  1. The news reports I've seen were that Seau did not leave a note of any kind. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  2. Yes, the theory is that he wanted to preserve his brain so it can be examined (for links to trauma). This was done by a different football player last year. I believe that at this point this is speculation in Seau's case. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  3. uh, you did read the article, right? A near majority of that 85M are folks that are in college full time or retired. They are not the invisible unemployed. So cut the number in half and repeat the wow statement if you like. Yes, it does not encompass everybody, but by just including the people who say they are ready for immediate work the unemployment rate rises from ~8.2 to over 11%. That's a pretty big difference. 5. Well, I think we have hashed some of this out in previous threads and we are largely in agreement. I would say the efficacy of treatment is a huge problem for mental illnesses. If the medications were more effective I suspect we would see less people discontinue treatment. Of course that is just one part, as lack of insight also plays a huge part of discontinuation as well. I am in no way in favor of forcing people to get treatment. I believe that is neither effective nor humane. They have the same right ot refuse treatment as somebody with a physical illness. Besides, "enforced treatment, we've been there and it is truly a horror show. I do wish teh stigma was less. I don't know how to address that except one person at a time. 6. I have a hard time judging people who are in that situation. Frankly, I don't see a need to judge them either. I feel sorry for them. It is a shame, specifically with mental illness, that we have such poor treatment options for so many chronic conditions. I hope that changes in the near future but we have such a low level of understanding of the root causes or the proximate causes that I am not holding my breath. One day we will be able to move beyond trial and error. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  7. I believe that if you say a condition is not terminal than most people would be against either self-euthanasia or suicide. That can be a very fine line with a lot of semantics. I'm not even sure there is any difference between self-euthanasia and suicide. Of course mental illness often is fatal. I have a lot of sympathy for those who struggle with mental illness and the torture that it often inflicts on people. I find it very difficult to judge anybody for their actions in response. 8. Also, the OP should know that individual plans do not follow the same rules for coordination of benefits as group plans do. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  9. I think you failed to notice that real Football is the most popular sport on the planet and that besides Americans hardly anyone is interested in American Armoured Rugby. Not seen in the salaries. Depends how you measure it. Average mean) salary for a player in the English Premier League is ~1.8 million dollars (and that is tax free or after tax). That is barely smaller than the average NFL salary of 1.9 million (before tax). There are fewer Premier League players than there are NFL players since there are only 20 teams instead of 32 and average roster sizes are, I think, slightly smaller. However if you look at the total number of leagues available there are far more opportunities in soccer. I don't think the Premier League is the highest paid, either. Looks like the average in Serie A is 5 million Euros, in the Bundesliga 3.3 million Euros, I believe La Liga and Ligue One have lower average salaries but even there you have some extremely high salaries as Real Madrid and Barcelona are the two highest payroll teams in the world. Heck even the Russian Premiere League pays 4.5 million pounds/year and the Chinese Superleague is ~1 million pounds. So, if you add up all of the professional opportunities, it is pretty clear to me that the amount of money in soccer dwarfs that in American football (which lets face is only really consists of the NFL and maybe the CFL). 10. It is impossible to answer this question without knowing the terms and conditions of the individual policies, particularly the coordination of benefits. These differ by state. At best you are getting great coverage and minimizing financial risk. At worst you are paying a lot in premiums for very minimal benefit. There would have to be a lot more information available on both costs and potential benefits before offering any opinion. Of course other factors such as ability to save money (and thus self-insure) and the value of peace of mind weigh into this also. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  11. There are exceptions to HIPPA. State laws on reporting requirements also differ. Generally a state hospital or health care facility would not report something like that unless required to do so. Health Care professionals do not like being an agent of the penal system. 12. You must hold an A license to do an intentional water landing, so there is nowhere that will allow you to do that as a student. Solo landings could be harder or could be easier than your tandem landing. It is possible you will break your ankle if you jump. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  13. People have been predicting a Malthusian population crisis for centuries (since well before Malthus). "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  14. Bah, of course in geological time all of these measurements are not really telling us anything. Maybe the 100k years starts to tell us something. That especially applies when we try to look at historical data--we have no idea what an average fluctuation is over a 10 year or 100 year period. Everything we are looking at could be noise. 15. Actually, John, if you read the article that was one of the points made by the defense in their motion, that under the interpretation employed that Sullenger would have been guilty of harassing both the geese and the fish... "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  16. Well, I was comparing it to marriage, but I know not everybody's experience of that is the same as mine was.... "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  17. So did slavery. Finally, an apt comparison "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  18. well what are they going to do take away the FAA license required to pilot a tandem paraglider? Oh wait a second... The FAA can fine people, such as skydivers and tandem paraglider pilors, who break the FARs, even though they have no certificate or license. It is rare but possible. They can also prohibit him from piloting as well. Again not very likely but possible. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  19. Really ought to be paying them to harass Canadian geese, too. Especially the resident ones. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  20. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/2-iowa-pilots-charged-with-harassing-migrating-birds-by-flying-small-planes-low-over-lake/2012/04/30/gIQAxqv8rT_story.html Seems to me they will be convicted of busting a FAR (flying below 500ft) but not so clear that they were harassing birds (hard to tell for sure). Just an interesting story to me, though. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  21. Doesn't make it right "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  22. Yes, it is a violation of the FARs if he did not have a reserve. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  23. Simple social justice. Consider the practical difference between "breaking up with your SO" and "getting a divorce". Believe me, the marrieds pay the price. Why should that be, though? I dunno. In some older societies, you could get a divorce just by taking your spouse into the public square and saying "I divorce you" before witnesses. I just don't see why personal relationships between consenting adults should be regulated by the state. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  24. Honestly if holocaust denial is a form of social suicide then this argues loudly that the marketplace of ideas is effective and that no law should be necessary. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
