lol you just got taken by a sales man, even after being warned here.... so when that DVD player dies (and it will its crap comparatively) are you going to go without while your ENTIRE TV is off for repair?? at least its from Best Buy.. youve got time to correct your mistake... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

"You can never step in the same river twice" Zen saying often paraphrased as 'you can never go home'.. everything changes every day even as it appears the same, the river is not the same as it was nor is the person stepping into it. was bored and trying to find a forum (not this one obviously) user name... 3 years ago if you googled Zenister 90% of the references you got back would have been related to me.... try it now and less than 4% of results (bored enough to do the math..even counting DZ.com) are mine... no real point i suppose except to say that google isnt a very good way to find yourself, nor is it a means for those searching to find me..... for those that care, look elsewhere. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

ah yes the BV nonsequitors i've missed so much.. so what part of "is worthy of" did you miss.. IS: driving over a bridge (an action) worthy of death? no. taunting a predator (an action) worthy of death? yes. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

cant argue with that logic. you win the thread ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

yet amazingly how many millions of visitors managed to see this tiger without getting mauled? not provoking a predator was once an instinct that everyone shared... apparently its been bred out of some humans and in this case it came back to haunt one. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

I'm not bob (you can have the mods check my IP if you doubt) but yes, I'd be angry at them for doing something so completely and colossally foolish as to toy with a wild animal, much less one of the largest predators on the planet. The blame still falls squarely on the individual, and the outcome is inline with the level of stupidity illustrated.. its not like he was teasing a feral cat.. this was a 350lb Tiger... the often used quote applies.. "you mess with the bull sometimes you get the horns", the key difference is BULLS ARE NOT NATURAL KILLERS. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

if you know anything about the territorial instincts of tigers you'd be well aware that at 50 feet you would be long past the line you should be worrying, however in confined enclosures zoos take often excessive measures to try to inhibit those instincts to a much smaller locale. If you know what you are doing you can be VERY close to even a completely wild tiger and not trigger it, but there is ALWAYS a risk with ANY wild animal, one the professionals understand and accept. This idiot trusted the illusion of safety provided the Zoo and then did something even more stupid in provoking it. Go find a single professional trainer who believes 'teasing' any wild animal is a good idea or a way to remain health when inside its territorial boundaries. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

i'd like to hope that too.. but the pessimist in me sees the declining attention span of youth (not that i can point fingers, but i DID learn how to play several instruments) coupled with the time it takes to get to a reasonable level of skill to be able to play together in the same time/same key as well as the cost of separate instruments when compared to pretending to be rock god overnight and says the tend will go the other way.... for example I saw a kid who was absolutely owning the GHIII game when they had it on the big screen in the mall.. Me: "wow your pretty good at that, how long have you been playing?" Him: "oh a few years really i had the first one when it came out." M: "thats cool do you play real guitar"? him: "no that is to much work" ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

You and I are not speaking the same language if you think the concept of responsibility applies to any non cognizant (ie non human until we meet another) "animal" Well, you're talking about the animal as if it understands the concept of "teasing" and "taunting." I still don't get where some of y'all think a tiger preferentially attacks the person who is "teasing" it over those who are gawking respectfully. i'm guessing you have no experience with wild animals.. they can be provoked, different species have different triggers. Zoo's do a great deal to subvert the basic instincts, but they are still wild animals. for example I will not be surprised at all when one day an orca (who perhaps missed a planned meal to keep it tame and docile) decides to take the kid leaning over the platform to pet it as a snack.. its the exact same behavior it would do with a seal if it werent fed regularly as a pacifier. there is no shame in being unsurprised when a wild animal acts according to its basic instinct, nor in lacking sympathy for those who fail to understand how fragile the illusion of control humans have over them really is... only the distance modern man lives from basic nature makes this a surprise to anyone at all. Perhaps this instance will help more remove their blinders about mankind's 'control' ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

You and I are not speaking the same language if you think the concept of responsibility applies to any non cognizant (ie non human until we meet another) "animal" there is no such thing as a 'controlled environment' with any wild animal, the only thing Zoos have done in this regard is promote a myth. That myth and this mans actions got him killed. Agreed. One of the defining elements of tragedy is that it is brought on directly by the actions of the protagonist. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

No. Just the idiots who taunt and tease the animals. So do you believe that Klebold and Harris were justified in their actions at Columbine? After all, they were relentlessly teased and taunted too. In any event, IMO the kid didn't deserve to die for it, any more than the zoo keeper who was torn up by this same cat last December "deserved what she got" when feeding the animal through the feeding bars. Humans and Animals dont have remotely the same level of responsibility, your example is inane. The majority of people who work with large cats accept the inherent risks involved. You wont find them 'taunting' them either. the adage applies... fuck with a tiger expect to get bitten, mankind has done alot to take the repercussions of being foolish out of the equation, but occasionally a better fool appears... want to be there will be ALOT less taunting by those who have the privilege to see the last of the great predators AT ALL... "if nothing else he serves as an example to others" lets clarify something here: 'deserve' means 'to be worthy of'. Taunting one of the largest land predators in existence 'for kicks' because 'you think' you are safe is both arrogant and foolish. SUre 99.9% of the time you might get away with it (due to no effort of your own, just the simple faith of 'safety') but yes the 1 time it actually bites you (pun intended) your action in that instance were 'worthy' of the outcome you invited. the only sad thing i see here at all is that an innocent animal had to be killed because of an ignorant asshat. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

one of the principles my fencing maestro used to quote all the time was "Russian gymnasts must perform any routine correctly one thousand times before it is considered competition ready." Per his ongoing lectures (given at the point of exhaustion always) this was to ingrain the action to the level the athlete wouldn't revert to 'less refined, more practiced' moves when faced with the pressure of competition. Given that someones life very literally will depend on the instructors ability to perform both in the class room and in the air, one would hope a similar level of training (and testing) is required prior to letting someone teach another.. well one can hope at least.... to bad the dollar is more often the driving force and measure of 'success'..... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

this is nearly always the owners fault..... but go ahead and blame the dog if it makes you feel better about your possessions. Skymama is more politic than i.. i nearly always give more credit to the animal for behaving in exactly the way it is(or is not) raised.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

ages ago i was fortunate enough to see a litter of recently born Bengals at the zoo a good friend was working at.. we were actually allowed into the 'den' area (still quite separated from mama and cubs) we were only inside the scarcely lit room for maybe 4 min tops and 'mama' apparently didnt like one of us.. she let out a long low growl in the sub base range that sent the monkey inside my head scampering for the trees as i suddenly started to sweat. It was obvious it affected all of us (including the girl that worked there) immediately... It is the only time i can recall actually seeing the hair on the back of anyone's neck stand up, and its the only time i've ever been terrified by a sound... "well visit time is over" and we quickly exited after being quietly warned "dont run" ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

A friend of mine and his brother came over Saturday - they weren't looking to be impressed, and kinda felt the same way I did about the whole "guitar hero" crazy (think South Park) They went out Sunday morning and bought themselves one The game is def more fun with more people. I think it's even a little easier if there's other people there to carry you a little. http://xkcd.com/359/ will see what this does to the number of people who learn to play real instruments... (everytime i offer to buy a friends kids drums/saxophone/bagpipes for xmas i get the cold shoulder for a month) although i do have to say watching a couple of friends 'duel' on web cam was more fun than playing the game (GHIII) itself could ever be for me... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Really? I always thought that 'the message', tenses, spelling and grammer should be different metrics in writing. If your message is great, but spelling, punctuation and tenses are atrocious, does that really mean the big picture is wrong? Just get some 'fix-its' applied to the solution and the overall product is better. Good editors are extremely hard to come by. . the largest problem in any 'writing class' isnt the 'parsing', its teaching the thought process. Unfortunately you cannot realistically do that in a separated series of doctrinally mandated classes. It has to be part of a continued holistic learning approach. What ends up being graded is often the 'parsing' and how well whoever was evaluating you 'got' and 'liked' the manner you expressed your point. ofc if their thought process was developed by the same flawed system, most of the feedback you get is relatively worthless in developing your own thoughts and expressing them through the written language. those who get hung up on the parsing miss the forest for the trees...but learning the basic rule structure is fundamental to understanding when breaking it is innovative vs regressive. This applies to pretty much every 'Art', and is one of the reasons why so many (mistakenly) argue that there is no such thing as 'better or worse' when it comes to an Art form. One may absolutely love their children's finger paintings or the heartfelt bleating of the street corner guitarist, but that doesnt make them Picasso or Segovia ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
