closing pin necklace - do you wear one!?
Southern_Man replied to virgin-burner's topic in The Bonfire
Nope. I've never liked wearing jewelry of any kind, usually don't even wear a watch, so I have no interest in a closing pin necklace. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
I went with primary dominant colors on my jumpsuit because I am on used gear and anticipate possibly switching canopies and containers several times (probably all used due to budget considerations) so I figured with some common, primary colors (Blue, red, black in my case) I have a pretty good chance of matching some part of anything I buy. I also stayed away from white just because it gets dirty easier. Yes, the most practical considerations about fall rate were more important. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Also known as risk homeostasis and the converse is also true. When things get safer people are willing to take more risks. Also known in skydiving as Booth's law: "The safer skydiving gear becomes, the more chances skydivers will take, in order to keep the fatality rate constant." Could you explain? Sparky Not in this format, but here is a video on it: http://www.pcworld.com/article/164927/how_to_easily_install_ubuntu_linux_on_any_pc.html I'm by no means a computer expert but I have ubuntu linux running on an old desktop. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

summary article: http://www.cic-wildlife.org/index.php?id=324 Scientific study documenting effects of lead ingestion in upland bird species: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/etc.5620150103/abstract I've switched from using lead sinkers to using other materials when I fish. Not because I have to but because it is good for the environment and I want to preserve that environment for future hunters and fishermen. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
You can also install linux. It is not that complicated and a lot less bloated than windows. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Minnesota citizens about to get screwed-New stadium

this is on the state level and is something the state will use and make money on, this is not socialism. I guess it is only socialism when poor people get the handout. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
The group that suffered the losses is part of the bank's so-called corporate unit, and had been making trades designed to hedge against risk. Seems like that strategy didn't work out so well. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Honestly I believe the DMV here only checks to see if you are eligible to have a driver's license. I do not think they verify or record your citizenship status but I am not 100% sure. Anyway, in my state there is absolutely no tie between the DMV and voting. I do not believe the registrar cross checks any DMV records. As far as I can tell there is no verification process for citizenship for registration. They do ask you to affirm that you are a citizen on the application and you do have to send in some confirmation of identity but this can be a utility bill (so, not government issues, no picture, etc.). Here is the VA application for voter registration: http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/documents/VoterRegistration/sbe_voter_app_DOJ-Printed.pdf "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

This is corporate welfare, plain and simple. (so are all those government loans to business). If this was such a great investment for future revenues then there would be no problem getting the team owners or other investors to put up all the money required. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
It depends on the state. My state verifies that you are a legal resident (through requiring proper documentation) but does not indicate anywhere on your licesne whether you are a citizen or not. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

You should look at the 55+ demographics! And they no longer worry about pregnancy. In Ben Franklin's famous words about older women, "They don't tell, they don't swell and they are grateful as hell." "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

You think THAT'S the biggest issue? The male:female ratio is a zero sum game. (Assume gay males cancel out gay females.) If one guy has two females, it means there's some guy out there without any. Eventually you have a LOT of sexually frustrated males who are going to spend that energy doing wildly unproductive things. I don't know about being a problem if we permit polygamy but this is a huge problem in societies that practice sex selective abortions such as China and India. The sex ratio in China is all out of whack. Unfortunately one way for the state to relieve pressure caused by a large contingent of sexually frustrated males is to send them to war. should skydiving become an olympic sport?
Southern_Man replied to costanza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If I wanted to be argumentative I'd note that polo and yachting are Olympic sports. Ski-jumping isn't exactly a poor man's sport, or widely practiced in, shall we say, the more Equatorial nations. But it does have that "coolness" factor, doesn't it? And that's what skydiving has, too. That being said, I agree with the other poster's comment that skydiving is a better fit as an X-Games sport. The Olympics has Rythmic Gymnastics. Ew! Do we really want to be part of a club that lets that in through the front door, but kicks out windsurfing? Water polog is an olympic sport. Polo is not, although it has been in the past (last in 1936 I believe). Yachting is, as you note, a very expensive sport of the privlidged, as are some others--Equistrian is not cheap. However yachting is a very established sport as part of the Olympic program. I believe new sports do have some challenge to prove that they are 1. widely (though not universally) practiced throughout the world and 2. prove that the ccost of training and participation is not prohibitive. The full criteria for evaluation are here: http://www.olympic.org/Documents/Reports/EN/en_report_813.pdf I think the winter Olympics are totally different in terms of their criteria. They are not maxed out on space and facilities cost and the events they host have some inherent geographical distribution, due to them having to be contested on ice and snow. Don't get me wrong, I would love for skydiving to be part of the Olympics, and let's face it, we are all cool. I just don't see skydiving surviving evaluation by those criteria. (How many skydivers are willing to put up with piss tests and submit to the 24 hour whereabouts requirements of the WADA code?) "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Several issues raised in your post: You will need two jumpsuits. One for belly flying and one for freeflying. Don't try to get one to do both, esp. since you said you had some cash saved up. Make sure you get measured appropriately. There are very specific instructions on each suit maker's website. They need to be followed. If at all possible I would get somebody who was used to measuring for jumpsuits. Fit matters. Drag--call the manufacturers and talk to them about your height, weight, and concerns about fall rate. They are experts at it and can talk you through the options. You are not light, but you are quite tall, so I bet you don't need to be slowed down as much as you think. Again, they can help you make appropriate decisions. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

should skydiving become an olympic sport?
Southern_Man replied to costanza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Everybody wants to get their activity into the Olympics. Even Chess wants recognition as an Olympic Sport (to the point that they have adopted WADA code against performance enhancing drugs). The problem is that the IOC does not want to expand the number of competitors because it is already logistically difficult for a city to host the games without massive debt. So, you can't really get in unless 1. You are at the top of the list of most desireable sports and 2. Somebody else gets kicked out. One strike against skydiving is that it is seen as a sport for the wealthy and privledged, not available or accesible in many poorer nations. Personally I think it would be cool to have skydiving in the Olympics but I see no realistic chance of that happening. Maybe a demonstration spot once in a while. Does anybody know anything happening? In all of the release info from 2011 it appeared Alti-2 was going to be handling USA sales and importing, if I remember correctly. They have no reference and the Mars MS site states that it is going to be imported by M2 Distribution INC. I find corporate listings for that name in Boone, NC and Deland but can't find a corporate web page or any contact information. Also, it is stated upthread that several manufacturers have approved installation but I can't find it on the Sunrise (Wings) site but haven't scoured all of them. Can somebody point me to any sort of approval? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
