Vegas has illegalized feeding the homeless. Good law or ridiculous?
nanook replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Okay, i'll try again. People have needs. Some people like using Maslow's Hiearchy of needs model to assist. People need food and they have to go somewhere to get it. The more you have to go out of your way to eat, the more inconvienent. Sooner or later, you realize it's easy to stay as close to a food source as possible. then suddenly, the food source moves. Now they have to go to a new source and after that need gets met, they go back to the park. Untill they realize the new food source and park distance is very inconvienent. They find another place closer to food source. Law fixes park problem. Okay, I screwed the pooch on that one. I'm just painting my self in a corner trying to defend that. You can have it. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -

The same way as battling pan-handling; don't give them money, they will go somewhere else. the purpose is to restrict supply from one source. As far as the other source (Soup kitchens ect . . .), there's only so much money the gov't has to spend on certain programs. The loudest, most important priority-sounding program will get the money. If people want more money for the Homeless problem, they have to be louder. Or maybe raise taxes for more revenue. Maybe the people fighting this law should use that huge amount of energy to lobby some funds away from some other program so the homeless has more. Or would that require them to care for the homeless more than themselves and their liberties. I feel that fighting the law is as self-serving as the people who passed it in the first place. The news sources that I have read made the assumption that it was a beautification measure. I didn't see any gov't officials being quoted as saying that. I slapped in "humanitarian" as a possible opposing reason. it was more of a filler. If you have a source that states that the officials said that, show me. I'll read it. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -

Nope, no stirring the pot here. everything I posted is based on my belief that fixing homeless problems means not countering efforts. Battling any problem means working on both supply and demand sides of the causes. Now, whether Las Vegas is trying to fight homelessness for aesthetic puropses or for humanitarian purposes, it still stands that this law will stop supply side causes. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -

In vegas, it's tipping towards the families. You're right. Homelessness won't go away but you can move it somewhere else. You can move the problem to areas where organizations can more effectively help them out, for instance. They are at the parks because being there is the easiest place to be. If you make it harder, they will go to the next easiest place. There are various reasons people are homeless. A lot of them made bad choices in life and aren't making good choices to get back up, a lot have psychological issues. But making it easy for them to be homeless will not help them or help us help them. Some charities reward bad behavior. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -
Howse about an online lesson: If you know how to read music. . .go to a music store and buy one of those laminated charts that have at least 26 basic Rudiments. Learn them all because they will help you greatly. Never stop practicing Borrow a basic bass, snare, high-hat, and ride cymbal and just work on a simple 4/4 beat (80's rock beat). start with a 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, count with the high hat and hit the bass petal on "1" and the snare on "3" (sounds like a familiar ZZTop song). After you get the seperation from your hands and feet, leave the 4/4 beat behind and never look back. Unless you want to only play Scorpions and Whitesnake music (just remember that sooner or later, academics stop reading Go-Dog-Go) Play along with music on your headphones. It will teach you quickly to keep in time. Practice rudiments between times you are not with a drum kit. And most importantly, dont throw the snare all the way across the room. . .it might break. Good luck

I say it's a good law. It was made to prevent the homeless from congregating in public parks. Their numbers have increased greatly over the last decade and people are afraid of taking their families to the parks. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -
The person who quoted this never worked on these aircraft. I've only met two types of 14 mechanics. . .those who hated them and those who had a love affair with them. But they all have said that those planes needed to go years ago. Personally, they were my all time favorite aircraft, but in reality were an equivalent of a Mack truck outfitted to outperform a corvette. Their only specialty after the 18's came out was the fact that they carried the now obsolete Phoenix missiles. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Usually, aftermarket products tend to be inferior and cause dealerships to pay out more on warranties. Personally, I think K & N as more "novelty" than practical. Sure you are going to get it for a lifetiime, but considering most vehicles are rarely kept after 150,000 miles, savings aren't going to break 100 bucks, but you have to do more work. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Looks like they had. Hmmm. . .I wonder if there is an antenna system that could be shaped like a pink flamingo. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Yeah, I have a place in my heart for plastic pink flamingos. My grandmother used to have them in her front lawn. I've heard from friends about good HOA's. Not all of them are bad. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

You have to join if you want to live in that community. They will make you sell and get out if you don't comply. There's plusses and minuses of buying inside those neighborhoods (usually more negatives). My association is a little rabid, but they have taken care of a few eyesores, like those cheezy Direct TV dishes. If I can't put a pink flamingo lawn decorator on my lawn, they better not allow that ugly crap up front. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

What odd/cute behavior does your pet engage in?
nanook replied to windcatcher's topic in The Bonfire
My cat's oddities: sometimes at night, my cat would tweak out and launch itself from the nightstand, jumping over the head of our bed land on the floor on the other side, run around to the night stand and repeat about three or four times. Me and my GF would look up at this as the cat passes over our heads. Kind of like counting sheep. sometimes when my cat looks up at me, her head starts to twitch and wobble on it's long axis as if it was having a fit. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln -
Sorry, I'm not good with the "reading between the lines" thingie. This I agree with. It usually starts with negotiations then leads to war. I think the real reason for this is values, ethnocentrism, cultural bias, ect. . . ect. Also, as long as a sociopath with charisma who knows how to talk to people or give them something to blame their misfurtunes on, there will never be a completed game of chess. We do have a way to go. Unfortunately, it requires similar thinking. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Well, think if it this way. You have the upper hand because the future will tell the reality of a lifestyle. I'm making a big assumption on your character, but I would bet in ten years time, you will have been promoted to a higher position and making a lot more money. The 50" flatscreen having,Lincoln 4-door having welfare types will have a ten year old 50" flatscreen and by now are paying off their long since broken Lincoln or have another vehicle loan that came from them trading a highly upside-down valued loan from the lincoln. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

The problem with that is despite what the Hippies and some Anti War group says, War is not, or(hopefully) never was a "contest" or game. The whole purpose of War is to bring the other country to its knees and obliterate it and/or assimilate it or; most commonly, before that country gets to that near obliteration, gives up and surrenders to the winning country's demands. It's meant to force one's country's will on another for whatever reason(good or bad, history dependent) Sooner or later, the mechanical creations will be spent and real troops will have to come in. No country wants to use its mechanical products to meet an enemy's mechanical products on a predetermined battlefield; the country wants to kill the controllers of the mechanical products so their creations can wreak havok on the other's country. The whole purpose of these creations are to kill people more efficiently. Personally a "fight to the death" scares me. Civilization exists only inside the safe borders of a well-protected country. Believe me, there is a lot of nastiness in the voids that are not surrounded by Soverign borders. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

Nope, I wouldn't either. My tipping policy is tip only a type of service where you consume or utilize the service first then pay. I never tip at a Starbucks or a Santana's(San diego based only probably). I tip at restaurants, bartenders, of course, and also the Nudies. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

something that always bothered me about Karma. . . How do you know that what happened to you is a result of Karma and not a beginning of a "come around go around" cycle of bad behavior of someone else. Is there a Karma accountant? _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
