  1. Perhaps it is a good idea to modify unairworthy canopies to be sold on e-bay for decoration purposes in a way that they cannot be immediately attached to the rig *** cutting the line attachment points off the canopy came to mind when my stiletto was deemed unairworthy by PD and I found a person looking for a wall hanging, so a few snips here and there made sure it would stay on the wall. 2. what is it that makes you want to keep going back up? *** I can forget all my troubles for a while, bills/family/work, all that fades for a few precious moments..... there is always another newbie to share their excitement with. Big way RW - the excitement of completing one is electrifying. Freeflying, just horsing around with friends, or getting serious and turning points. CRW, a skydive with high energy that lasts for minutes. and last..... cause I havent gotten as good at everything as I think I can. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.

    Ureka!!

YEah. It might snivel. Quote I HEAR THAT!!! Next time it's due for a reline, think about having the XFX mod done by Precision. *** I had it relined by precision about 150 jumps ago, George totally ROCKS!!! but went the cheap way and only had the lines replaced.... He tried to convince me to do the XFX mod, but I couldnt come up with the additional $$$$....... not that its that much more, but I am just a poor white boy.... 6. Just remember the most important thing..... If she has a friend - I am single..... See ya saturday...... have her come out for safety day and buy her a observer ride, or better yet, take her on a tandem..........take care of my slot and I will do the video, and after she has been around your circle of low class friends, you will look like a total winner!!!! .......hmmmm, or is that wiener?..... 7. Is this good practice or am I developing bad muscle memory? ---- *** If you have the correct procedures firmly in mind, then its a good mental exercise, but if you have them fixed in your mind incorrectly then you are just cementing them there firmly. I was waiting for my load several years ago, there was a student practicing his EP's by himself, and something didnt look correct...... so I walked over and watched closer, he was pulling his reserve and then pulling his cutaway!!!!...... I took him to his instructor and had him perform for him... he had been practicing at home by himself.... he didnt make the next load, but after getting sorted out he made two that day. Ureka!!

My FX has always been a firm opening canopy, and I tried every packing technique to slow it down...... with some success.. but not enough... two weeks ago I had my rigger make me a new slider, one inch wider, one and a half inches larger front to back and the openings are butter soft..... almost scary soft... it now opens way softer than my stiletto used to, it is taking from 600'-800' to open. My question is.... Is there any drawbacks to retrofitting a canopy with a larger slider than it was intended to have? Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.

    Would you ....

or have you..... ever taught a student to in a panic situation (low altitude) just flare or go to very deep brakes? *ie> just before stalling .... whether its a stationary obsticle or another jumper. (I have always stressed that avoiding a situation requiring a low emergency turn is better than doing one, that being aware is best....and if you need to turn to do a flare turn, but I am now thinking that teaching a "when in doubt... Just flare" might just be an acceptable technique.... broken legs heal, death is pretty permanent... How much do you stress to your students that the wing has to be level when landing..... Panic turns seem to be taking too many jumpers ... irregardless of wingloading.... The fatalities that occur from a inadvertent hook turns make me very sad. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... 12. Of course Oregon would try it.... this state is extremely desperate for money, they have a rediculous amount of waste, and they waste the money on stupid shit, like reallocating funds to dog parks and walking trails...... sounds great untill your road falls apart and you have to dodge big potholes because they cannot afford to pay to fill them Thank GOD I am leaving this state in less than two weeks!!! *nice place to visit, ya dont want to live here...... 14. What's the reason for that advice? *** Think wind drift indicator with GPS and winds aloft forecasting its not as big an issue as it used to be, but ya never know
  15. they were a decent canopy at the time they were introduced, not a bad canopy by any means, I found the openings to be slow, on heading, toggle pressure was not bad, it didnt like front risering at all, and I found the flare to be weak.... mind you this canopy had about 600 jumps on it on the same line set so the weak flare was probably due to being out of trim. If the price is right, buy it. but my opinion is the spectre is a superior canopy, so you may be a bit disappointed if you try to compare them performance wise. edit to add* I was right around a 1-1 wing loading on it at the time Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... 16. Well, I'm very happy for you and I'm sure you'll like being closer to your son.*** Thanks Dave!!! I think it is very cool ..... the drive every two weeks to pick up my son has been killing me and I have put over 30k miles on my Mitsubishi, and I havent even owned it a full year yet..... 17. I got a call from a previous employer in my home town today, (on the message machine) and they want me back, I have been employed in Portland Oregon for two years now and have for the last year wanted to go home, I have found out I am not a big city boy after all..... It will put me within 80 miles of my son rather than 250 and I will be making only slightly less money than I am now (with no state income tax it should work out to about the same) I will be able to resume working for my home DZ again. everything is looking very cool right now.... so why am I nervous....?? 20. Cat haters suck sweating donkey balls. They lack the confidence to own a cat. Takes a confident person to own a cat, they can be some of the most cantankerous creatures in the world. They can also be one of the most loving and affectionate.*** Cat haters fucking suck! Take your cat hating somewhere else. I don't fucking think it's right. Bash a fucking stupid ass dog!! I hate dogs.. those drooling, barking, stupid ass scavangers. Dogs are good for one thing... shitting on your lawn... I swerve to hit them while driving because the fuktards are to stupid to stay away from the road. *** WOW, nice tirade!..... got a little bit of pent up hostility??

  22. Updated: 08:03 AM EST Prenatal Screening for Parasite Urged By CARLA K. JOHNSON, AP CHICAGO (Feb. 9) - A group of doctors is urging routine screenings for infections that can cause blindness and brain damage in babies and can be caused when pregnant women clean a cat litter box, gardens or eat raw eggs or meat. Few pregnant women or infants are routinely tested for toxoplasmosis, caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can infect all animals and can be found in the ground. Cats spread the parasite in their feces. Janet Morel doesn't know whether it was the undercooked eggs she ate while she was pregnant or parasites from the pet cat that caused her daughter Dana's blindness and brain damage. Morel and her husband face a lifetime of caring for Dana, who is now 17. Doctors blame Dana's problems on toxoplasmosis, which is why Morel supports a call for routine testing of pregnant women and infants for the parasitic infection. "If you could see my daughter, you would understand why it is I feel so strongly about this," said Morel, of Scottsdale, Ariz. It is not clear how big a risk toxoplasmosis is. Some studies suggest about 1 out of 1,000 babies is born with it; but in Massachusetts, which has routinely tested newborns for it for almost 20 years, only about 1 in 15,000 has turned up with toxoplasmosis. New Hampshire is the only other state that tests all babies for the infection. "What it takes is a little push to get this going," said Dr. Kenneth Boyer, pediatrics chairman at Rush University Medical Center, who led a study on the infection's risk factors with Dr. Rima McLeod of University of Chicago's Toxoplasmosis Center. "I believe our paper ought to be a push in that direction." The research, published in the February issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that even if doctors ask all the right questions to find known risk factors, they miss about half the women who give birth to babies with toxoplasmosis. Some infected babies are born with no obvious symptoms and damage becomes apparent later. Others, like Dana Morel, have severe symptoms at birth. Daily treatment during an infected baby's first year of life can prevent some serious symptoms, Boyer said, but even that is not 100 percent effective. Another problem with universal screening is that the test isn't always accurate and can worry parents needlessly by turning up positive when there is no infection. Universal testing also adds to health care costs, said Roger B. Eaton, director of the New England Newborn Screening Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. But Eaton considers the testing cost-effective. In Massachusetts, it's one of several newborn screening tests that together cost $55. The study looked at 131 babies with toxoplasmosis who were referred to the Chicago Collaborative Treatment Trial, a project funded by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers interviewed the children's mothers, asking whether they owned cats, cleaned litter boxes, gardened or ate uncooked meat while pregnant. The researchers also asked the women if they had flu-like symptoms or swollen lymph nodes during pregnancy. Half the women recalled no symptoms or risk factors, the researchers found. Boyer said that shows that normal prenatal care, which involves such interview questions but no blood test, potentially misses about half the cases of toxoplasmosis during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology does not recommend routine prenatal testing for toxoplasmosis. Standard advice for pregnant women includes a warning not to clean cat litter boxes. Pregnant women also should wear gloves while gardening and avoid eating raw or undercooked food. Shellfish and untreated water are new suspected culprits, according to the study.
