work..... sensory overload. I try to stay as far away as I can

That sounds like it wouldn't add much more time then dubbing off a VHS copy then. Or is it slower than "realtime" to burn the video? matt

I know everything costs $$$s. How about setting things up in advance? Like my DZ does... it has a stack of pre-leadered tapes with a 4 minute leader (that I think adds to the excitement of watching your jump video and shows some of the other aspects of the sport) and depending upon the video flyer you I've seen between 7-15 minutes for a jump of edited work. Call me a newbie to DVD, because I haven't burned one myself, but can you set up DVDs with everything pre-recorded/burned such as you can by putting the leader on a VHS copy? (similar to the way you can burn a CD, but not close out the session so you can add more later.) Then add the customers' jump(s) to the disc?

ROFLMAO........ Somebody has to start printing these ideas on real shirts. We could have something like the secret santa next year, but everybody would make a "custom" DZ.com shirt for whoever they get.
-
If I'm right a standard DVD+/-R holds about 1 hour of DV footage. (That's what my friend's AVID system lets him fit of uncompressed DV.) So there's lots of extra space so why not add on some extra footage and possibly get the customer excited about the sport with the video? I don't know, but don't many DZs put a stock leader or open on every copy that goes out the door? And that's an advertizement. I just think it would be silly not to take every opportunity you have to expose your customer to the sport while you've got a captive audience. Just my $.02. matt

I hope this part comes off. Otherwise it will be a "Rotating Snag Hazard!"

ok... just finish it off

That's rough... poor cats, it looks painful, and not in a good way. Or is it photoshoped??
