Hi Mike, Thank you for your service on the board. Please do not take this as adversarial but my question is why you think we had to raise minimum opening altitudes to raise AAD deployment altitudes? I see fear of two-outs comes into play. I have seen at least 3 different two outs which came from AAD fires. On all three of them the planned deployment altitude was above 3000 ft. Is there a rash of 2 outs from jumpers deploying below 2500? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Please do not think I am trying to be negative towards you. I am only trying put forth some information. The FAA does not "TSO the rigs.' The mfr does; heck, the FAA does not even come out to watch any of the testing. hi Jerry, You can always disagree with me without worrying that I will take it the wrong way. I am new in rigging and relatively new in the sport and have a lot of respect for experienced folks. You have given me some food for thought, especially in your analogies to airbags and (someone else) medical devices. I am not convinced that the AAD firing, reserve not deploying is down to rig design, or at least not solely to rig design. I know a lot of very experienced people are convinced that is the sole issue. I do not know enough about how extensively the manufacturers re-test minor design changes. I believe that retesting is not as thorough as the TSO process but maybe it should be. If rig design is playing a role than it may be that there was not enough real world testing done (such as putting enough different size reserves in it, testing every container size, etc). Anyway, I am in favor of raising AAD firing altitudes. I think the 750 is cutting the margin too thin. I don't know if it will eliminate this sort of incident and suspect that if rig design is really the culprit they will continue. I do not see why the minimum pull altitude had to be raised to do that. I am unaware that any of the "going in w/ reserve still in the freebag" incidents happened on a jump with a planned deployment altitude below 2500 ft. Interested to hear further thoughts. I was asking about a semi-stowless from Wings about 6 weeks or so ago (said they didn't have one because they hadn't been able to get it right in testing). Noticed while I was poking around on their website that they are now offering one. Looks like it has four stows prior to figure 8ing the lines. Has anybody used one? How does it compare to other semi-stowless bags? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

It is not just the AAD manufacturers. PD has a the OPT reserve which takes longer to open which PD self admitted in their first ads. Wings has issues with reserve pilot chutes not getting the freebag out... several videos out there of this. The list goes on.... PIA needs to address these issues, but hey, it's "the fox guarding the hen house" scenario. MEL Honestly MEL, I see it as more of an FAA issue than PIA. They are the ones who TSO the rigs. Are there really tons of hop and pop incidents of students exiting low? I don't recall a large amount of posts in the incidents section on this. Seems like a non-issue to me. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Yes, I work as a packer. Usually when a jumper is complaining that the loop is too tight I can pull 2" of closing loop through the last grommet (by using good technique, not by just horsing it closed). "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Students jumping at different DZ's (Semi long post)

Moving around different DZs during training is generally a bad idea for several reasons. You are running into one of those reasons. Each place probably does training slightly differently and will want to check out your skills and make sure you are up to snuff before letting you jump there. This is their right and a good safety practice but it adds expense to the jumps. There is not really a way around this. This is a little easier if you are working with two DZs where the people all know each other (on good terms) and may be more likely to take an instructors word on skill level. It also gets easier when you are cleared for self-supervision in Freefall (and I don't know where that is in your progression but likely not yet if you are still having trouble in turns). Anyway, it seems a little harsh to criticize the DZ for wanting to make sure you are safe. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
I guess what they're trying to achieve is if people take too long on procedures, the aad can fire higher, which MAY allow it open the reserve before they bounce. But the only way to get the aad set higher is if the manufacturers are assured that people are deploying their mains high enuf that they will have no more liability after changing the activiation altitude. I still disagree with making EVERYONE comply with a rule that only some might benefit from. Seems like all (at least most) the issues with the rigs not opening in time is with the main still in the container. It is the deployment procedures, not fighting a malfunctioning main down low, that is to blame for those. Changing the firing altitude will not help with people who fight their malfunctioning main down low. They still have to reach firing speed after cutaway before the AAD will fire. The risk of having the AAD set higher is more two outs. Two outs are a pretty big crap shoot too. Frankly I know of quite a few two outs. None were from planned altitude deployments below 2500, they were all from losing altitude awareness--all planned to deploy by 3000. I don't think raising the deployment altitude will change that. Maybe a few hundred jumps, maybe a thousand, maybe never. Every jumper is different. You might not ever have the skills to safely fly a 1.4 wingloading, or you could have those skills within a few hundred jumps. You might decide you are happy with something in the 150-170 range for the rest of your skydiving career. There is no rule that says you have to downsize. Thanks! I was under the impression this was the norm. I'll worry about my first rig and safely flying it for now. Thanks again. It is not the norm, although some people do downsize more aggressively. I flew 210s loaded at 1:1 (maybe slightly above when I gained some weight) until I had 300 jumps and just downsized to a 190. Just worry about getting something that fits the right size canopies and that you can jump safely now. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

The indoor skydiving facility is part of a larger mixed use development located at the municipal parking lot at 25th street and Pacific Avenue. The development also includes an upscale apartment complex and a 600 space parking garage that nearly doubles the current public parking capacity. The development team continues to work closely with resort area planning officials and business and residential communities to help shape the final plan.
