>one more...(and this one is really bad for this forum) > >paraplegic skydiver? > >--Biff LOL. It really sucks not having a private office, I frequently have to resort to the old "hide behind the monitor" and "disguise laughing as a coughing fit"-techniques...

Hiya Raf! You definitely didn't miss anything, if you're looking to stir up some controversy, the good stuff is in my thread "discussion on offensive jokes" And yes, your helmet will most certainly offend someone.

Actually, sometimes leaving the alt-tag is a serious error. I frequently browse the web with all images switched off, when I'm using my (damn slow) GPRS-connection. Many sites have their navigational links made using images, and if the alt-text is missing, I have to switch the images on and wait until they load before I can continue. Same thing with text-only browsers.

Here's one story: http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/05/20/sky.diving.record/

>Oh, and everyone remember. PMS jokes are not >funny! at that time of the month Any man with any self-preservation instinct will not even think about such a thought crossing his mind. Unless of course there's no immediate threat of physical danger, say, for example, while communicating over the Internet...

>NO BROWSER is completely w3c compliant, But some are getting close... >therefore such validation results are a waste of time I know there was a smiley after the last comment, but I still felt like commenting: "waste of time"? Far from it! It's been a bit of a "chicken or egg"-problem: Browser manufacturers haven't made compliant browsers since no-one made compliant pages, and site designers haven't made compliant code since browsers don't support it... At the moment the makers of the major browsers are taking the standards seriously(even MS!, more or less). Unfortunately, as long as there are human beings writing the code of the browsers, there will be bugs and misfeatures. That's no reason not to try and comply with the standards IMO. Preaching to the choir, more or less, but I had to say it anyway.

The Holocaust. 9/11. Hiroshima. Slavery. Is one of the above more terrible than another, in terms of human beings suffering? If one takes offence from jokes told about one of those things, shouldn't the same person react the same way to jokes told about the other ones? Or is it simply that it doesn't feel bad if it doesn't concern anyone close to you, and therefore you need not to take offence?
-
Nice looking site. And I'm glad to see that it's almost standards compliant too.
-
I agree. But how do you apply that at an Internet-forum?

>Erno? I cant tell if your serious or not?? Ahh, no worries, half the time I'm not so sure about it myself...

>I would think for the joke to be truly non offensive you would >have to say the maturity challenged person fell in the mud. "mud" could be considered a derogatory term by some people though... How about "a mixture of water and dirt"?

Bastards. Keep the bad jokes in the "bad jokes"-thread, this was supposed to be a serious discussion... Mountainman: The "grandma-filter" is a safe way of not offending anyone, but there are a lot of sexually colored jokes that offend no-one, and I still wouldn't tell them to my granny...
-
See, that's just the thing: If a joke offends no-one, it's usually not very funny...

>after all, if they aren't jumping it, why would they care about the opening? Returning clients? Reputation? Honor?

I personally think that if someone is offended by a joke, that someone should grow a thicker skin. Nahh, you've said it, now face the consequences, if there are any. If someone is offended, apologise, if that seems appropriate to you.
-
Good point. Although that's a rather silly attitude to have on an Internet-forum with thousands of users of which you personally know just a small fraction. The point is valid though, and related to another one: Take the jew/oven joke for example. Now, assume that joke is told by -a jewish person -a non-jewish friend of yours -an KKK member. Each case has quite a different ring to it, don't you think?
-
People's reactions to certain jokes that were posted here got me thinking. What do you people consider offensive? Since there is no objective scale of offensiviness, how do you decide if a certain joke is unappropriate, other than by gut feeling? Do you feel it's ok to tell jokes about one minority but not another? Or do you think that no such jokes should be told at all? The way I see it, if you tell a joke, someone will almost always be offended. Why did this joke cause such a strong reaction, whereas this one caused none?
-
That's what I've told students as well when I've taught them about gear and gearing up. The usual reaction is that first they laugh a bit, then they realize that I'm being serious, and the students go all pale and serious. I never wear boxers when jumping, it just doesn't feel safe...

Dude, that looks really scary. There's no way in hell I'd put my rig in that thing!

Yeah, I got the error with Opera6.05. It cleared when I logged in again though. BTW this is my beer post with Opera7.00

I prefer the solid feel of a plastic handle(but the only reason I don't have a hackey is that they didn't have one in my colours at the shop). I've seen a few people with the ends of the plastic handle taped shut.

Hmm. I just logged in(although I already was logged in), and now it works. Just that I don't recall that ever happening to me before. Mystical stuff.
